Through molecular and morphological analyses, the distinctiveness of Friesea grisea specimens from South Georgia within the genus Friesea has been confirmed. Friesea is one of the most speciose genera of Collembola in the Antarctic region, and the study provides detailed species identification keys and compares the biogeography of Friesea to other springtail species.
The pan-Antarctic distributions of several collembolan species have been supported by morphology for over 120 years. However, for most species where molecular data are available, these are now known to belong instead to several species, and most classified as short-range endemics. One such species, Friesea grisea, had a pan-Antarctic distribution that has been in question, but until recently, specimens of F. grisea from the type locality on South Georgia have not been included in any molecular appraisal. Here, we compare the molecular identity of specimens of F. grisea, from South Georgia, with other Antarctic and sub-Antarctic species using the mitochondrial COI gene. A Bayesian phylogenetic analysis for 14 species of Friesea from southern regions, including F. grisea sensu stricto with species previously identified as 'F. grisea' (F. antarctica, F. gretae and F. propria) confirms the distinctness of the South Georgian specimens based on molecular data, and these results are confirmed morphologically. The genus Friesea is one of the most speciose genera of Collembola known in the Antarctic region, and we provide an annotated key (dichotomous and interactive versions) to all Friesea species in the sub-Antarctic and Antarctica. We compare the biogeography of Friesea to other Collembola from the region to highlight our current understanding of species boundaries and island linkages.

Summary: This study describes three new species in the subgenus Setogaster Salmon of the Australian genus Lepidocyrtus, which are widely distributed and numerically dominant in Australia, living in different habitats and regions, and are considered to be endemic species.

Two new species of Acanthocyrtus Handschin, 1925 (Collembola, Entomobryidae, Entomobryinae) from Western Australia

Nikolas Gioia Cipola, Penelope Greenslade

Summary: Two new species of Acanthocyrtus, Acanthocyrtus necropolitanus and A. pallidus, are described in this study. These two species resemble other congenerics with smooth prelabral chaetae and a unique dorsal chaetotaxy pattern, but they are distinguished from others by the presence of labral papillae, which is a newly discovered feature in the genus. An identification key for all species in the genus is provided. The description of these two Acanthocyrtus species now increases from six to eight and they are known to be found in southwestern Australia.

Onychiuridae (Collembola) of Australia: a key to species with notes on their distributions and pest status

Penelope Greenslade, John Ireson

Summary: This study revises the onychiurid fauna in Australia, identifying six species belonging to different genera. These species are mostly introduced to Australia from the Northern Hemisphere, and are primarily found in agricultural and horticultural soils, home gardens, and worm beds. The study provides a dichotomous key along with updated names, descriptions, and distribution and ecology information for each species. It also discusses the pest status of onychiurids in relation to root damage in home gardens and field crops in Australia. The aim of the study is to offer an identification guide for field workers to determine the need for control methods.

An annotated checklist of the Collembola (Hexapoda) from Iran

Summary: Based on literature sources, we have compiled a catalogue of the genera and species of springtails (Collembola) found in Iran, located in Southwest Asia. The catalogue includes 301 named species, with 286 described species in 109 genera from 20 families recorded in Iran. It also provides information on dubious species and genera with unknown species, as well as details on biology, geographical distribution, ecology, authorship records, and bibliographical data of Iranian Collembola.

A new species of Troglopedetes Joseph, 1872 with eyes (Collembola, Paronellidae) from a Christmas Island Cave, Australia

Nikolas Gioia Cipola, Penelope Greenslade

Summary: A new species of Troglopedetes Joseph, called Troglopedetes eberhardi sp. nov., is described and illustrated in this article. It shares similarities with other species in terms of eye presence and the arrangement of chaetotaxy along the body, but differs in certain features such as head chaetotaxy, fourth abdominal segment, and an elongated unguis median tooth. This is the first record of Troglopedetes in Australia, adding to the current total of 37 nominal species, nine of which have eyes.

Two high-quality de novo genomes from single ethanol-preserved specimens of tiny metazoans (Collembola)

Summary: The novel ultra-low input protocol allows for high-quality genome sequencing from single specimens of minute, field-preserved metazoans, providing a new approach for biodiversity research. The genomes of two submillimeter Collembola species were successfully sequenced, demonstrating the feasibility and effectiveness of this method.
