Summary: Benzo[a]pyrene (B[a]P) is a representative polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) that is commonly found in the environment and human surroundings. It has been shown to have toxic effects on DNA, reproduction, neurology, and development. The metabolism of B[a]P is mediated by cytochrome P450 (CYP P450) and its polymorphism determines the sensitivity to B[a]P. Additionally, B[a]P may facilitate the replication of viruses.

Summary: In this study, CeO2-based porous carbonaceous frameworks (CeO2 PCFs) were used as antioxidant nanozymes to scavenge reactive oxygen species and absorb benzo[a]pyrene. CeO2 PCFs exhibited excellent superoxide dismutase-like and catalase-like activity, effectively eliminating superoxide radical, hydroxyl radical, and hydrogen peroxide. The 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) free radical scavenging assay confirmed the free radical scavenging ability of CeO2 PCFs. Furthermore, CeO2 PCFs with large surface area and porous structure efficiently adsorbed benzo[a]pyrene. The designed CeO2 PCFs can serve as new antioxidant nanozymes for scavenging reactive oxygen species and adsorbing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs).

Summary: The majority of experimental studies on the effects of pollutants on meiofauna have been conducted in closed systems, with the current study revealing that single PAHs impact meiobenthic nematodes similarly in closed or open systems, with higher toxicity observed for benzo[a]pyrene. Closed systems contaminated with PAHs became organically enriched, resulting in changes in the types and numbers of deposit feeders. The responses of taxa to hydrocarbons in open systems were influenced by caudal morphology, with the effects of PAHs mixtures being both additive and synergistic. Based on this study, open systems are preferred over closed systems for more accurate research outcomes.

Summary: BaP exposure during the prepubertal period negatively impacted the reproductive parameters in adult male rats, leading to compromised copulatory behavior, reduced sperm quality and quantity, and histopathological changes in testicular tissue. A comprehensive risk assessment of prepubertal BaP exposure is necessary to understand its long-term effects on male reproductive health.

Summary: This study investigates the mechanisms of long noncoding RNA (lncRNA) H19 binding to S-adenosylhomocysteine hydrolase (SAHH) and how it regulates DNA damage caused by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The results show that urinary levels of 1-hydroxypyrene (1-OHP) are positively associated with blood H19 RNA expression but inversely correlated with plasma SAHH activity in coke oven workers. Furthermore, the study reveals that H19 binding to SAHH exaggerates DNMT1 expression and activity, leading to increased oxidative DNA damage and cell cycle arrest.

Summary: In this study, a BaP-degrading strain Pannonibacter sp. JPA3 was isolated from oil well production water, which could remove 80% of BaP at an initial concentration of 100 mg L-1 after 35 days of culture. The metabolites BaP-4,5-dihydrodiol, BaP-4,5-epoxide, 5-hydroxychrysene, and 2-hydroxy-1-naphthoic acid were identified in the biodegradation process. A dioxygenase model was built and molecular docking was performed to investigate the interaction mechanism between BaP and dioxygenase. A hypothesis for the progressive degradation mechanism of BaP by this strain was proposed based on the identification of downstream metabolites. In conclusion, this study provided an efficient BaP degrader and a comprehensive reference for the study of degradation mechanisms at the molecular level.

The potential protective effects of cumulus cells on oocytes and the efficient DNA damage repair system of oocytes compared to cumulus and sperm cells may explain the lack of additive effect observed in rat oocytes.

Summary: Studies on anurans have been conducted for over 40 years to evaluate the adverse effects of benzo(alpha)pyrene (B alpha P), showing genotoxic, hepatotoxic, and immunotoxic effects. This study aimed to assess whether the route of administration of B alpha P influences its effects on hepatic biomarkers, with morphological biomarkers being more significantly affected than biochemical ones. The exposure pathway and time both modulate the effects of B alpha P on hepatic biomarkers in anurans.

Summary: This study determined the accumulation of benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) in road dust on different types of roads in Moscow for the first time and found that the BaP content was significantly higher than in surrounding background soils. Large roads and parking lots in courtyards were the most polluted areas, and the parameters of street canyons (such as width and height) also influenced the accumulation of BaP. Oral ingestion was identified as the main pathway for BaP exposure, and adults faced the highest carcinogenic risk in courtyard areas in the city center.

Summary: The Arctic region is facing contamination from long-range pollution and local human activities. Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) are used as environmental indicators for emission, transport, and deposition processes. Research conducted in the Arctic surface snow in Ny-Ålesund, Svalbard from October 2018 to May 2019 shows that long-range inputs of PAHs mainly occur in winter, while the most abundant analyte retene exhibits opposite seasonal trends.

Summary: In this study, a human physiologically based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) model of diethyl phthalate (DEP) was developed to assess its toxicity. The model considers the distribution and metabolism of DEP and its active metabolite monoethyl phthalate (MEP) in different tissue compartments. Sensitivity analysis and Bayesian Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) simulations were performed to evaluate the uncertainty and variability of the model parameters. The results suggest that dermal absorption is an important route of exposure to DEP in the environment.

Summary: This study investigates the feasibility and mechanisms of a chemical-free nanobubble-based AOP for treating organic micropollutants in water. The results show that the oxygen nanobubble AOP has a significantly higher removal efficiency compared to air and nitrogen nanobubbles. The treatment performance is not affected by pH and the presence of ions. Higher initial concentrations of the micropollutant lead to slower treatment processes, but similar removal performance is achieved in the end. The presence of organic matter reduces the removal rate of the micropollutant. The results have practical feasibility for water and wastewater treatment.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of biochar on methylmercury (MeHg) accumulation in rice. The results show that biochar reduces MeHg levels in paddy soils by decreasing bioavailable Hg and microbial Hg methylation. Additionally, biochar decreases the uptake and translocation of MeHg in rice plants, resulting in a reduction of MeHg accumulation in rice grains.

Summary: This study investigates the protein targets and protein-ligand interactions related to PAH contamination in crop xylem sap using computational tools. The results show that phenanthrene has a more pronounced effect on the xylem sap proteins of maize and wheat, with maize DEPs associated with lipid biosynthesis and wheat DEPs exhibiting an increase in ABC transporters. This study provides insights into the regulation and movement of PAHs within plant xylem.

The results showed that both natural gas consumption and life-cycle carbon emissions have been increasing since 2017. Summary: The synergistic effects of trace sulfadiazine and cast-iron corrosion scales on the formation of disinfection by-products in drinking water distribution systems were investigated. The presence of magnetite resulted in increased concentrations of DBPs due to the higher microbial activity and enhanced microbial extracellular electron transport pathway. The study highlights the importance of considering trace antibiotics pollution and corrosion scales in water sources for DBP control.

Summary: This study aims to explore the effects of thiencarbazone-methyl center dot isoxaflutole on soil microflora and the potential mitigation mechanisms to bacterial communities. It was found that increasing the application of thiencarbazone-methyl center dot isoxaflutole resulted in increased stress on soil bacterial community structure and diversity. Increasing soil pH was recognized as a key factor in improving the diversity and structure of soil microflora. Supplemental use of nitrapyrin or modified attapulgite can increase soil pH and improve bacterial diversity.
