Milk fatty acid (FA) composition is important for the goat dairy industry because of its influence on cheese properties and human health. The aim of the present work was to evaluate the feasibility of NIRS reflectance (oven-dried milk using the DESIR method) and transflectance (liquid milk) analysis to predict milk FA profile and groups of fats in milk samples from individual goats. NIRS analysis of milk samples allowed to estimate FA contents and their ratios and indexes in fat with high precision and accuracy. In general, transflectance analysis gave better or similar results than reflectance mode. Interestingly, NIRS analysis allowed direct prediction of the Atherogenicity and Thrombogenicity indexes, which are useful for the interpretation of the nutritional value of goat milk. Therefore, the calibrations obtained in the present work confirm the viability of NIRS as a fast, reliable and effective analytical method to provide nutritional information of milk samples. Characterisation of aquaponic producers and small-scale facilities in Spain and Latin America

Gina Patricia Suarez-Caceres, Victor M. Fernandez-Cabanas, Jose Lobillo-Eguibar, Luis Perez-Urrestarazu

Summary: Aquaponic producers are typically middle-aged men with moderate education and income. Their main motivations include producing high-quality, healthy food, environmental concern, and gaining autonomy. Aquaponic facilities are mainly used for education, self-consumption, and hobby purposes, rather than economic gain. There is a lack of knowledge and expertise in efficiently operating these complex systems.

Evaluation of Two Equations for Prediction of Digestible Energy in Mixed Feeds and Diets for Horses

Andres Luis Martinez Marin, Emanuela Valle, Domenico Bergero, Francisco Requena, Claudio Forte, Achille Schiavone

Summary: This study evaluated two equations that predict digestible energy in horse feeds. After testing, it was found that one equation performed slightly better than the other. The results suggest that the effects of crude fiber on the digestibility of other components should be reexamined in both equations.

Summary: Nowadays, there is an increasing demand in society for certification and authentication methodologies to clarify the origin of livestock products. This study aimed to establish a methodology to authenticate the grazing activity of dairy goats using Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS) analysis of milk and faeces samples. Good discrimination rates were obtained in both milk and faeces samples, demonstrating differences between the two feeding regimes. This methodology has the potential to be used not only in dairy goat systems but also in other animal species and systems.

Meta-analysis of the effect of black soldier fly larvae meal in diet on broiler performance and prediction of its metabolisable energy value

Andres L. Martinez Marin, Marta Gariglio, Ilaria Biasato, Laura Gasco, Achille Schiavone

Summary: This study conducted a meta-analysis to determine the effects of increasing dietary levels of black soldier fly larvae meal (BSFLM) on broiler performance and developed prediction models for the apparent metabolisable energy corrected to zero nitrogen balance (AMEn) of BSFLM. The results showed that including 15% BSFLM in the diet did not have negative effects on broiler growth performance. Regression analysis and artificial neural network (ANN) models were used to accurately predict the AMEn of BSFLM.

Effects of partially defatted larvae meal of Black Soldier Fly (Hermetia illucens) on caecal microbiota and volatile compounds of Muscovy ducks (Cairina moschata domestica)

Andres L. Martinez Marin, Marta Gariglio, Sara Pozzo, Maria Teresa Capucchio, Ilario Ferrocino, Ilaria Biasato, Achille Schiavone

Summary: This study investigated the effects of replacing maize gluten meal with increasing levels of partially defatted black soldier fly larvae meal (BSFLM) on the caecal microbiota and organic volatile compounds in Muscovy ducks' diets. The results showed that diets containing 6% and 9% BSFLM altered the caecal microbiota of the ducks, while a diet with 3% BSFLM had no effect. The abundance of certain volatile compounds also differed significantly in the 6% and 9% BSFLM treatments. These findings suggest that there is a relationship between the microbiota profile and volatile compounds, which should be further investigated.

The digestion fates of lipids with different unsaturated levels in people with different age groups

Yanan Wang, Jiachen Shi, Yong-Jiang Xu, Chin-Ping Tan, Yuanfa Liu

Summary: This study investigates the variations in lipid digestion profiles among individuals of different ages using in vitro digestion models. The findings suggest that adults have a more comprehensive lipid digestion compared to infants, and infants tend to release shorter chain length and more saturated free fatty acids during digestion. Additionally, the particle sizes in the stomach of the elderly were consistently larger. This study enhances our understanding of how lipids with different degrees of unsaturation undergo digestion in diverse age groups.

Mechanism of aroma enhancement methods in accelerating Congou black tea acidification subjected to room temperature storage

Zixuan Xie, De Zhang, Junyu Zhu, Qianqian Luo, Jun Liu, Jingtao Zhou, Xiaoyong Wang, Yuqiong Chen, Zhi Yu, Dejiang Ni

Summary: This study investigated the acidification of aroma-enhanced black tea during storage. Analysis of non-volatile substances and organic acids using UPLC-Q-TOF/MS and HPLC revealed a decrease in soluble sugars and amino acids, while an increase in organic acids such as oxalic acid, malic acid, and quinic acid. In vitro experiments further demonstrated that the acidification is a result of the decomposition of sugars and amino acids by heating, as well as the oxidation of aromatic aldehydes. Additionally, the study showed that the taste composition of tea infusion is altered, with reduced amino acids, catechins, soluble sugars, and flavonoids. This research provides a theoretical basis for improving the quality of black tea.
