Towards the Development of Antioxidant Cerium Oxide Nanoparticles for Biomedical Applications: Controlling the Properties by Tuning Synthesis Conditions

Noemi Gallucci, Giuseppe Vitiello, Rocco Di Girolamo, Paola Imbimbo, Daria Maria Monti, Oreste Tarallo, Alessandro Vergara, Irene Russo Krauss, Luigi Paduano

Summary: CeO2 nanoparticles were synthesized using different capping agents to evaluate their properties, and the study found that the nature of capping agents and synthesis temperature can affect the size, morphology, aggregation, and Ce3+/Ce4+ ratio of the nanoparticles. Notably, CeO2-NPs synthesized at 250 degrees C in the presence of oleylamine showed no aggregation tendency and exhibited remarkable antioxidant activity against oxidative stress.

Recent Advances in Endocrine Disrupting Compounds Degradation through Metal Oxide-Based Nanomaterials

Claudio Imparato, Aurelio Bifulco, Brigida Silvestri, Giuseppe Vitiello

Summary: Endocrine Disrupting Compounds (EDCs) are emerging contaminants that pose toxicity and danger to ecosystems and human health. The presence of EDCs in water and wastewater has become a global problem. Catalytic and photocatalytic degradation processes using metal oxide-based nanostructured materials have been widely explored for the removal of EDCs from water. This review summarizes recent advances in the degradation processes of various classes of EDCs using novel metal oxide-based nanomaterials.

Mimicking the Mammalian Plasma Membrane: An Overview of Lipid Membrane Models for Biophysical Studies

Alessandra Luchini, Giuseppe Vitiello

Summary: Cell membranes are complex biological systems consisting of various lipids and proteins. Biomimetic lipid membranes have been used to study the physical and chemical properties of cell membranes. Future developments in this field include the use of more biologically relevant lipid mixtures and the incorporation of membrane proteins into biomimetic lipid membranes.
