Microplastics (MPs) are persistent contaminants in the terrestrial subsurface with significant effects on soil biological and ecosystem functions. Research has focused on the accumulation, fate, and effects of MPs in soil, as well as mitigation measures such as using MP-eating soil bacteria and fungi. Additionally, studies have explored the combined effects of MPs and other environmental contaminants, along with standardization of detection methods for MPs in soils.
Microplastics (MPs) are emerging persistent contaminants in the terrestrial subsurface, and evidence has emerged for significant effects of MPs on the biological and ecosystem functions of soils. Main MP sources include land spreading of sewage sludge and biowaste composts, plastic mulching film used in horticultural fields, waste water irrigation and leachate from the landfills, among others. This updated state-of-the-art review paper describes recent experimental and numerical research and developments in understanding the accumulation and fate and effects of MPs in the soil environment (focusing on their storage, degradation, transportation, leaching to groundwater etc.), followed by mitigation and bioremediation measures, including MP-eating soil bacteria and fungi and the best management practices for reducing MP pollution of soil. Other areas covered are the combined effects of MPs and various other environmental contaminants (heavy metals, organic pollutants and antibiotics) in soil ecosystems and the standardisation of methods for detection, quantification and characterisation of MPs in soils, which is critical for MP research. The paper concludes by identifying knowledge gaps and presents recommendations on prioritised research needs.

Xunchang Fei, Hongping He, Xiaoqing Pi, Xuhong Lu, Qinqin Chen, Jun Ma, Yao Wang, Mingliang Fang, Chuangzhou Wu, Shijin Feng

Summary: This article comprehensively reviews the distribution, behavior, and release of plastic wastes (PWs) in sanitary landfills and uncontrolled dumpsites. The study finds that the weight percentages of PW generally decrease with increasing year of disposal and disposal depth, and are influenced by factors such as disposal duration and country income level. The %PW values in different disposal sites show high regionality and spatial variability and heterogeneity. Additionally, the article summarizes the major processes and pathways of PW in disposal sites.

Geotechnical investigation of low-plasticity organic soil treated with nano-calcium carbonate

Govindarajan Kannan, Brendan C. O'Kelly, Evangelin Ramani Sujatha

Summary: Soil stabilization using nanomaterials, particularly nano-calcium carbonate (NCC), is investigated for its potential application in practical field settings. The study examines the effects of different dosages of NCC on the properties of low-plasticity fine-grained soil, including plasticity index, compaction, unconfined compressive strength, compressibility, and permeability. The results show that a 0.4% dosage of NCC leads to the highest improvement in unconfined compressive strength after 90 days of curing. The addition of NCC also affects the permeability properties of the soil, with initial increases followed by decreases due to the formation of calcium silicate hydrate gel during curing.

Arif Mohammad, Evan K. Paleologos, Pawel Ogrodnik, Eugeniusz Koda, Piotr Osinski, Anna Podlasek, Magdalena Daria Vaverkova, Venkata Siva Naga Sai Goli, Prithvendra Singh, Kai Wang, Xiao - Hui Chen, Aizhong Ding, Ning-Jun Jiang, Yi-Jie Wang, Devendra Narain Singh

Summary: Surface and sub-surface fires in landfills are complex and expected to increase due to climate change. These fires result in the creation of toxic compounds that pose severe health hazards to living entities. Understanding the occurrence mechanisms, waste properties, and detection techniques is crucial for early detection and emergency planning. This review critically assimilates the literature on landfill fires, discussing conditions for initiation and sustenance, short- and long-term hazards, and early warning system techniques.

Unveiling the Microfiber Release Footprint: Guiding Control Strategies in the Textile Production Industry

Mengjing Wang, Junjie Yang, Siwen Zheng, Linran Jia, Zhi Yuan Yong, Ee Ling Yong, Hong Heng See, Jiuwei Li, Yunbo Lv, Xunchang Fei, Mingliang Fang

Summary: This study quantified microfiber emissions from textile production and proposed mitigation measures. Wet-processing steps released 25 times more microfibers than home laundering, with dyeing contributing the most to total emissions. Microfiber release could be reduced by using white coloring, lower dyeing temperature, and shorter duration. Textile production has a substantial impact on microfiber released into the environment, and optimization of material selection, production technologies, and use of recycled materials could be effective mitigation strategies.

Summary: Nanostructured hydroxyapatite (HAP) shows promise as a sustainable substitute for commercial phosphorus fertilizers (CPFs) in agriculture. In this study, we developed a green synthesis approach to convert refractory calcium phosphates (RCPs) to nanoenabled HAP. These HAP nanoparticles with distinct morphologies significantly enhanced phosphorus uptake and utilization in soybean plants. By analyzing the material properties and recruited rhizobacteria, we established a water-root-rhizobacteria synergetic path for phosphorus supply by HAP-based fertilizers.
