Summary: This study investigated the relationship between C-reactive protein (CRP) and inflammatory ratios in acute schizophrenia (SCZ) inpatients. The results showed that neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), and monocyte-lymphocyte ratio (MLR) were positively correlated with CRP levels, while basophil-lymphocyte ratio (BLR) showed no correlation. These associations were independent of sex and type of episode. It suggests that inflammatory ratios can be used as complementary biomarkers to CRP in SCZ patients.

Summary: The review found that NLR is elevated in certain adult psychiatric disorders like schizophrenia, major depressive disorder, and bipolar disorder, but the associations with symptom severity and clinical parameters are not entirely clear. Results in youth populations are similar to those in adults, indicating a need for further research to better understand the relationship between NLR and specific psychiatric disorders. Future work is required to determine the neuroinflammatory mechanisms underlying these disorders.

Summary: This study aimed to explore the role and predictive effects of preoperative inflammation on the primary outcomes after valvular cardiac surgery. The results showed that there was a significant association between preoperative inflammation and adverse outcomes after heart valve surgery. CRP level >5 mg/L effectively predicted postoperative heart failure, and NLR >3.5 had a good predictive effect on all-cause mortality within 30 days after surgery.

Summary: Inflammatory mechanisms and vitamin D play important roles in the pathophysiology of Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). This study found that ASD patients had significantly higher levels of inflammatory markers and significantly lower levels of vitamin D. There was a negative correlation between vitamin D and inflammatory markers.

Summary: The study found an association between white blood cell count and future development of hypertension in the general Japanese population, with an increase in white blood cell count associated with a higher incidence of hypertension. This association remained significant even after adjusting for other risk factors.

Summary: This study investigated the association between neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and C-reactive protein (CRP) with strength, muscle mass, and functional capacity in kidney transplant patients (KTPs). The results showed that NLR and CRP levels were not associated with these muscle-related parameters in KTPs.

Summary: This study found that both sleep disturbance and depression are associated with inflammation, but the role of inflammation in the relationship between sleep disturbance and depression is still unclear. The participants with depression and/or sleep disturbance had higher levels of inflammatory markers compared to those without. Sleep disturbance was positively correlated with inflammatory markers and depressive symptoms even after considering various confounding factors. Inflammatory markers mediated a small portion of the association between sleep disturbance and depression.

Summary: This study compared the levels of inflammatory indicators derived from blood routine tests between adolescents with and without non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI). The results showed that adolescents with NSSI had significantly higher MLR and PLR compared to those without NSSI. MLR and PLR were independently associated with NSSI. ROC curve analysis demonstrated that MLR and PLR can be used to differentiate NSSI from non-NSSI.

Summary: The role of inflammatory factors in the development of restless legs syndrome (RLS) is not well understood. This study conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to investigate the association between serum/plasma levels of inflammatory markers and the risk of RLS. The results indicated a trend of higher levels of C reactive protein (CRP) and neutrophil-to-lymphocyte (NLR) ratio in RLS patients, although statistical significance disappeared after applying the random-effects model. Further studies are needed to confirm the potential role of inflammatory factors in RLS pathogenesis.

Summary: Neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), monocyte-lymphocyte ratio (MLR) and systemic immune-inflammation index (SII index) are commonly used to indicate inflammation. Their relationship with negative symptoms, including anhedonia, in patients with schizophrenia is not well understood. This study found that there were weak to moderate positive correlations between various negative symptoms and blood cell inflammatory ratios in male patients, and weaker correlations in female patients. However, social anhedonia showed a negative correlation with the SII index in females, suggesting a possible different mechanism. Further exploration is needed to understand the relationship between anhedonia and inflammatory markers.

Summary: Youth suicide rates have been increasing in the United States, especially among Black Americans. This study aimed to investigate the unique contribution of racial/ethnic discrimination to childhood suicidal ideation and attempts. The findings showed that racial/ethnic discrimination is disproportionately experienced by Black children and is associated with preadolescent suicidality, emphasizing the need to address discrimination in suicide prevention strategies.

Summary: Childhood adversity exposes youth to multiple negative outcomes. This study examines how a combination of risk and resilience factors impact mental health outcomes in relation to socioeconomic status (SES) and traumatic stressful events (TSEs). The findings highlight the importance of social support as a unique predictor for psychosis spectrum diagnoses and global functioning, and emotional dysregulation as an important predictor for mood disorders. The study underscores the significance of understanding the impact of childhood adversity on maladaptive outcomes within a resilience framework.

Summary: Socioeconomic status (SES) has an impact on cognitive performance, particularly working memory (WM). This study found that both neighborhood SES and parental education were associated with greater activation of the executive system related to WM. Additionally, distinct patterns of brain activity within the executive system were identified, which mediated the relationship between SES and task performance.

Summary: This study investigated the stability of polygenic scores (PGS) in individuals of European American and African American ancestry. The results showed that GWAS results from the same ancestry had high genetic correlations, while PGS calculated from different ancestry GWAS had lower correlations. Furthermore, the stability of PGS was higher for height compared to PTSD or T2D. The study also found that the correlation between PGS was dependent on the sample overlap between discovery GWAS.

Summary: This retrospective study analyzed the clinical and demographic characteristics of adolescents admitted to an acute psychiatric inpatient unit. The findings showed that adolescents with deliberate self-harm (DSH) were more likely to be female, currently experiencing depressive exacerbation, have concurrent suicidal ideation, and a history of alcohol use. There were no significant clinical differences between adolescents admitted following a suicide attempt and those engaging in non-suicidal self-injury.
