Determination of Galantamine solubility (an anti-alzheimer drug) in supercritical carbon dioxide (CO2): Experimental correlation and thermodynamic modeling

This study reports the first measurement of Galantamine solubility in supercritical fluids, providing valuable data on the effects of temperature and pressure. Various models were employed for analysis, and self-consistency tests were conducted to verify the results, ultimately calculating enthalpies for the process.
When designing particle formation processes, obtaining sufficient knowledge and data about the solid solute solubility in the super-critical fluids (SCF) is inevitable. Because, this basic information provides a valuable substructure for nano and micro particle production. Therefore, we measured Galantamine (GTM,) solubility for the first time. In this study, tests have been accomplished at a temperature from 308 to 338 K and pressure of 12,15,18,21 and 27 MPa. In addition, solubility of GTM mole fraction in SC-CO2 ranged from 0.031 x 10(-4) - 0.174 x 10(-4), 0.022 x 10(-4) to 0.202 x 10(-4), 0.006 x 10(-4) to 0.233 x 10(-4) and 0.010 x 10(-4) to 0.230 x 10(-4) at 308, 318, 328 and 338 K, respectively. PRSV and Peng-Robinson equation of states (vdW2 mixing rules), Wilson's model and also 6 semiempirical models like Bartle et al., Sodeifian et al., Garlapati-Madras, Bian et al., and Chrastil, Mendez-Santiago-Teja (MST), has been used for GTM solubility in SC-CO2. Furthermore, we carried out self-consistency tests to solubility of GTM in SC-CO2. At the end, approximated value of total (Delta H-total), solvation (Delta H-sol) as well as vaporization (Delta H-vap), enthalpies have been calculated. (C) 2021 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
