Low-cost synthesized pyrazoline derivatives named Pz series (Pz1 and Pz2) were found to have inhibitory impact on the corrosion of API 5L X60 carbon steel in 5 M HCl, with increased inhibition efficiency as the concentration of Pz series molecules increased. Both Pz1 and Pz2 exhibited cathodic and anodic features, with corrosion inhibition efficiencies around 90%.
The inhibitory impact of low-cost synthesized pyrazoline derivatives named Pz series (Pz1 and Pz2) on the corrosion of API 5L X60 carbon steel in 5 M HCl was inspected to serve as corrosion inhibitors against such a solution for its usage in the oilfield well acidization process. Also, the same compounds were unitized as biocides for sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRBs) to inhibit the microbial-induced corrosion effect. This study was conducted via several electrochemical techniques, namely, electrochemical potentiodynamic polarization (EP) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), in addition to computational density functional theory (DFT). The inhibition efficiency (IE) of Pz series on the corrosion of 5L X60 carbon steel in 5 M HCl was found to increase whenever the Pz series molecule concentration was increased. EP measurements revealed that Pz1 and Pz2 have both cathodic and anodic features (mixed inhibitor) and their corrosion IEs were around 90%. The physicochemical properties of the Pz1 and Pz2 compounds were studied using Langmuir adsorption isotherms, where the equilibrium adsorption data were found to follow it accurately. EIS outputs were found to comply with the values obtained from EP. Scanning electron microscopy was used to examine the topographic anisotropy between the inhibited and uninhibited 5L X60 carbon steel samples to double-check the electrochemical findings. DFT calculations and Monte Carlo simulations were utilized to predict the behavior of inhibitors and to rationalize the experimental results. The serial dilution bioassay technique was used to assess the Pz series as potential biocides to counter the effect of SRBs in compliance with the TM0194-2014-SG standard test method, and the results showed the potency of Pz series in inhibiting such bacterial growth.

Poly-condensation of N-(2-acetamido)-2-aminoethanesulfonic acid with formaldehyde for the synthesis of a highly efficient sorbent for Cs(I)

Mohammed F. Hamza, Eric Guibal, Khalid Althumayri, Yuezhou Wei, Ahmed M. Eid, Amr Fouda

Summary: A new sorbent (ACES-F micro-particles) was synthesized by the one-pot reaction of N-(2-acetamido)-2-aminoethanesulfonic acid with formaldehyde. The sorbent showed high sorption capacity for Cs(I) and good selectivity against alkali and other competitor metal ions. It had a fast sorption rate and could be easily desorbed using nitric acid. The sorbent also demonstrated interesting antimicrobial properties and potential for cesium recovery from seawater.

Summary: In this study, effective Gemini cationic surfactants (CSII, CSIV) were synthesized and characterized. The adsorptive properties of CSII and CSIV at HCl/air and C-steel/HCl interfaces were investigated using surface tension and electrochemical parameters. The results showed that CSII and CSIV have high adsorption affinity at the HCl/air interface, with aliphatic chains promoting surfactant adsorption. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and potentiodynamic polarization revealed that CSII and CSIV act as mixed inhibitors, significantly enhancing the charge transfer resistance of C-steel in HCl. Theoretical calculations and simulations supported the experimental findings, demonstrating the relationship between corrosion inhibition and molecular structure.

Summary: The deterioration aspects and fungal strains associated with Papio Hamadryas skeleton dating back to the Greco-Roman period were investigated. Two green synthesized nanoparticles, silver nanoparticles (Ag-NPs) and magnesium nanoparticles (MgO-NPs), were found to effectively suppress fungal growth. Ag-NPs exhibited higher growth inhibition percentages than MgO-NPs at a concentration of 300 ppm. The study recommended the use of Ag-NPs at 300 ppm for disinfection of the archaeological skeleton.

Summary: The electrochemical performance of Fe-14Cr-8Mn alloy in physiological fluids was studied, along with the inhibitory effects of tyrosine, tryptophan, and L-histidine on the alloy's corrosion in simulated body solutions. Surface morphology and elemental composition were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The electrochemical performance was evaluated using potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The results showed that the amino acids inhibited the corrosion of the alloy, with tryptophan being the most effective inhibitor.

Anion Intercalation into Graphite Drives Surface Wetting

Athanasios A. Papaderakis, Andinet Ejigu, Jing Yang, Amr Elgendy, Boya Radha, Ashok Keerthi, Anne Juel, Robert A. W. Dryfe

Summary: The unique layered structure of graphite and its tunable interlayer distance allow for the accommodation of ions into its structure. The smooth and chemically inert nature of the graphite surface makes it an ideal substrate for electrowetting. This study combines these two properties and explores the significant effect of anion intercalation on the electrowetting response of graphitic surfaces. Through in situ Raman spectroscopy, the structural changes during intercalation/deintercalation were studied, providing insights into the influence of intercalation staging on the rate and reversibility of electrowetting. By tuning the intercalant size and stage of intercalation, a fully reversible electrowetting response can be achieved. The approach is extended to biphasic (oil/water) systems, allowing for a fully reproducible electrowetting response with a near-zero voltage threshold and unprecedented contact angle variations.
