Italy is the leading European rice producer, and transitioning to organic farming could contribute to environmental protection, economic sustainability, consumer safety, and climate mitigation. The study proposes advice for improving control and certification in the organic rice sector.
Italy is the leading European rice producer. The transition to organic farming of rice farms could represent a solution for environmental protection, as well as for their economic sustainability, consumer safety, and as a measure of climate mitigation. However, there are currently several weaknesses in the control and certification system. The objective of the current study was to propose advice for improving the control and certification scheme in the organic rice sector. The goal was achieved by adopting a qualitative methodology based on participant observation at stakeholder meetings and community-led workshops, and information collected in focus groups and deep interviews with relevant local actors. The findings show that there are some solutions to mitigate the weakness of the Italian certification scheme. The study also contributes to improving the Italian organic rice sector by highlighting that a revision of procedures and sanctions alone is not enough, and that an ethical and cultural change is also needed along the whole value chain.

Fishery management in a marine protected area with compliance gaps: Socio-economic and biological insights as a first step on the path of sustainability

Summary: Overfishing is a major impact on the marine environment, and multiple-use Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) are seen as a useful tool for conservation and sustainable resource exploitation. However, ensuring effective protection on the ground is challenging, as demonstrated by the analysis of a sea urchin fishery in an Italian MPA. The study reveals that non-compliance with regulations by stakeholders is a key factor in the unsustainable management of the fishery, leading to a decline in sea urchin populations and the prevalence of illegal fishing activities.

Summary: This paper discusses the implementation of a participatory approach in an agricultural research project aimed at transitioning towards organic farming in the Italian rice district. The study explores the relationships between scientists and stakeholders, highlighting the scientists' lack of knowledge and skills, negative attitudes towards participatory research, and their tendency to retain decision-making power. Through in-depth analysis of a case study, the paper emphasizes the importance of researchers and their attitudes in participatory agricultural research.

Summary: This research project in an Italian public school aimed to assess parents' willingness to participate in food procurement decisions, their accuracy in predicting children's food choices at school lunch, and their support for sustainable food choices. Results suggest that delegating the school's role in the food arena to parents may not be ideal.

Summary: Short food supply chains (SFSCs) are direct approaches connecting consumers with producers, but face challenges in scaling up. This study developed a decision-making tool to assess the sustainability of SFSCs and identify the most appropriate business model. The framework consisted of 47 indicators validated through participatory analysis and highlighted the importance of adaptability to territorial contexts and needs.

Summary: This study aims to propose a method to deduce farms' innovation needs using economic and financial results of the Italian FADN survey, and to support the macro objectives of European Rural Development Policy. By calculating indicators for homogeneous groups of farms, critical farm issues related to innovation needs have been highlighted. Measures of the Rural Development Programs have been proposed for each farm critical issue as an example of application.
