The study aimed to investigate anthropometric, maturation, and somatotype differences among youth soccer players based on playing positions, as well as variations in AcL and fitness parameters. Results showed significant differences in body composition and maturity levels among different playing positions, with goalkeepers having higher values and wingers having lower body fat levels. The study also highlighted the importance of increased load in the beginning of the season, with more pronounced differences among player positions in pre-season evaluations.
The purpose of this study was three-fold: (1) to describe anthropometric, maturation, and somatotype differences of players based on playing positions; (2) to analyze variations of accumulated load training (AcL) and fitness parameters between playing positions; and finally (3) to explain the variation of maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max) and peak power (PP) through the AcL, body fat (BF), maturity, somatotype and fitness levels. Twenty-seven male youth soccer players under-16 were divided by the following positions participated in this study: six central midfielders, four wingers (WG), five forwards, eight defenders, and four goalkeepers (GK). They were evaluated on two occasions: pre-season and after-season. Height, sitting height, body mass, BF, girths, percentage of BF (BF%), lean body mass, maturity, somatotype, sprint test, change of direction test, Yo-Yo intermittent recovery test level 1, Wingate, PP, VO2max and fatigue index were assessed. Then, AcL was monitored during training sessions. The main results revealed significant differences between player positions for maturity offset (p = 0.001), for BF (p = 0.006), BF% (p = 0.015), and lean body mass kg (p = 0.003). Also, there were significant differences for AcL and fatigue index in pre-season between player positions (p < 0.05). In addition, there were some significant differences in pre- and after-season for VO2max and PP between player positions (p < 0.05). In conclusion, GK showed higher values in anthropometric, body composition variables and maturity offset compared to the other positions, while WG presented lower levels of BF. In pre-season, there were more differences by player positions for the different variables analyzed than after-season that reinforces the tactical role of the positions, and the emphasis in increased load in the beginning of the season. This study could be used by coaches, staff, and researchers as a reference for athletes of the same sex, age, and competitive level.

Peak running speed can be used to monitor neuromuscular fatigue from a standardized running test in team sport athletes

Joel Garrett, Zeki Akyildiz, Cedric Leduc, Daniel van den Hoek, Filipe Manuel Clemente, Luca Paolo Ardigo

Summary: This study compared the sensitivity of peak running speed measured during a submaximal run test with a countermovement jump test in measuring neuromuscular fatigue, and the results confirm that peak running speed is a cost-effective and real-time feasible method for measuring neuromuscular fatigue.

Summary: One of the most common task constraints in designing small-sided games (SSGs) is to manipulate the pitch size to change the relative area per player. This review aimed to compare the effects of smaller and larger pitch sizes on soccer players' physiological, physical, technical, and tactical responses during SSGs. The results showed that compared to smaller pitches, SSGs played on larger pitches resulted in higher heart rate, perceived exertion, total distance, high-speed running, stretch index, and surface area.

Warm-up optimization in amateur male soccer players: A comparison of small-sided games and traditional warm-up routines on physical fitness qualities

Rohit K. Thapa, Filipe M. Clemente, Jason Moran, Felipe Garcia-Pinillos, Aaron T. Scanlan, Rodrigo Ramirez-Campillo

Summary: The aim of this study was to compare the effects of small-sided soccer games (SSSGs) and traditional warm-up (TWU) routines on physical fitness qualities in soccer players. The results showed that the SSSG warm-up group was more effective at improving CODS and CMJ performance, while the TWU group was more effective at improving linear speed. Soccer coaches can choose between SSSG or traditional warm-up activities according to player needs and preferences, but the superior effects of SSSG suggest it might offer greater benefits than TWU in preparing players for optimal physical output.

Relationships between training load, peak height velocity, muscle soreness and fatigue status in elite-level young soccer players: a competition season study

Hadi Nobari, Ozgur Eken, Okan Kamis, Rafael Oliveira, Pablo Prieto Gonzalez, Rodrigo Aquino

Summary: This study aimed to compare training load parameters, delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS), and fatigue status between season periods (1(st) and 2(nd) halves) in U14 soccer players and to analyze the relationships between training load parameters based on season periods (1(st) and 2(nd) halves) with peak height velocity (PHV), DOMS, and fatigue status in under-14 (U14) young elite soccer players. Additionally, it was intended to analyze if fatigue, DOMS and PHV could explain training load parameters across the season.

Variations in cumulative workload and anaerobic power in adolescent elite male football players: associations with biological maturation

Hadi Nobari, Armin Gorouhi, Javier Mallo, Demetrio Lozano, Pablo Prieto-Gonzalez, Elena Mainer-Pardos

Summary: This study aimed to examine the relationship between maturity status and training intensity in young football players. The results showed a positive correlation between peak height velocity (PHV) and anaerobic power in the early- and end-season stages, as well as an absolute correlation between maturity offset and anaerobic power. The findings suggest that coaches can enhance the physical performance of players by monitoring training loads and maturity status.

Francisco Tomas Gonzalez-Fernandez, Gabriel Delgado-Garcia, Jesus Siquier Coll, Ana Filipa Silva, Hadi Nobari, Filipe Manuel Clemente

Summary: The aim of this study was to analyze the relationships among physical cognitive ability, academic performance, and physical fitness regarding age and sex. The study included 187 students (53.48% male, 46.52% female) aged between 9 and 15 years old (M = 11.97, SD = 1.99) from a town in Jaen, Andalusia, Spain. The results showed a significant relationship between physical fitness, attention, and concentration. There were differences in cognitive functioning scores between sexes and age categories, with girls and older students performing better.

Carmen Galan-Arroyo, David Manuel Mendoza-Munoz, Jorge Perez-Gomez, Claudio Hernandez-Mosqueira, Jorge Rojo-Ramos

Summary: Adolescence is a critical stage of physiological and psychological changes, and fitness work is important during this period. Self-perception of physical fitness is crucial for adolescent health and well-being, and a positive perception is associated with increased physical activity. This study aimed to analyze the self-perceived physical fitness of high school students using the FP VAS A scale, and to investigate differences based on sex and school location. The study also examined the correlations between the FP VAS A items, age, and BMI. Results indicated significant differences between sexes, with boys having higher scores in all items except flexibility. Negative correlations were observed between BMI and overall physical fitness, cardiorespiratory endurance, and movement speed. Age also showed a negative correlation with cardiorespiratory endurance. In conclusion, boys had better self-perception of physical fitness than girls, and school location did not influence self-perceived fitness. Most self-perceived fitness abilities were inversely correlated with BMI.
