Summary: This study examined hearing thresholds in senior adults aged 80 years and older and compared the results with the current ISO 7029 reference values. The findings revealed that both male and female participants in the study had worse hearing thresholds than expected based on the ISO reference values. Given the significant impact on individuals and society, this is a problem that requires attention.

Summary: A study found that cognitive impairment is associated with all-cause mortality in hemodialysis patients, especially in the executive and memory cognitive domains. These findings suggest that detecting impairments in these cognitive domains may help in the early identification of hemodialysis patients at risk of death.

Summary: Depression is common among community-dwelling older adults, but remains undertreated due to a lack of acceptable and available treatments. Lay health providers can offer psychosocial interventions for older adults, and we developed a streamlined Behavioural Activation intervention to be delivered by older adult volunteers and propose to compare its effectiveness to that of clinician-delivered behavioural activation.

Summary: Excessive CO2 emissions are negatively impacting sustainable urban development. Low-carbon construction in neighborhoods is crucial for promoting sustainable cities. This study develops a carbon accounting methodology and an efficiency assessment model to measure carbon emission characteristics and reduction potential at the neighborhood level. Findings show significant heterogeneity in carbon emission efficiency among neighborhoods, with a majority being ineffective due to underutilized resource investments. Adopting adaptive renewal strategies can effectively promote the construction of low-carbon neighborhoods.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence and factors associated with cognitive and physical dysfunction in older diabetic people. The study found that both cognitive and physical function impairment were common in older diabetic patients, and their relevant factors included older age and lower estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR). It was recommended to integrate additional assessment of cognitive and physical functions into routine clinical process for older individuals with diabetes.

Summary: Background ad hoc approaches are used to create composite indexes of intrinsic capacity (IC) based on five domains recommended by the World Health Organization for healthy ageing. We examined how combinations of domain-specific measures determine measurement performances of composite IC indexes. Results showed that among Singaporean older adults, cognition, sensory, and locomotion are predominant IC domains. A multi-domain IC index performs better with more domain measures, but a minimalist 3-domain index performs just as robustly as a 4- or 5-domain index.

Summary: This study aims to explore the relationship between the enhanced gait variability index (EGVI) and cognitive decline, comparing it with gait speed. The results show that EGVI significantly contributes to the performance in the Visuospatial and Delayed Memory domains, while gait speed has a significant impact on the Attention domain. The study suggests that EGVI may serve as a solution for measuring or tracking the relationship between gait variability and cognitive changes.

Summary: The study found that low hand grip strength and asymmetry were associated with declining cognitive function and functional mobility in older adults. Low hand grip strength was independently associated with lower functional mobility and cognitive function, as well as immediate and delayed memory. The combination of low hand grip strength and asymmetry was associated with poorer language scores. However, the associations with cognitive and physical functions were primarily driven by grip strength rather than asymmetry.

Summary: Cognitive frailty is associated with increased risk of dementia and adverse health outcomes. This study aims to investigate the risk factors for incident cognitive frailty. The results of the analysis using LASSO multivariable logistic regression models showed that eye problems and low HDL-cholesterol were risk factors for cognitive frailty transition, while higher levels of education and participation in cognitive stimulating activities were protective factors.
