This study identified the presence of alpha-CD near the PEG moiety in BCP, leading to the formation of stereocomplex with the PLA moiety even after PPRXs were formed. It also provides insights into the method of forming PLA SC with PPRX, and the preparation of PLA-PPRXs using PLA-BCP and alpha-CD components.
Three types of polylactide (PLA)-poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) block copolymers (BCPs) were synthesized as ABA, AB, and BA types. We focused on different BCP structures, which might influence the rotaxane structure, to determine which part in BCP, PLA, or PEG, contributes to the penetration and stabilization of alpha-cyclodextrin (alpha-CD) as a ring moiety. Anionic ring-opening polymerization was used for the formation of the same length of PEG and PLA in the BCPs. The PLA-PEG pseudo-polyrotaxanes (PLA-PEG PPRXs) were then prepared using these PLA-PEG BCPs with alpha-CD. Herein, we detected that the alpha-CD existed near the PEG moiety in BCP, and this resulted in stereocomplex formation with the PLA moiety even after PPRXs were formed. This study also provides new information on the method of forming the PLA SC with PPRX, as well as the preparation of PLA-PPRXs using PLA-BCP and alpha-CD components.
