A strategy to convert by isomerization-hydroboration-oxidation reaction the internal double bond of oleic acid to a terminal alcohol function, leading to linear long-chain ,-difunctional substrates has been investigated. Using this strategy, oleic acid-based AB- and AA-monomers were prepared and characterized by FTIR-ATR and NMR spectroscopy. Thermoplastic aliphatic linear polyesters, polycarbonates, and polyurethanes were then synthesized by reacting the so-formed bio-based monomers via polycondensation in bulk, using 1,5,7-triazabicyclo[4.4.0]dec-5-ene (TBD) as an organocatalyst. Thus, starting from easily available bio-based starting compound, the synthesis of linear long methylene chain aliphatic polyesters, polycarbonates, and polyurethanes (by isocyanate free route) is reported. The structural and thermal characterizations of the synthesized polymers were performed by means of NMR, SEC, DSC, and TGA experiments. Practical applications: The objective of the work is to obtain long methylene sequence alpha, omega difunctional fatty acid-based substrates that can be used as original monomers.

Summary: This review summarizes the latest advancements in the development of hybrid nonisocyanate polyurethanes (NIPUs) by combining them with other polymers, such as epoxy, polyacrylic, and silicium-containing polymers. The potential of combining NIPUs with biopolymers is also discussed. The study highlights the importance of synergistic combination of NIPUs with other polymers in the formation of novel materials.

Sequence-Controlled Polyhydroxyurethanes with Tunable Regioregularity Obtained from Sugar-Based Vicinal Bis-cyclic Carbonates

Summary: The carbonation of biosourced 1,2-diols is a sustainable approach for synthesizing bis-five-membered cyclic carbonates (bis-5CCs), which are precursors for valuable polymers such as polyhydroxyurethanes (PHUs). In this study, we carried out the direct carbonation of optically pure sugar-based butadiene tetraols and obtained vicinal bis-5CCs, erythritol dicarbonate (EDC) and threitol dicarbonate (TDC), while retaining the stereochemistry of the starting tetraols. The aminolysis reaction of these compounds showed that the kinetics and regio-orientation of the ring opening of the 5CCs are highly dependent on their stereochemistry. By utilizing this feature, a one-pot, two-step polymerization procedure was developed to create sequence-controlled PHUs. The experimental results were supported by density functional theory calculations, and a new family of PHUs with tunable sequence and regioregularities was discovered.

Summary: Fast, low-cost, and efficient energy storage is needed to balance intermittent sustainable energy sources. High-power capacitors made with organic polymers, such as bio-based PHUs, offer a green and scalable solution. These PHUs have high permittivity, high breakdown strength, and low dielectric losses, resulting in comparable energy storage performance to petrochemical materials and high discharge efficiency.
