Laboratory exposure experiments were performed on the marine coastal zooplankton species Pseudodiaptomus marinus-a keystone species of vast Atlantic and Pacific marine ecosystems, tracing the accumulation of three polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs): phenanthrene, anthracene and pyrene. The experiment was designed to study the bioconcentration of PAHs in phytoplankton (Rhodomonas baltica) and accumulation in copepods (P. marinus), through two different pathways: food and water uptake. For this purpose, water and organism subsamples were collected, ASE (accelerated solvent extraction) extracted, and analyzed for PAHs by GC/MS technique. As a result, experimental bioconcentration (BCF) and bioaccumulation (BAF) factors which showed a significant correlation with the octanol-water partition coefficient (K-ow) were presented for P. marinus. The active feeding route of exposure showed no significant differences versus passive uptake, highlighting the importance of dietary exposure as a major pathway for POPs accumulation in zooplankton; in particular for those which cannot be metabolized.

Responses of the copepod Eurytemora affinis to trace metal exposure: A candidate for sentinel to marine sediment resuspension effects

Shagnika Das, Baghdad Ouddane, Sami Souissi

Summary: Our study reveals the ability of Eurytemora affinis to respond to different environmental factors. Exposure to sediment from a polluted site leads to a decrease in early larval stages, disrupted sex ratio, and an increase in ovigerous females. Additionally, E. affinis can accumulate various heavy metals, with the highest accumulation observed for dissolved trace metals.

55 xenobiotic organic compounds in Tripoli landfill-Lebanon leachate and their fluxes to the Abou Ali River and Mediterranean Sea

Ahmad Moustafa, Mariam Hamzeh, Moomen Baroudi, Baghdad Ouddane, Sopheak Net

Summary: Pollution generated from landfill solid wastes is a significant threat to the environment. Landfill leachate, containing various toxic pollutants, poses the most dangerous issue in landfills. This study evaluates the seasonal variation of xenobiotic organic compounds in the leachate from a municipal landfill in Tripoli, Lebanon and estimates the flux of pollutants to nearby bodies of water. High levels of PAEs, BPs, PCBs, and PAHs were found in the leachate samples. The fluxes of pollutants to the Abou Ali River and Mediterranean Sea were determined.

Bioaccumulation of trace metal elements and biomarker responses in caged juvenile flounder at a polluted site: Effects of fish density and time exposure

Mamadou Diop, Jerome Couteau, Anne Bado-Nilles, Eric Tavernier, Baghdad Ouddane, Jeremy Denis, Gwendoline Duong, Francois Gevaert, Sebastien Monchy, Jean Laroche, Rachid Amara

Summary: This study examines the impact of fish density and exposure duration on the bioaccumulation of trace metal elements (TME) and biomarker responses. The results show that fish density has no effect on TME accumulation in the muscle, but exposure duration significantly affects TME levels. We suggest that a 15-day exposure period with low fish density is sufficient for assessing TME pollution in the field.

Beached microplastics at the Bahia Blanca Estuary (Argentina): Plastic pellets as potential vectors of environmental pollution by POPs

Andres H. Arias, Guadalupe Alvarez, Karla Pozo, Petra Pribylova, Jana Klanova, Lucas S. Rodriguez Pirani, A. Lorena Picone, Monica Alvarez, Norma Tombesi

Summary: Microplastics (MPs) were sampled from a highly anthropised estuary's coastal areas to assess their distribution in coastal sediments and their potential role as pollution vectors. The average MP density was 1693 +/- 2315 MPs/kg, with accumulation mainly in high tide and storm berm areas of the beach. Various analysis techniques revealed spatial variation in MPs pollution and the presence of sorbed chemicals on plastic pellets. This highlights the environmental concerns and their significance as indicators of chemical exposure.

Trace metals exposure in three different coastal compartments show specific morphological and reproductive traits across generations in a sentinel copepod

Shagnika Das, Anissa Souissi, Baghdad Ouddane, Jiang-Shiou Hwang, Sami Souissi

Summary: This study investigates the effects of contaminants from different environmental compartments on the morphology and reproduction of the copepod Eurytemora affinis. The results show that dissolved exposures had the lowest survival rate in the first generation, while resuspended sediment exposures were more sensitive in the second generation. Different parameters were sensitive to different exposures at the individual level. The number of lipid droplets was positively correlated with trace metal bioaccumulation and negatively correlated with survival and clutch size. This study provides valuable markers for risk assessment and fish feed studies.
