The study evaluated the efficiency of different microalgae in the larval rearing of Indian white shrimp, Penaeus indicus. Results showed that a combination of Thalassiosira weissflogii and Tetraselmis sp. had the best survival, growth, and conversion rate, with T. weissflogii demonstrating superior growth potential and nutrient profiles compared to other microalgae. T. weissflogii also exhibited better antimicrobial properties.
To evaluate the efficiency of different microalgae in larval rearing of Indian white shrimp, Penaeus indicus, three different microalgae: Tetraselmis sp., Chaetoceros gracilis and Thalassiosira weissflogii were fed to the shrimp larvae either individually or in combination of two (1:1). The experiment showed that the survival, growth and stage conversion rate were significantly (p < 0.05) higher in combination of T. weissflogii: Tetraselmis sp. followed by T. weissflogii: C. gracilis. Further, significantly faster conversion rate was found in the treatment fed with combination diet (T. weissflogii: Tetraselmis and T. weissflogii: C. gracilis). The growth kinetics of three algae revealed that T. weissflogii had better growth potential than other two algae. The nutrient profiles of three microalgae also underline the nutritional superiority of T. weissflogii in terms of lipid, protein and essential fatty acids (EFA) over the others. Moreover, T. weissflogii showed better antimicrobial properties compared to other algae.

Osmo-ionic regulation in whiteleg shrimp,Penaeus vannamei, exposed to climate change-induced low salinities

Summary: Shrimp aquaculture systems heavily rely on ecosystem services, making them vulnerable to climate change effects. Through experiments, Penaeus vannamei was found to have excellent adaptability to changes in salinity by regulating osmolality and ion concentrations, particularly through increased Na+-K+-ATPase enzyme activity. This strong hyper osmoregulator is considered a top contender for climate-resilient aquaculture.

Summary: Economic loss due to diseases such as EHP and WSSV in Indian shrimp farming was estimated through a questionnaire-based survey, with WSSV causing the highest production loss but EHP contributing significantly as well despite lower occurrence probability. National revenue loss was higher for EHP compared to WSSV due to higher occurrence probability in key shrimp farming states. The study highlighted the need for better management practices and biosecurity protocols in Indian shrimp farming to reduce both direct and indirect losses.

Abundance, community structure and diversity of nitrifying bacterial enrichments from low and high saline brackishwater environments

P. K. Patil, V. Baskaran, T. -N. Vinay, S. Avunje, M. Leo-Antony, M. S. Shekhar, S. V. Alavandi, K. K. Vijayan

Summary: The study revealed diverse nitrifying microbial enrichments from low and high saline ecosystems, with ammonia-oxidizing bacteria and nitrite-oxidizing bacteria showing unique lineages in each environment. The enrichments from low saline environments were dominated by specific microbial groups such as Nitrosomonadaceae, while enrichments from high saline environments had different dominant genera like Nitrospira-like AOBs and Nitrosomonas. RecognitionException: this study found that nitrifying microbial enrichments from low and high saline ecosystems have unique and diverse microbial communities, capable of functioning in different salinity environments.

Summary: The study developed a microbial consortium containing AOB, NOB, and DNB to mitigate total ammonia nitrogen in commercial Penaeus vannamei shrimp farms. The consortium showed significant reduction in TAN levels after application in four commercial shrimp farming sites. The study suggests that the developed microbial formulation could efficiently reduce toxic ammonia species in shrimp culture farms.

Effect of oxytetracycline on the biosafety, gut microbial diversity, immune gene expression and withdrawal period in Pacific whiteleg shrimp, Penaeus vannamei

Summary: The tolerance of Pacific whiteleg shrimp to oxytetracycline is closely related to the dosage. The therapeutic dose does not significantly affect the growth and survival of shrimp, but may have toxic effects on the hepatopancreas and lymphoid organ. In addition, OTC may impact gut microbial diversity, but there is recovery observed 14 days after cessation of treatment.
