Summary: Allergic rhinitis is an inflammatory disease caused by an IgE-mediated immune response to inhaled allergens and is prevalent worldwide. The Cluster of Differentiation 14 (CD14) gene, which encodes a receptor for lipopolysaccharides and inhaled endotoxins, has been implicated in the development of allergic diseases. This study aimed to investigate the association between a specific polymorphism in the CD14 gene and the risk and severity of allergic rhinitis in Egyptian patients. The findings suggest that serum CD14 levels and certain gene variants may be potential biomarkers and predictors for allergic rhinitis.

Summary: According to a population-based survey in South Africa, the estimated number of SARS-CoV-2 infections is 7.8 times higher than the reported COVID-19 cases. The infection fatality rate (IFR) varies by 2.39 times when calculated using recorded COVID-19 deaths compared to excess-mortality-derived COVID-19-attributable deaths. Waning RBD IgG may have underestimated the number of infections and overestimated the mortality risk.

Summary: This study investigated the antibody responses and protection following the second doses of ChAdOx1 or BNT162b2 vaccines against SARS-CoV-2 in the general population of the United Kingdom. The results showed significant boosting of anti-spike IgG antibody levels after the second doses of both vaccines, with BNT162b2 generating higher peak levels than ChAdOX1. Older individuals, males, and prior infection influenced the antibody levels. The levels of anti-spike IgG were associated with protection from infection after vaccination, and previous infection enhanced antibody peak levels and half-life. At least 67% protection against infection is estimated to last for 2-3 months after two ChAdOx1 doses, 5-8 months after two BNT162b2 doses in uninfected individuals, and 1-2 years after natural infection in unvaccinated individuals. A third booster dose may be necessary, prioritizing ChAdOx1 recipients and those more clinically vulnerable.

While antibody responses to S protein persist, levels of antibody response to N protein decrease over time. Summary: This study investigates the relationship between educational disparities and the risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection and mortality in Rome in 2020. The findings suggest that individuals with lower levels of education had a lower risk of infection compared to those with higher levels of education until May 2020. However, from September to December, low-educated adults had a 25% higher risk of infection. Similarly, there were significant educational inequalities in mortality within 30 days of the onset of infection.
