Increasing evidence demonstrates that perinatal exposure to Bisphenol A (BPA) can cause immune disorders throughout the life span. However, the biological basis for these immune disorders is poorly understood and the effects of exposure to BPA on Th17 development are unknown. The present study sought to characterize alterations of Th17 cells in childhood and adulthood following gestational and lactational exposure to environmentally relevant low-dose of BPA and the underlying mechanisms. Pregnant dams were exposed to BPA (10, 100 or 1000 nM) via drinking water from gestational day (GD) 0 to postnatal day (PND) 21. At PNDs 21 and 42, offspring mice were anesthetized, blood was obtained for cytokine assay and spleens were collected for Th17 cell frequency and ROR gamma t mRNA expression analysis. Perinatal exposure to low-dose BPA resulted in a dose-dependent and gender-specific persistent rise in Th17 cells accompanied by an increase of ROR gamma t mRNA expression in the offsprings. The contents of major Th17 cell-derived cytokines (IL-17 and IL-21) and those essential for Th17 cell differentiation (IL-6 and IL-23) were also increased compared to those in controls. These changes were more pronounced in female than in male offsprings. However, perinatal exposure to low-dose BPA had little effect on serum TGF-S, another key regulator for Th17 cell development. Our results suggest that gestational and lactational exposure to a low-dose of BPA can affect Th17 cell development via an action on its transcription factor and the regulatory cytokines. These findings provide novel insight into sustained immune disorders by BPA exposure during development. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Tunable liquid-solid hybrid thermal metamaterials with a topology transition

Peng Jin, Jinrong Liu, Liujun Xu, Jun Wang, Xiaoping Ouyang, Jian-Hua Jiang, Jiping Huang

Summary: Thermal metamaterials provide rich control of heat transport by breaking the Onsager reciprocity and introducing thermal convection, leading to a regime beyond effective heat conduction. A continuous switch from thermal cloaking to thermal concentration is demonstrated in a liquid-solid hybrid thermal metamaterial with external tuning. This switch is achieved by tuning the liquid flow, resulting in a topology transition in the virtual space of the thermotic transformation. These findings illustrate the extraordinary heat transport in complex multicomponent thermal metamaterials and pave the way toward an unprecedented regime of heat manipulation.

Case report: Novel ETFDH compound heterozygous mutations identified in a patient with late-onset glutaric aciduria type II

Sijia Zhu, Dongxue Ding, Jianhua Jiang, Meirong Liu, Liqiang Yu, Qi Fang

Summary: The study reported a 21-year-old Chinese man with late-onset glutaric aciduria type II (GA II) who presented with muscle weakness, vomiting, and severe pain. Muscle biopsy revealed lipid storage myopathy, and urine organic acid analyses showed an increase in glycolic acid, consistent with GA II. Whole-exome sequencing identified two novel compound heterozygous missense mutations in the ETFDH gene, expanding the list of mutations associated with GA II. Considering the treatability of this disease, GA II should be considered in patients with muscular symptoms and acute metabolism decompensation.

A new allele PEL9GG identified by genome-wide association study increases panicle elongation length in rice (Oryza sativa L.)

Xiaojing Dang, Chunyu Jing, Mengyuan Zhang, Xinru Li, Qing Xu, Changmin Hu, Yulong Li, Ying Zhang, Dezheng Wang, Delin Hong, Jianhua Jiang

Summary: We investigated the phenotypic values of panicle elongation length (PEL) in 353 rice accessions across six environments. We identified and validated three significant quantitative trait loci (QTL) associated with PEL, namely qPEL4, qPEL6, and qPEL9, of which qPEL9 is a novel QTL. The allele PEL9(GG) was found to increase the PEL and outcrossing rate in the female parents of hybrid rice, with its frequency gradually increasing with latitude in the Northern Hemisphere. These findings will help improve the PEL of female parents in hybrid rice.

Square-Root Higher-Order Topology in Rectangular-Lattice Acoustic Metamaterials

Shi-Qiao Wu, Zhi-Kang Lin, Zhan Xiong, Bin Jiang, Jian-Hua Jiang

Summary: In this study, square-root higher-order topological insulator phases were discovered in an acoustic metamaterial with a decorated rectangular lattice. The boundary-dependent topological edge and corner states in both the parent and square-root acoustic metamaterials were explored using acoustic pump-probe techniques. Various simulations were used to validate their higher-order topologies and spectral connections. This work not only confirms the existence of square-root higher-order topology in rectangular lattice systems experimentally but also paves the way for versatile higher-order topological phenomena in photonic, acoustic, and mechanical metamaterials.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the effects of SBI on intracranial HT and clinical outcomes after IVT in patients with AIS. The results showed that SBI had no significant impact on the incidence of HT and favorable clinical outcomes at 3 months. However, SBI remained an independent risk factor for non-excellent functional outcomes at 3 months.

Ultrahigh and Tunable Negative Photoresponse in Organic-Gated Carbon Nanotube Film Field-Effect Transistors

Wei Li, Shaoyuan Zhou, Xiaolu Xia, Ying Wang, Kaixuan Yang, Tong Hao, XinYue Zhang, Qi Yang, Zhenyu Ni, Jianhua Jiang, Jia Si, Fujun Zhang, Zhiyong Zhang

Summary: Controllable negative photoconductance (NPC) detectors based on organic-gated carbon nanotube field-effect transistors (OG-CNT FETs) are reported, with the strong influence of light-induced electrostatic doping on the nonconventional photoresponse demonstrated. The optimized OG-CNT FETs exhibit high responsivity of 72.6 A W-1 at 880 nm, along with improved response/recovery times of 7 and 5 ms. Reversible switching between NPC and positive photoconductance (PPC) is observed under the same light illumination, offering a new approach for achieving bidirectional photoresponses and paving the way for multifunctional optoelectronic systems.

Summary: This study developed a high-yielding two-line restorer line R998 with high blast resistance, good grain quality, and high combining ability. By establishing a library of dominant genic male sterile lines, six restorer lines resistant to rice blast were developed. In addition, nine medium indica rice varieties were bred using R998 and its six derived restorer lines. This study provides an idea for group breeding using dominant genic male sterile polymerized favorable genes.

Improve generalization of driving policy at signalized intersections with adversarial learning

Yangang Ren, Guojian Zhan, Liye Tang, Shengbo Eben Li, Jianhua Jiang, Keqiang Li, Jingliang Duan

Summary: This paper proposes an adversarial learning paradigm to enhance the intelligence and robustness of driving policy for signalized intersections with dense traffic flow. It introduces a static path planner to generate trackable candidate paths for different intersection topologies and builds a constrained optimal control problem considering the uncertainty of the driving environment. Adversarial policy gradient is used to solve the problem by introducing disturbances while the driving policy learns to handle the situation through competition. Simulation results show that the trained policy can handle signal lights flexibly and achieve smooth and efficient passing with a humanoid paradigm, while APG greatly improves the resistance to abnormal behaviors, ensuring a high level of safety for autonomous vehicles.
