Plant-derived mucus is a non-toxic and biodegradable substance with emerging commercial potential in agriculture, food, cosmetics, and pharmaceutical industries. It can be used as a natural thickener or emulsifier, and also as a coating to extend the shelf life of food products.
Easily sourced mucus from various plant parts is an odorless, colorless and tasteless substance with emerging commercial potential in agriculture, food, cosmetics and pharmaceuticals due to its non-toxic and biodegradable properties. It has been found that plant-derived mucilage can be used as a natural thickener or emulsifier and an alternative to synthetic polymers and additives. Because it is an invisible barrier that separates the surface from the surrounding atmosphere, it is used as edible coatings to extend the shelf life of fresh vegetables and fruits as well as many food products. In addition to its functional properties, mucilage can also be used for the production of nanocarriers. In this review, we focus on mucus extraction methods and its use as a natural preservative for fresh produce. We detailed the key properties related to the extraction and preservation of food, the mechanism of the effect of mucus on the sensory properties of products, coating methods when using mucus and its recipe for preserving fruit and vegetables. Understanding the ecological, economic and scientific factors of production and the efficiency of mucus as a multi-directional agent will open up its practical application in many industries.

Rajat Singh, Rahul Mehra, Ankita Walia, Simmy Gupta, Prince Chawla, Harish Kumar, Atul Thakur, Ravinder Kaushik, Naveen Kumar

Summary: This review summarises the progress that has been made in silver nanoparticles (NPs) based colorimetric quantification of toxic metal ions in the water and environmental samples. Due to the anthropogenic activities, contamination of metallic ions in the ecosystem rapidly increased, inflicting serious illness to human and aquatic life. Consequently, to monitor the presence of metallic ions in the environment and waterbodies a simple and rapid assay is urgently needed. Recently, silver NPs based colorimetric assay has received tremendous interest in simple and fast determination of toxic metal ions.

Summary: COVID-19 is a global pandemic caused by SARS-coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2). The development of new vaccines with innovative technologies has revolutionized the field of vaccinology. These vaccines use mRNA encoding the Spike SARS-CoV-2 protein or recombinant adenovirus vectors to introduce the Spike protein gene into cells, allowing for faster updates to combat new variants. However, effective control of these variants requires a rapid and widespread vaccination policy with sufficient vaccine doses.

Renata Nurzynska-Wierdak, Dominika Pietrasik, Magdalena Walasek-Janusz

Summary: Acne is a chronic disease with significant therapeutic, psychological, and social concerns. Treatment often involves antibiotics, contributing to antibiotic resistance. Essential oils have emerged as potential alternatives due to their antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties. Tea tree oil, for example, has shown effectiveness in treating inflammatory acne lesions. This paper presents the latest scientific evidence on the activity and potential use of specific essential oils in acne treatment.

Mechanistic correlation between mitochondrial permeability transition pores and mitochondrial ATP dependent potassium channels in ischemia reperfusion

Rajalaxmi Behera, Veerta Sharma, Amarjot Kaur Grewal, Amit Kumar, Bhaskar Arora, Agnieszka Najda, Ghadeer M. Albadrani, Ahmed E. Altyar, Mohamed M. Abdel-Daim, Thakur Gurjeet Singh

Summary: Mitochondrial dysfunction is a fundamental cause of ischemia reperfusion (I/R) damage, which refers to the paradoxical progression of cellular dysfunction and death when blood flow is restored to previously ischemic tissues. The opening of mitochondrial permeability transition pores (MPTP) due to increased mitochondrial permeability is a key factor in I/R injury. The interaction between MPTP and mitoKATP and their roles in I/R injury are the focus of this review.

Identification and Assessment of Therapeutic Phytoconstituents of Catharanthus roseus through GC-MS Analysis

Jyoti Rani, Manish Kapoor, Sanju Bala Dhull, Gulden Goksen, Slaven Juric

Summary: The leaves of Catharanthus roseus contain a complex array of secondary metabolites, making them of interest in various fields, including pharmaceuticals. A comprehensive method is needed to analyze the chemical composition of plant samples for metabolite identification. This research aims to provide supplementary data on the chemical composition of twenty-five different accessions of C. roseus leaves using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The study reveals a wide range of phytochemicals and proposes statistical analyses, such as principal components analysis (PCA) and hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA), to further investigate the metabolites of C. roseus leaves.

Hazardous impacts of glyphosate on human and environment health: Occurrence and detection in food

Deeksha Rawat, Aarti Bains, Prince Chawla, Ravinder Kaushik, Rahul Yadav, Anil Kumar, Kandi Sridhar, Minaxi Sharma

Summary: With the decreasing farming lands due to the growing human population, agricultural scientists are developing new strategies for effective crop management. However, the excessive use of herbicides to deal with the loss caused by small plants and herbs has raised concerns about its environmental and health effects. Glyphosate, extensively used for the past 40 years with assumed negligible effects, has now been classified as a carcinogenic toxic component by the World Health Organization and banned in 2017. This review discusses the importance of glyphosate monitoring in the food matrix, its environmental and health effects, and advanced analytical techniques for its detection.

Summary: In this study, the ethanol extract from the mycelial culture of Agrocybe aegerita was evaluated for its antioxidant activity and its potential to inhibit the virulence factor responsible for quorum-sensing activity and antibiofilm activity of pathogenic Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO1 strain. The extract showed dose-dependent inhibition for DPPH and nitric oxide assays, and analysis confirmed the presence of phenolic compounds, carotenoids, and ascorbic acid. The extract also significantly inhibited the production of pyocyanin and pyoverdine, reduced swarming motility, and inhibited biofilm formation of Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

Summary: The aim of this study was to evaluate the possibility of using marjoram and thyme essential oils to inhibit the growth of microorganisms in poultry meatballs. The results showed that the essential oils had inhibitory effects on the growth of bacteria, with the effectiveness depending on the concentration and type of oil. However, higher concentrations of essential oils resulted in decreased acceptance of the smell and taste of the meatballs. The addition of essential oils significantly reduced the total number of microorganisms in the meatballs, particularly at a concentration of 1 mg/g.
