Summary: This paper uses the pilot policy of Accountability Audit of Natural Resource as a quasi-natural experiment to examine its impact on corporate environmental performance (CEP). It also explores the moderating effects of media supervision and the rule of law from an external supervision perspective. The results show that the audit significantly promotes CEP, with media supervision weakening its effects and a higher level of rule of law enhancing its effects. Further analysis indicates that the impact of the audit on CEP is significant in coastal regions and heavily polluting enterprises.

Summary: The study shows that firms headquartered in more corrupt districts tend to pay higher audit fees, have weaker internal controls, and are more likely to restate earnings compared to those in non-corrupt districts. The auditors serving these firms also put in greater effort, possibly due to the additional risks associated with operating in corrupt areas.

Summary: This study aims to enhance the understanding of materiality in sustainability accounting by addressing unresolved theoretical deficiencies. A new conceptual model of materiality is presented, incorporating accountability and stakeholder heterogeneity, to explain how organizations prioritize reporting and managing sustainability issues. The model is illustrated using the multinational organization Exxon as a case study, with empirical evidence confirming its explanatory power in understanding materiality practices, including how unaccountable behavior is addressed.

Summary: Real-time audit is a practice where actions are audited and findings are published during the ongoing process, rather than after it is completed. It has been widely used in auditing COVID-19 relief programs in many countries. While this practice has gained popularity in recent years in the United States and other countries, Israel's SAI has been conducting real-time audits since the 1970s. This article surveys SAI practices in different countries regarding the timeliness of auditing public agencies and analyzes the pros and cons of real-time audits based on Israel's experience. It also provides several issues for SAIs to consider before choosing to conduct a real-time audit.

Summary: Our research shows that the personal income tax of auditors can have a significant impact on audit effort, with the tax rate and amount of loss recognition being crucial factors. Taxes may lead to paradoxical effects on the auditor's effort, audit quality, and marginal audit fee, particularly when profits and losses are taxed differently or when decision-makers are risk-averse. Therefore, taxes can have distortionary effects compared to a pretax setting, resulting in diverse audit quality and marginal audit fees based on national tax law.

Summary: Cloud storage is a crucial method for data storage. However, relying solely on third-party auditors for data integrity verification is not always reliable. To address this issue, this paper proposes a blockchain-based auditing scheme that uses blockchain technology to ensure the reliability of data auditing. By utilizing the quad Merkle hash tree and deploying smart contracts on the blockchain, the proposed scheme improves computing and storage efficiency while providing automated and up-to-date verification of data integrity. Security analysis and experiments confirm the effectiveness and security of the scheme.

Summary: We examine the impact of disclosing critical audit matters (CAMs) on audit effort, investor scrutiny, and investment efficiency. Both auditors and investors can prevent bad investments by examining financial reports for misstatements in investment value. Investment efficiency depends on the investor's access to information. The disclosure of CAMs helps investors evaluate investment risk and gauge auditor effort, enabling investors to adjust scrutiny, potentially influencing auditor effort. We discuss when and why CAMs disclosure can increase or decrease audit effort, investor scrutiny, and investment efficiency. Our analysis has empirical and policy implications.

Summary: This research examines the adoption of sustainability reporting (SR) in NGOs in a developing country context. It finds that attracting donations is a key motivator for SR adoption, rather than demonstrating impact through efficiency, effectiveness, and accountability. Stakeholder pressure, legitimacy, donor dependence, accountability, and media exposure are major drivers of SR adoption, while cultural factors, lack of assurance, and unsupportive government policy present challenges.

Summary: Household solid fuel use is detrimental to health and the environment. The Indian government's PMUY subsidy has successfully promoted the adoption of LPG by millions of households. However, there is limited understanding of the decision-making process to reduce solid fuel use after transitioning to cleaner fuels. This study found that factors such as household wealth, social status, education level, and the prevalence of LPG use in the village are positively associated with LPG consumption and the discontinuation of solid fuel use. On the other hand, factors such as distance to LPG refill delivery, household size, and the PMUY subsidy are negatively associated with the share of LPG use.

Summary: Economic costs are a major political obstacle to investing in climate change mitigation and adaptation measures. The method of financing plays a crucial role in determining public opposition to government green investments, with debt financing being less opposed than broad-based taxes. This study suggests that credit market tools, such as green bonds and debt for climate swaps, can be politically efficient in increasing support for green financing. Carbon taxes and wealth taxes are found to be the most preferred options.

Summary: This paper investigates China's energy trade stability using a survival analysis approach. It finds that the energy trade linkages between China and 153 other countries are complex and unstable, with short periods of trade with many countries. Geopolitically risky regions, such as the Middle East and Africa, have the lowest trade stability. Climate risks have significant effects on energy trade stability. The paper proposes several policy options to improve energy trade stability in China, with special attention to increasing global climate risks.

Summary: This study estimates the willingness to pay of Indian urban consumers for a continuous supply of electricity using contingent valuation method. The findings show that the amount consumers are willing to pay depends on the duration of power outages, with households preferring shorter outages. Income and environmental attitude also positively influence higher willingness to pay. These insights can inform policymakers in designing more reliable and customer-centric energy generation and distribution models.

Summary: This paper addresses the challenges of governing energy procurement from a mix of non-hydropower renewable energy sources supplied by independent producers. Building on political economy analysis and five case studies of independent producer projects from Ethiopia, it seeks to understand the root causes of the protracted delays and limited extent of procurement by independent producers. The key contestations lie in managing long term contracts, risk, uncertainty and in developing the institutional and human capacity to transition.
