A study was conducted on 3998 community-dwelling Japanese adults aged 65 years and older to determine their levels of physical activity and sedentary time. The results showed that the subjects generally adhered to the physical activity guideline, but adherence decreased with older age. The study also found that sedentary time was high, but majority of the subjects met the current physical activity guideline by engaging in moderate-to-vigorous-intensity physical activity.
Background: The amounts of moderate-to-vigorous-intensity physical activity (MVPA), light-intensity physical activity (LPA), and sedentary time (ST) by sex, age, and body mass index (BMI) in older Japanese adults have not been known. We conducted this study to determine the actual physical activity (PA) and ST in this population. Subjects and Methods: A total of 3998 community-dwelling Japanese adults aged >= 65 years were investigated. Their levels of PA and ST and number of steps taken daily were assessed for seven consecutive days by a tri-axial accelerometer. Normative values of daily PA and ST were analyzed by age and BMI groups in the men and the women and are presented as mean, median, or decile. Results: The subjects generally adhered to the PA guideline, i.e., >= 10 metabolic equivalents (METs)center dot hour MVPA per week. Older age was associated with lower adherence to the PA guideline. Conclusions: Normative values (mean, median, or decile) were yielded for MVPA, LPA, and ST based on accelerometer readings in a large sample of older community-dwelling Japanese adults. One-half of the subjects' waking time was spent being sedentary, and >70% of the subjects met the current PA guideline by engaging in MVPA.

Harukaze Yatsugi, Tao Chen, Si Chen, Xin Liu, Hiro Kishimoto

Summary: This study investigated the associations of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) with physical function in older Japanese men and women, and found a positive correlation between MVPA and physical function levels.

Associations between sedentary behaviour, physical activity and frailty in older Chinese women: A cross-sectional study

Ting Li, Yang Pan, Qiang He, Litao Du, Ke Chen, Xiaoyu Ren, Si Chen, Xianliang Zhang

Summary: This study investigated the association between sedentary behavior, physical activity, and frailty and frailty subdomains in community-dwelling older women. The results showed that increasing moderate-to-vigorous physical activity and reducing sedentary behavior can help address frailty in this population.

Short Video Viewing, and Not Sedentary Time, Is Associated with Overweightness/Obesity among Chinese Women

Ke Chen, Qiang He, Yang Pan, Shuzo Kumagai, Si Chen, Xianliang Zhang

Summary: Previous studies have found that the relationship between sedentary time and overweightness/obesity is unclear. This study aimed to examine the associations between sedentary time, particularly short video viewing (SVV), and overweightness/obesity in Chinese community-dwelling older women. The results showed that sedentary behavior, especially SVV, was associated with higher indicators of overweightness/obesity. Reduction in SVV, especially in the food category, may be an effective way to prevent overweightness/obesity.

Reallocating Time Spent in Physical Activity, Sedentary Behavior and Its Association with Fear of Falling: Isotemporal Substitution Model

Pengfei Ren, Xianliang Zhang, Litao Du, Yang Pan, Si Chen, Qiang He

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the associations between physical activity (PA), sedentary behavior (SB), and fear of falling (FOF) in older Chinese women. The results showed that replacing 30 minutes of sedentary behavior with moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) was associated with a reduction in FOF, while replacing 30 minutes of MVPA with sedentary behavior was associated with higher FOF. These findings suggest that increasing engagement in MVPA and reducing sedentary behavior can be beneficial for managing FOF in older women, especially those with fall experience.

Associations between objectively measured pattern of physical activity, sedentary behavior and fear of falling in Chinese community-dwelling older women

Litao Du, Xianliang Zhang, Wenbo Wang, Qiang He, Ting Li, Si Chen, Yang Pan

Summary: This cross-sectional study examined the associations of objectively-measured physical activity and sedentary behavior patterns with fear of falling in Chinese community-dwelling older women. The study found that total physical activity time, sporadic physical activity time, and daily steps were independently associated with fear of falling.

Belief in a Just World and Mental Toughness in Adolescent Athletes: The Mediating Mechanism of Meaning in Life

Siyu Tian, Si Chen, Yuming Cui

Summary: Mental toughness is crucial for adolescent athletes in their athletic careers and lives. This study explores the relationship between belief in a just world, meaning in life, and mental toughness. The results suggest that belief in a just world positively correlates with mental toughness, partially mediated by the search for meaning and the presence of meaning in life. It is worth noting that the presence of meaning plays a more influential role than the search for meaning.

Association between mental health and academic performance among university undergraduates: The interacting role of lifestyle behaviors

Tianshu Chu, Xin Liu, Shigemi Takayanagi, Tomoko Matsushita, Hiro Kishimoto

Summary: This study found that impaired mental health status in the first semester of university study significantly predicts an increased incident risk of poor academic performance during the overall undergraduate period. This association remains significant even after adjusting for health lifestyle behaviors, but disappears in the low-lifestyle-behavior-risk group.

Summary: This meta-analysis of data from 21 cohorts across six continents found that women have a higher risk of developing dementia than men, especially in low- and lower-middle-income economies. Longer education and former alcohol use are stronger risk factors for dementia in men than in women, while other risk factors have similar effects in both genders.

The Impact of Nutrition and Oral Function Exercise on among Community-Dwelling Older People

Asuka Tani, Shinsuke Mizutani, Hiro Kishimoto, Saori Oku, Kiyomi Iyota, Tianshu Chu, Xin Liu, Haruhiko Kashiwazaki

Summary: Decline in oral function in older people is related to nutritional deficiencies, increasing frailty risk and need for nursing care. This study compared the effectiveness of delivering an oral function improvement program through a tablet device versus a paper-based program. The association between improvement in tongue pressure and nutritional status at baseline was also investigated.

Longitudinal Changes in Moderate to Vigorous Physical Activity in Community-Dwelling Older Men and Women: A 2-Year Prospective Cohort Study in Japan

Tao Chen, Sanmei Chen, Takanori Honda, Yu Nofuji, Hiro Kishimoto, Kenji Narazaki

Summary: This study aimed to examine the longitudinal changes in physical activity and associated factors among older Japanese men and women. The results showed that there was a significant decrease in physical activity over 2 years in women but not in men. Higher baseline physical activity levels and older age were associated with a decrease in physical activity for both genders. Factors such as current drinking and faster maximum gait speed were associated with increases in physical activity among men, while factors such as poor economic status and social isolation were associated with increases in physical activity among women.
