Summary: This study found associations between physical function and activity metrics other than MVPA among older adults, with steps showing a significant relationship with physical function in adults aged 75+. The study also found that worse function was more pronounced in participants with the lowest levels of MVPA. These findings support research on broader activity patterns for improving function in older adults.

Summary: This study examined the associations between sedentary time, lower intensity physical activity, higher intensity physical activity and the incidence of depressive symptoms. The results showed that sedentary time and higher intensity physical activity were not significantly associated with depressive symptoms, while higher levels of lower intensity physical activity were significantly associated with depressive symptoms in women.

Summary: This longitudinal study found that in women, childhood behavioral activity was associated with late-life sedentary behavior, and middle-age negative affectivity was associated with lower moderate-to-vigorous physical activity in later life. These findings suggest that individual characteristics may play a role in promoting physical activity and reducing sedentary behavior.

Summary: Among community-dwelling Japanese older adults, more frequent excursions from home were associated with more PA, less SB, and more-favorable SB patterns, suggesting a potential strategy for preventive health initiatives. The study found that the frequency of excursions from home was associated with physical activity and sedentary behavior in older adults, with slight differences observed between men and women.

Summary: This article introduces a tri-axis accelerometer with a digital readout circuit and communication system. The device consists of resonant accelerometers in the x and y-axis and a seesaw capacitive one in the z-axis. The measurement is based on FPGA and test results show low bias instability, cross-coupling error, and nonlinearity. This tri-axis digital accelerometer with serial ports is more valuable than previous works with large commercial instruments.

Summary: The study found that higher sedentary time (ST) was associated with lower composite physical function (CPF) score, while higher moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) was associated with better CPF score. Breaks in sedentary time (BST) were not related to physical independence after accounting for MVPA and ST. MVPA was found to moderate the relationship between ST and physical independence.

Summary: This study investigated the longitudinal development of physical activity and sedentary time in children aged 3-9 years from Western Norway. The results showed that physical activity levels peaked between the ages of 3 and 8, with boys having higher levels and more favorable trajectories than girls. Sedentary time increased from ages 3 to 9. Changes over time were larger for weekdays compared to weekend days and for preschool/school hours compared to after school hours. Standardizing epoch length will help in comparing physical activity and sedentary behavior across studies.

Summary: Previous studies have found that the relationship between sedentary time and overweightness/obesity is unclear. This study aimed to examine the associations between sedentary time, particularly short video viewing (SVV), and overweightness/obesity in Chinese community-dwelling older women. The results showed that sedentary behavior, especially SVV, was associated with higher indicators of overweightness/obesity. Reduction in SVV, especially in the food category, may be an effective way to prevent overweightness/obesity.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the associations between physical activity (PA), sedentary behavior (SB), and fear of falling (FOF) in older Chinese women. The results showed that replacing 30 minutes of sedentary behavior with moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) was associated with a reduction in FOF, while replacing 30 minutes of MVPA with sedentary behavior was associated with higher FOF. These findings suggest that increasing engagement in MVPA and reducing sedentary behavior can be beneficial for managing FOF in older women, especially those with fall experience.

Summary: Mental toughness is crucial for adolescent athletes in their athletic careers and lives. This study explores the relationship between belief in a just world, meaning in life, and mental toughness. The results suggest that belief in a just world positively correlates with mental toughness, partially mediated by the search for meaning and the presence of meaning in life. It is worth noting that the presence of meaning plays a more influential role than the search for meaning.

Summary: This meta-analysis of data from 21 cohorts across six continents found that women have a higher risk of developing dementia than men, especially in low- and lower-middle-income economies. Longer education and former alcohol use are stronger risk factors for dementia in men than in women, while other risk factors have similar effects in both genders.

Summary: This study aimed to examine the longitudinal changes in physical activity and associated factors among older Japanese men and women. The results showed that there was a significant decrease in physical activity over 2 years in women but not in men. Higher baseline physical activity levels and older age were associated with a decrease in physical activity for both genders. Factors such as current drinking and faster maximum gait speed were associated with increases in physical activity among men, while factors such as poor economic status and social isolation were associated with increases in physical activity among women.
