Environmental contextThe concentration of a free metal cation has proved to be a useful predictor of metal bioaccumulation and toxicity, as represented by the free ion activity and biotic ligand models. However, under certain circumstances, metal complexes have been shown to contribute to metal bioavailability. In the current mini-review, we summarise the studies where the classic models fail and organise them into categories based on the different uptake pathways and kinetic processes. Our goal is to define the limits within which currently used models such as the biotic ligand model (BLM) can be applied with confidence, and to identify how these models might be expanded. AbstractNumerous data from studies over the past 30 years have shown that metal uptake and toxicity are often best predicted by the concentrations of free metal cations, which has led to the development of the largely successful free-ion activity model (FIAM) and biotic ligand model (BLM). Nonetheless, some exceptions to these classical models, showing enhanced metal bioavailability in the presence of metal complexes, have also been documented, although it is not yet fully understood to what extent these exceptions can or should be generalised. Only a few studies have specifically measured the bioaccumulation or toxicity of metal complexes while carefully measuring or controlling metal speciation. Fewer still have verified the fundamental assumptions of the classical models, especially when dealing with metal complexes. In the current paper, we have summarised the exceptions to classical models and categorised them into five groups based on the fundamental uptake pathways and kinetic processes. Our aim is to summarise the mechanisms involved in the interaction of metal complexes with organisms and to improve the predictive capability of the classic models when dealing with complexes.

Quantification and Characterization of Ti-, Ce-, and Ag-Nanoparticles in Global Surface Waters and Precipitation

Agil Azimzada, Ibrahim Jreije, Madjid Hadioui, Phil Shaw, Jeffrey M. Farner, Kevin J. Wilkinson

Summary: The study measured NP concentrations and sizes for Ti-, Ce-, and Ag-containing NPs in global surface waters and precipitation samples, providing insights into their compositions and origins. Total Ti- and Ce-NP concentrations were often found to be within 10(4) to 10(7) NP mL(-1), while Ag NPs exhibited sporadic occurrences with low concentrations up to 10(5) NP mL(-1). The observed NP levels so far do not seem to exceed toxicity thresholds for the environment or human health.

Mixtures of rare earth elements show antagonistic interactions in Chlamydomonas reinhardtii

Elise Morel, Lei Cui, William Zerges, Kevin J. Wilkinson

Summary: Research showed that rare earth elements have common biological effects on microalgae under low concentrations and mixed conditions, affecting functions like protein processing in the endoplasmic reticulum and phosphate transport. When applied as a mixture, the elements may compete with each other for bio-uptake, resulting in antagonistic effects. These findings suggest that regulating rare earth elements based on data from single metal exposures may be overly cautious.

The Influence of Silver Nanoparticle Form on the Toxicity in Freshwater Mussels

Joelle Auclair, Caroline Peyrot, Kevin J. Wilkinson, Francois Gagne

Summary: This study examined the toxicity of different structures (sphere, cube, and prism) of silver nanomaterials (nAg) in Dreissena bugensis mussels. The results showed that spheric and prismatic nAg significantly decreased viscosity in the mussels, while cubic nAg reduced protein aggregation in the cytoplasm. Additionally, the activity of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) was more strongly decreased by prismatic nAg compared to cubic and spheric nAg. It was concluded that the geometries of nanoparticles could influence their toxicity in aquatic organisms.

Investigation on the Toxicity of Nanoparticle Mixture in Rainbow Trout Juveniles

Joelle Auclair, Patrice Turcotte, Christian Gagnon, Caroline Peyrot, Kevin James Wilkinson, Francois Gagne

Summary: The study examined the sub-lethal toxicity of low concentrations of selected nanoparticles alone and in mixtures in juvenile trout. The results showed that the nanoparticles were bioavailable for fish, with different levels of toxicity for different nanoparticles and antagonistic effects in the mixtures. In conclusion, the bioavailability and toxicity of these nanoparticles are influenced by mixtures of nanoparticles, which is likely to occur in contaminated environments.

Analysis of Silver Nanoparticles in Ground Beef by Single Particle Inductively Coupled PlasmaMass Spectrometry (SP-ICP-MS)

Alexandre Chalifoux, Madjid Hadioui, Nesrine Amiri, Kevin J. J. Wilkinson

Summary: Regulation and characterization of nanomaterials in foods are of interest due to potential risks and increasing applications in the food industry. Lack of standardized extraction procedures for nanoparticles limits regulation efforts. In this study, enzymatic- and alkaline-based hydrolysis approaches were optimized for extracting 40 nm Ag NPs from a fatty beef matrix. Single particle ICP-MS was used for characterization. Fast sample processing and minimal NP losses were achieved through ultrasonication and optimization of enzymes/chemicals, surfactants, and sonication. The alkaline approach showed higher recoveries (>90%), but lower stability compared to enzymatic digestion using pork pancreatin and lipase (approx. 60% recovery). Enzymatic extraction had lower method detection limits (MDL) of 4.8 x 10(6) particles g(-1) and a size detection limit (SDL) of 10.9 nm, while alkaline hydrolysis had an MDL of 5.7 x 10(7) particles g(-1) and an SDL of 10.5 nm.

Form-Dependent Toxicity of Silver Nanomaterials in Rainbow Trout Gills

Joelle Auclair, Patrice Turcotte, Christian Gagnon, Caroline Peyrot, Kevin James Wilkinson, Francois Gagne

Summary: The toxicity of different forms of silver nanoparticles (nAg) in juvenile rainbow trout was compared in this study. It was found that dissolved Ag had the highest uptake and distribution in the fish gills, followed by spherical, cubic, and prismatic nAg. Dissolution of nAg was observed in all forms, with prismatic nAg releasing higher levels of Ag in the protein pool. Cubic nAg had a higher aggregation tendency compared to other forms. Lipid peroxidation was closely related to protein aggregation and viscosity. Biomarkers indicated changes in lipid/oxidative stress and genotoxicity, which were associated with protein aggregation loss and inflammation (NO2 levels), respectively. In general, the effects were observed in all forms of nAg, with prismatic nAg showing higher toxicity than spherical and cubic nAg. The strong relationship between genotoxicity and inflammation response suggests the involvement of the immune system in the observed responses of juvenile fish gills.

Effect of nanopesticides (azoxystrobin and bifenthrin) on the phenolic content and metabolic profiles of strawberries (Fragaria x ananassa)

Peiying Wang, Valerie Gravel, Vinicius Bueno, Juliana A. Galhardi, Alexandra Roginski, Subhasis Ghoshal, Kevin J. Wilkinson, Stephane Bayen

Summary: This study compared the impact of two different types of nanocarriers (Allosperse and SiO2 nanoparticles) loaded with two active ingredients (azoxystrobin and bifenthrin) on the phenolic contents and metabolic profiles of strawberries. The results showed slight decreases in total phenolic content and pelargonidin 3-glucoside content, but increases in gallic acid, quercetin, and kaempferol levels in strawberries treated with the nanoencapsulated pesticides. Principal component analysis identified the effects of nanocarriers on metabolites and phenolic profiles. Overall, while the effects of nanopesticides on strawberry plants were not obvious, there were significant molecular-level changes in plant health and fruit quality. Further research is needed to assess the impact of diverse nanopesticides on other plant metabolites.
