The common aspects and processes influencing dissipation kinetics of pesticides are determinants of their fate in the environment. Nowadays, with increasing population, the demand for food and fodder crops has also increased. With the development in science and technology, the methods of controlling pests may improve, but the major role played by the environment cannot be altered, i.e. the environmental factors, climatic conditions, and geology of areas under cultivation. Plants play a crucial role in the dissipation kinetics, as they may vary in species and characteristics. Differences in physico-chemical properties, such as formulation, bioavailability, and efficacy of the pesticide, may result in variable dissipation patterns even under the same environmental conditions. While modelling the dissipation kinetics for any specific pesticide applied to any specific crop, each factor must be considered. This review focusses on the variability observed across common factors, i.e. environmental aspects, plant-associated facts, and observed characteristics of chemical substances, influencing pesticide dissipation.

Mingqi Zhao, Miao Wang, Xiaoguang Zhang, Yongan Zhu, Jing Cao, Yongxin She, Zhen Cao, Guangyue Li, Jing Wang, A. M. Abd El-Aty

Summary: Excessive use of pesticides poses a serious threat to the environment and human health. Rapid detection of pesticide residues in food is crucial, and recognition elements play a key role in sensors and testing methods. Improper recognition elements can lead to method defects. Molecular biological techniques provide an effective strategy for addressing these challenges. This review summarizes the molecular biological methods for five specific recognition elements and discusses their application in conjunction with biosensors and immunoassays.

Predicting the formation of 2-amino-3-methyl-imidazole[4,5-f]quinoline (IQ) in the Maillard reaction model system under various reaction conditions

Haijie Wang, Feng He, Hongjun He, Pengfei Du, Yaobo Liu, Weiting Wang, Shoujing Wang, Yanli Ma, Xiaoran Chu, Yuanshang Wang, Xiaoyi Mu, A. M. Abd El-Aty

Summary: In this study, the formation mechanism of IQ in the Maillard reaction model system was investigated under various reaction conditions. The results showed that different conditions significantly affected the precursors, reactive carbonyl species, and IQ formation. A partial least squares (PLS) prediction model was constructed to explore the relationship between IQ and various conditions, and it was found that temperature played a significant role in the formation of IQ during the Maillard reaction. Crotonaldehyde was identified as a vital factor in IQ formation. This research provides insights for reducing the formation of IQ in meat products and improving their safety for human consumption.

Structure and genetic regulation of starch formation in sorghum (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench) endosperm: A review

Xuemin Kang, Wei Gao, Bo Cui, A. M. Abd El-Aty

Summary: This review focuses on the structure and genetic regulation of starch formation in sorghum endosperm, which is an important cereal crop. Starch synthesis in sorghum endosperm is regulated by complex genetic and environmental factors. Recent research has identified genes involved in starch synthesis regulation, and environmental factors like temperature and water availability can also affect the structure and properties of sorghum starch. Understanding the structure and genetic regulation of starch formation in sorghum endosperm can have implications for improving sorghum-based products.

Effect of water-retention agents on Scomberomorus niphonius surimi after repeated freeze-thaw cycles: low-field NMR and MRI studies

Shan Sun, Zhuyi Lin, Shasha Cheng, A. M. Abd El-Aty, Mingqian Tan

Summary: Repeated freeze-thaw cycles can cause changes in the water distribution, physicochemical characteristics, and microstructure of Scomberomorus niphonius surimi. Water retention agents (phosphate and trehalose) were found to decrease water loss and improve surimi quality during these cycles. The combination of low-field nuclear magnetic resonance (LF-NMR) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) analysis provided important insights into the effects of water retention agents on surimi after freeze-thaw cycles.

Adipokine gremlin-1 promotes hepatic steatosis via upregulation of ER stress by suppressing autophagy-mediated signaling

Sung Woo Choi, Heeseung Oh, Seung Yeon Park, Wonjun Cho, A. M. Abd El-Aty, Ahmet Hacimuftuoglu, Ji Hoon Jeong, Tae Woo Jung

Summary: Gremlin-1 (GR1) is a novel adipokine that is highly expressed in human adipocytes and has been shown to inhibit the BMP2/4-TGFβ signaling pathway, leading to insulin resistance in skeletal muscle, adipocytes, and hepatocytes. This study investigated the effect of GR1 on hepatic lipid metabolism and found that it promotes hepatic ER stress, lipid accumulation, and lipogenesis, while reducing autophagy. Targeting GR1 could be a potential therapeutic approach for metabolic diseases, including MAFLD.

BSA-carbon dots a promising off-on fluorescence probe for detecting glyphosate residues in agricultural products

Qian Wang, Miao Wang, Lufei Zheng, Yongxin She, Jing Wang, Minghong Jia, A. M. Abd El-Aty

Summary: The widespread use of glyphosate in agriculture raises concerns about its impact on agricultural product quality and safety. In this study, a facile fluorescence probe was developed for the fast and simple detection of glyphosate. The probe operated by producing an off-on fluorescent signal, with the presence of glyphosate restoring the fluorescence. The developed method showed good selectivity for glyphosate with a detection limit of 0.05 μg/mL.
