The study examined the impact of various sterilization methods on the filtration efficiency and breathing resistance of different types of facemasks, with certified N95 masks showing the highest efficiency. Ionizing radiation significantly reduced the filtration efficacy of masks. Hot water washing was recommended as an affordable sterilization method, and cloth and surgical masks were found to have comparable performance.
Due to the ongoing pandemic, various types of facemasks such as certified N-95, non-woven fiber and fabric/textile masks are being used as an essential protective measure to reduce the risk of spread of the SARS-Cov-2 virus. The aerosols size-dependent filtration efficiency and breathing resistance of these masks were tested before and after sterilization by five different methods for two flow rates (20 and 90 L/min) conditions corresponding to regular breathing rate and moderate/strenuous exertion, in the particle size range 0.3-10 mu m. Sterilization techniques used here are autoclaving (30 and 60 minutes), dry air oven heating (30 and 60 minutes), ionizing irradiation (15 and 25 kGy), hot water washing with and without detergent and immersing in a 10% concentration of liquid hydrogen peroxide for 30 minutes. Further, the filtration efficiency of each type of masks is also studied with laboratory generated two-order higher aerosol concertation. The certified mask has the most outstanding filtering efficiency among all the other type of facemasks. The ionizing radiation causes a significant reduction in filtration efficacy, so that it is not recommended for sterilization purpose. The best method to sterilize certified N-95 masks without affecting their performance is by using dry air heating with temperature ranging from 70-80 degrees C. The performance of the cloth and surgical masks is found to be comparable for both flow conditions. As an affordable sterilization method, hot water washing is recommended, which does not deteriorate the fabric masks efficiency and can be used by the common people. The recommended masks for the general people are textile/fabric masks which serves fit for the purpose than non-woven masks because it can help to reduce non-biodegradable waste (facemask) and prevent respiratory droplet transmission. The non-woven mask can be sterilized with dry heat, hot water wash and autoclave.

Summary: In the event of a core disruptive accident in sodium cooled fast reactors, understanding the behavior of sodium and fission product aerosols is crucial for nuclear reactor safety analysis. In this study, the evolution of sodium aerosol characteristics is simulated using the HAARM-S code, which is based on the method of moments. The code is updated to FORTRAN-77 and compared with measured values at an Aerosol Test Facility. The results show a maximum deviation of 30% between measured and simulated mass concentrations in the initial period, and around 50% in the later period. The influence of humidity on aerosol size growth is also studied.

Charging and dynamics of polystyrene latex aerosols under bipolar and unipolar ion field-ELPI measurements and comparison with charging theories

Summary: The nuclear reactor research community is interested in the dynamics of charged aerosols in a confined environment. In this study, various charging theories for bipolar and unipolar ion field exposures were reviewed using experimental measurements with PSL aerosols and ELPI. The results show that the ratio of bipolar ions (n+/n-) marginally increases as more negative ions get attached to aerosols. The charge level obtained from generation reduces under a bipolar ion field but increases enormously under a unipolar ion field.

Summary: This study evaluated the performance and effectiveness of N95 respirators under different sterilization methods, and found that dry air heat and H2O2 soaking are the most suitable sterilization methods. Dry air heat and H2O2 sterilization did not significantly degrade the physical, chemical, and morphological properties of the respirator layers.

Summary: Porous reduced graphene oxide (prGO) and NiCo2S4 composite were prepared hydrothermally and used as electrode materials for supercapacitors (EC) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The study showed that symmetric supercapacitors exhibited a much higher specific capacitance (SC), reaching up to fifty times the original value. The composite also displayed good HER activity with a low Tafel slope value of -57 mV dec(-1).

Summary: The development of two-dimensional composite materials is crucial for meeting the high energy demand. In this study, nitrogen-doped porous reduced graphene oxide (N-prGO) and NiCo2S4-acetylene black (NiCo2S4-AB) were synthesized by hydrothermal method for supercapacitor and hydrogen evolution reaction applications. The synthesized N-prGO/NiCo2S4-AB composite showed superior performance in terms of specific capacitance, power density, and hydrogen production, highlighting its potential in energy conversion/storage applications.

Summary: In the event of a Core Disruptive Accident in a sodium-cooled fast reactor, sodium will be released and result in a sodium fire in the Reactor Containment Building (RCB). The dispersion and suspension of sodium aerosols inside the containment are crucial factors in determining the Environment Source Term (EST). Therefore, it is important to conduct safety analysis of the reactor using computational tools and validate the models with experimental data on aerosol dynamics and thermal hydraulics within the containment.
