This study explores the impact of cereal crop production, forestry production, and economic progress on CO2 emissions in China. Positive shocks to cereal crop production intensify carbon dioxide emissions in the long run, while forestry shocks have no significant impact. Positive and negative economic shocks respectively boost and reduce carbon dioxide emissions in the long term.
The accumulation of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has surged over the years as a consequence of diverse humans activities such as deforestation and farming, in particular. The rapidly growing agriculture and farm mechanization have contributed to substantial increases in energy use and carbon dioxide emissions across the globe. It is hypothesized that agriculture significantly contributes to a country's economy to which China is no exception. Hence, the main intention of the current study was to explore the asymmetrical influences of cereal crop production, forestry production, and economic progress on CO2 emissions in China between 1970 and 2017. The non-linear ARDL (Autoregressive Distributed Lag) bounds testing method was used to determine the shortand long-run dynamics linked with positive and negative shocks to the explanatory variables. The findings indicate that positive shocks to cereal crop production deteriorate the atmospheric quality by intensifying carbon dioxide emissions only in the long run, while the impacts of negative shocks in this regard are statistically insignificant. Ironically, shocks to forestry do not exhibit any significant impact on China's carbon dioxide emission levels. Moreover, carbon dioxide emissions demonstrate a strong progressive association with the positive shocks to energy resources utilized within the Chinese economy. Additionally, positive and negative shocks to economic progress are evidenced to boost and reduce the carbon dioxide emission figures in the long run. Lastly, negative shocks to livestock production are witnessed to increase carbon dioxide emissions only in the short run. Hence, for achieving the Chinese carbon-neutrality agenda, it is recommended to prioritize the use of renewable energy resources, particularly for producing cereal crops, in order to curb carbon dioxide emissions in China. Simultaneously, the Chinese economic growth policies should integrate environmentally-friendly schemes to counter the adversative environmental influences related to the economic progress in China.

Can energy productivity gains harness the carbon dioxide-inhibiting agenda of the Next 11 countries? Implications for achieving sustainable development

Muntasir Murshed, Uzma Khan, Aarif Mohammad Khan, Ilhan Ozturk

Summary: This study investigates the impact of energy productivity gains on carbon dioxide emissions in the Next 11 countries amidst their deteriorating environmental conditions. The findings show that energy productivity improvement and financial inclusion jointly reduce CO2 emissions, but a more inclusive financial system tends to amplify emissions. Furthermore, economic growth, international trade, and urbanization increase CO2 emissions, while greater renewable energy use curbs emissions. Heterogeneous outcomes are observed among these countries, with energy productivity improvement curbing emissions in eight nations and both energy productivity and financial inclusion mitigating and boosting emissions in 55% and 18% of the Next 11 countries, respectively.

Economic Growth Drivers in Romania: Evidence from a NARDL Analysis

Milin Ioana Anda, Busan Gabriela, Ecobici Nicolae, Abdul Rehman

Summary: The study examined the impact of foreign direct investment, trade, final consumption expenditures, exports, and imports on the economic growth of Romania. Using yearly data from 1990 to 2020, the study employed a non-linear autoregressive distributed lag technique to analyze the relationship between variables in the short-run and long-run. The findings showed that trade and final consumption expenditures had a positive impact on economic growth through positive and negative shocks, while foreign direct investment had a negative influence. Exports of goods and services were found to have a significant positive influence on economic growth, while imports had a negative association through positive shocks and a positive relation through negative shocks. The study highlights the detrimental impact of foreign direct investment and imports on Romania's economic growth, and suggests the need for conservative measures to address trade and investment uncertainties.

The Nexus between tourism-energy-environmental degradation: Does financial development matter in GCC countries?

Umar Farooq, Mosab Tabash, Mamdouh Abdulaziz Saleh Al-Faryan, Cem Isik, Tarik Dogru

Summary: This study examines the relationship between tourism, energy alternatives, financial development, and pollution emissions. The findings show that tourist arrivals and fossil fuel energy have a positive impact on pollution emissions, while tourism receipts and renewable energy have a negative impact. Financial development moderates the effects of tourist arrivals and fossil fuel energy on pollution emissions. Control variables such as foreign investment, economic growth, and gross capital formation also have a positive impact on CO2 emissions.

Summary: This study examines the impact of house price on money demand in China from 1988Q1 to 2017Q4. Various estimators are used to capture the long-run effect of house price index on money demand, considering interest rate, GDP, and inflation. The results show that house prices, along with other economic factors, are important in explaining the money demand in China. Additionally, wavelet power spectrum and continuous wavelet coherence approaches are employed to analyze the behavior and co-movement between money demand and house price index variables.

Nexuses between rent of natural resources, economic complexity, and technological innovation: The roles of GDP, human capital and civil liberties

Rafael Alvarado, Muntasir Murshed, Javier Cifuentes-Faura, Cem Isik, Mohammad Razib Hossain, Brayan Tillaguango

Summary: One way to achieve sustainable development is through inventions that facilitate the creation of new products and processes. However, there is concern that excessive reliance on natural resource rent hinders technological innovation. This research examines the relationship between natural resource rent, technological innovation, and economic complexity using panel data techniques. Output, human capital, and civil liberties moderate the relationship between these variables. Contrary to expectations, dependence on natural resources does not limit technological innovation in countries. Cointegration tests with structural breaks show a long-term relationship between the variables. Policymakers should use income from natural resource exploitation to encourage technological innovation and diversify the economy for sustainable development.

Adsorption on activated carbon combined with ozonation for the removal of contaminants of emerging concern in drinking water

Summary: This study evaluates the performance of ozonation and adsorption as in-series processes compared to standalone processes for the removal of Contaminants of Emerging Concern (CECs) in drinking water. The combination of both processes proves to be more effective than adsorption and ozonation alone. Ozonation improves the adsorption performance of poorly-oxidizable CECs but worsens that of well-oxidizable compounds. This research highlights the importance of considering both processes in the removal of CECs in drinking water treatment plants.

Summary: The exacerbation of global warming, extreme weather events, and rapid urbanization have led to increased flooding in urban areas. China has adopted sponge city as an efficient means of preventing and controlling urban floods. Using a SWMM-FVCOM model, the hydrological reduction and control effect of sponge city construction (SPCC) within a university campus were evaluated. The study found that implementing SPCC effectively mitigates surface runoff and reduces the severity of urban flooding. However, the efficacy of runoff control decreases with longer rainfall return periods.
