Children are vulnerable to heavy metal contamination through consumption of candies and chocolates. Considering this representative samples (69) of candies and chocolates based on cocoa, milk and sugar were analyzed for selected heavy metals by means of flame atomic absorption spectrometry. The average concentration of Zn, Pb, Ni, and Cd was found to be 2.52 +/- 2.49, 2.0 +/- 1.20, 0.84 +/- 1.35, and 0.17 +/- 0.22 mu g/g respectively. Results indicate that cocoa-based candies have higher metal content than milk-or sugar-based candies. The daily dietary intake of metals for children eating candies and chocolates was also calculated, and results indicated highest intake of Pb and Zn followed by Ni, Cd, and Cu. Comparison of the current study results with other studies around the globe shows that the heavy metal content in candies and chocolates is lower in India than reported elsewhere. However, to reduce the further dietary exposure of heavy metals through candies and chocolates, their content should be monitored regularly and particularly for Pb as children are highly susceptible to its toxicity.

Optimization of Swiss blue dye removal by cotton boll activated carbon: response surface methodological approach

Rekha Rani, Summaiya Tasmeem, Anju Malik, Vinod Kumar Garg, Lakhvinder Singh, Sanju Bala Dhull

Summary: The study successfully utilized Cotton boll activated carbon (CBAC) for Swiss blue (SB) decolorization from simulated wastewater. The adsorption process followed Langmuir adsorption isotherm with highest adsorption capability of 52.631 mg g(-1) and pseudo second order (PSO) kinetic model. Response surface methodology (RSM) based on Box-Behnken design (BBD) was effective in modeling and optimizing the factors for SB removal.

A comprehensive physico-chemical quality and heavy metal health risk assessment study for phreatic water sources in Narora Atomic Power Station region, Narora, India

Manbir Singh, V. K. Garg

Summary: This investigation studied the water quality and distribution of heavy metals in groundwater samples collected near the Narora Atomic Power Station in India. Some water quality parameters exceeded the limits prescribed by Indian standards, and the concentrations of certain heavy metals exceeded the limits for safe drinking water. However, the overall health risk assessment values were below the threshold for significant risk.

Sustainable treatment and nutrient recovery from leafy waste through vermicomposting

Monika Mago, Renuka Gupta, Anoop Yadav, Vinod Kumar Garg

Summary: This study evaluated the vermicomposting potential of two cruciferous vegetables' residual biomasses under laboratory conditions. The results showed that vermicomposting led to a decrease in pH and Total Organic Carbon, an increase in Electrical Conductivity and ash content. Nutrient levels such as Total Kjeldahl Nitrogen, Total Available Phosphorus, and Total Potassium also increased. The FT-IR spectra indicated decomposition of organic compounds and the stability of the vermicompost. Additionally, the cauliflower residual biomass exhibited better decomposition efficiency compared to the cabbage residual biomass.

Sequestration of heavy metal ions from multi-metal simulated wastewater systems using processed agricultural biomass

Manjeet Bansal, Rajni Garg, V. K. Garg, Rishav Garg, Diwan Singh

Summary: The presence of multiple metals in industrial effluents can influence the removal of each metal during adsorptive treatment. This study reveals an antagonistic effect on the removal of a particular metal ion if other metal ions are present in the effluent. Although a higher concentration of one metal ion increases its removal, the presence of other ions affects the uptake of individual ions.

Two-step activated carbon cloth enhances microbial interactions and methane production during anaerobic digestion of municipal sludge

Vikas Kumar, Brandon Kieft, Parmila Devi, Steven J. Hallam, Cigdem Eskicioglu

Summary: This study investigated the effects of two-step activated carbon cloth on syntrophic microbial associations during anaerobic digestion of municipal sludge. The results showed that activated carbon cloth enhanced methane yield and reduced the lag phase, attributed to its increased electron transfer and methane production kinetics. Additionally, activated carbon cloth promoted the adherence of methane-producing microorganisms, providing a stable environment for syntrophic energy metabolism.

Distribution and concentration pathway of particulate pollution during pandemic-induced lockdown in metropolitan cities in India

A. Anand, V. K. Garg, A. Agrawal, S. Mangla, A. Pathak

Summary: This study collected daily particulate matter (PM10 and PM2.5) data from the National Air Quality Monitoring stations in major metropolitan cities in India to characterize pollutant dispersal. The data were analyzed for three time periods: pre-lockdown, during lockdown, and post-lockdown. Statistical distributions, aerosol optical thickness, and back trajectories were assessed. The results showed a decline in particulate pollution during lockdown, with Delhi and Kolkata experiencing the highest reductions. The study suggests that statistical distribution analysis and pollution models can help in studying dispersal and developing pollution abatement policies, while incorporating remote sensing can enhance knowledge about air parcel origin and movement.

Occurrence, distribution, and toxicity assessment of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in biochar, biocrude, and biogas obtained from pyrolysis of agricultural residues

Parmila Devi, Ajay K. Dalai

Summary: The occurrence, distribution, and toxicity of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were investigated in pyrolysis streams (biochar, biocrude, and biogas) of three agricultural residues at pyrolysis temperatures of 400-800 degrees C. The formation of PAHs increased in a narrow temperature range (500-600 degrees C) due to temperature-induced reactions. Low molecular weight PAHs dominated in all product streams, while high molecular weight PAHs were found in very low concentrations. Leaching studies revealed that biochars produced at lower temperatures were more prone to leaching, while high temperature pyrolyzed biochar prevented the leaching of PAHs due to the presence of a hydrophobic carbonized matrix. The low leaching potential, low toxic equivalency, and permissible total PAHs values in biochar derived from all three feedstocks ensure ecological safety and warrant broader application.

Sustainable utilization and treatment of barnyard grass (Echinochloa crus-galli) weed biomass using vermitechnology

Renuka Gupta, Monika Mago, Vinod Kumar Garg

Summary: This research explores the use of vermicomposting technology to sustainable manage Barnyard grass, a common rice weed. By vermicomposting a mixture of Barnyard grass biomass and cow dung at different ratios, it was found that higher percentage of Barnyard grass hindered the growth of earthworms. The final vermicomposts showed good nutrient content and maturity, effectively decomposing the weed biomass. This study suggests that vermicomposting can convert Barnyard grass into nutrient-rich manure, providing a cost-effective and environmentally sustainable method for weed management.
