Summary: Mixed carboxylic anhydrides were directly accessed for the first time through homogeneous palladium catalysis from 1,3-butadiene and carboxylic acids. The respective mixed 3,8-nonadienoic anhydrides were formed in a single reaction step under carbonylative telomerization conditions with high yields. These highly reactive mixed anhydrides can be used consecutively in a one-pot manner and selectively transfer the newly formed unsaturated C9 unit.

Summary: Sugar esters (SE) are amphiphilic compounds with environmentally friendly features, including non-toxicity, odorless, tasteless, biodegradability, and various functions. The use of lipases as biocatalysts for SE production offers advantages such as reduced energy consumption, higher selectivity, and less use of harmful solvents. Supercritical fluids, especially carbon dioxide, are attractive solvents for SE production due to their unique properties. However, there are challenges in terms of operating conditions and costs. Future research should focus on developing cost-effective bioreactors and enhancing lipases' stability. Rating: 8

Summary: This study reports the enzymatic synthesis of rhamnose fatty acid esters through transesterification using lipase from Pseudomonas stutzeri as a biocatalyst. Optimum conditions were determined for achieving high conversion and regioselectivity, and the role of various reaction conditions was investigated. The use of specific solvents and acyl donors with different chain lengths greatly influenced the efficiency of the reaction. The enzyme's regioselectivity and its ability to accommodate ester chains of different lengths were explained through molecular modeling and simulation studies.

Summary: Biodiesel is a renewable fuel used worldwide in transportation, gradually replacing conventional fuels. This article provides an overview of the synthesis of fatty acid monoalkyl esters (FAAE) with a C3+ alkyl chain, and compares the properties of FAAEs with each other, with FAME and FAEE, and with fuel standards. The length of the alkyl chain and the fatty acid part of the molecule have a significant influence on the properties of FAAEs.

Summary: Isostearic acid, a saturated branched chain fatty acid with interesting physicochemical properties, is a valuable compound in the oleochemical industry. Traditional production methods are inefficient, leading to research focus on new catalytic systems based on zeolites. Zeolites have been found to offer higher yields of isostearic acid and the ability to optimize catalysts for specific product compositions.

Summary: The carbonation of biosourced 1,2-diols is a sustainable approach for synthesizing bis-five-membered cyclic carbonates (bis-5CCs), which are precursors for valuable polymers such as polyhydroxyurethanes (PHUs). In this study, we carried out the direct carbonation of optically pure sugar-based butadiene tetraols and obtained vicinal bis-5CCs, erythritol dicarbonate (EDC) and threitol dicarbonate (TDC), while retaining the stereochemistry of the starting tetraols. The aminolysis reaction of these compounds showed that the kinetics and regio-orientation of the ring opening of the 5CCs are highly dependent on their stereochemistry. By utilizing this feature, a one-pot, two-step polymerization procedure was developed to create sequence-controlled PHUs. The experimental results were supported by density functional theory calculations, and a new family of PHUs with tunable sequence and regioregularities was discovered.
