Summary: The study found that root production in mangroves on San Andres Island is controlled by soil stress conditions rather than nutrient availability, as seen in other karstic environments. Under low flooding duration, low salinity, and sulfide concentrations, the lowest root biomass allocation and production were observed. However, under high flooding duration and low oxygen conditions, root tissues reached the highest biomass and production values.

Summary: This article extensively examines the interconnection between energy and water in island regions, specifically focusing on the case of San Andres in Colombia. The study aims to achieve a sustainable system in future scenarios by exploring the current state and trends of research in this field. The findings highlight the need for the island to implement measures that enhance sustainability, self-sufficiency, and resilience, particularly in areas experiencing economic growth. Political implications and recommendations have been listed based on the obtained Sankey diagram.

Summary: This study investigated the vulnerability of the San Andres, Providencia, and Santa Catalina archipelago to tropical cyclones, focusing on the impact of Hurricane Iota in 2020. By using synthetic tropical storms and hypothetical hurricanes, the study identified areas at risk of flooding and created flood maps for different return periods. The analysis also highlighted the importance of considering wave contributions in storm surge modeling to avoid underestimating water levels in insular environments. Additionally, the study proposed a methodology that can be applied to other coastal zones, incorporating the effects of climate change on hurricane storm surges and sea-level rise to aid in emergency planning and civil protection measures.

Summary: This research investigates the internal structure and rock properties of the San Andres landslide on El Hierro using multiple geophysical measurements and high-resolution surveys. It reveals that the rocks inside and outside the landslide have similar properties and that the failure primarily occurred along the sliding plane. The obtained information can be used to develop geotechnical slope models and assess related hazards with low probability but high impact potential.

Summary: This article examines the linguistic dispossession of creole-speaking Afrodescendent communities in the Archipelago Colombian island territory of Archipelago of San Andres, Providencia, and Santa Catalina. The sociospatial reconfigurative processes of linguistic dispossession and how it has transformed the landscape, livelihoods, and daily communitive practices of Afrodescendent communities on the island territory are considered. The article analyzes the deliberate linguistic and cultural dispossession carried out by the Colombian State via strategies known as Colombianization and describes the relationship between the loss of local languages, the production of space, and processes of dispossession through education and religion.

Summary: Caribbean islands are highly vulnerable to extreme events like droughts, groundwater pollution, water inequalities, and weak governance, which have caused ongoing and deepening water crises in many island communities dependent on tourism. Despite the implementation of technical solutions like desalination, water crises persist, highlighting pre-existing social inequalities and the connection between injustice, desalination, and the perpetuation of crises over time.

Summary: The first Zika virus outbreak in U.S. Virgin Islands identified over 1000 confirmed cases during January 2016-January 2018, with a majority occurring in July-December 2016. Sociodemographic factors, such as unemployment rates and housing type, played a role in the spread of the virus. Increased temperature was associated with higher case counts, indicating a seasonal association with the outbreak.

Summary: A study evaluated 60 children infected with ZIKV at ages 1-12 months, finding that 15.0% had adverse outcomes in neurologic, hearing, or eye examinations. Furthermore, 12.8% of children had high scores in the hearing-language domain, signaling the need for additional developmental evaluation.

Summary: The document analyzes historical data of the water quality on the surface neritic zone of San Andres Island and proposes a statistical analysis method complementary to ICAM, which can predict future water quality values. The majority of monitoring stations on San Andres Island were found to have water quality ranging from acceptable to optimal, except for two with inadequate quality. Proposed equations can be used as a tool for analysis or as a starting point for developing future scenarios to take preventive and/or regulatory actions.
