This article presents a dual-polarized linear array antenna design based on the Huygens equivalence principle, and validates its performance in beam scanning through measured results. The proposed antenna achieves high gains and low sidelobe levels within certain frequency bands and scanning ranges, demonstrating good agreement between measured and simulated results.
Focused aperture (FA) antenna with phase center of its feeder moving along the focal plane or focal arc is an effective and low-cost approach for beam scanning. Dual polarization is always desired in the communication system. In this article, a dual-polarized linear array with overlapping handover of subarray (OHSA) is proposed to produce continuous displacement of virtual point source on the basis of the Huygens equivalence principle. As the feeder of an FA antenna, the proposed OHSA not only enables continuous beam scanning electronically but also reduces the profile of the antenna. To validate the proposed scheme, a dual-polarized electronic beam-scanning transmitarray antenna with the profile of 3.46 lambda(0) is designed and measured. At the designed frequency 5.5 GHz, for both x- and y-polarizations, the measured gains are higher than 20.9 dBi, and the sidelobe levels (SLLs) are lower than -16 dB; within the bandwidth of 5.3 to 5.9 GHz and the scanning range of +/- 30 degrees, the gains are higher than 16 dBi, and the SLLs are lower than -8 dB. The isolation between dual-polarizations in the broadside radiation is higher than 29 dB. The back lobe is lower than -15 dB. The measured results are in reasonable agreement with the simulated ones.

Huiqin Jiang, Yinhua Yu, Miao-Miao Chen, Wei Huang

Summary: This study establishes a vulnerability index to climate change based on the VSD framework, finding that climate change vulnerability in China has decreased over time, with the western region more vulnerable than the eastern region. Driving factors include forest coverage, the urban-rural income gap, and information technology.

1-D Wide-Angle Beam-Scanning Linear Phased Array With Enhanced Gain by Using 3-D Printed Dielectric Slab Superstrate

Yin-Hua Yu, Zhi-Yuan Zong, Wen Wu, Qiaoyu Chen, Min Wang, Da-Gang Fang

Summary: A 1-D wide-angle beam-scanning linear phased array using dielectric slab superstrate (DSS) to enhance gain is presented. The DSS is optimized to meet the requirements of beam widths in both scanning and orthogonal planes, leading to 3.5 dB gain enhancement in the scanning range and low side-lobe levels.

Qiaoyu Chen, Jin-Dong Zhang, Wen Wu, Da-Gang Fang

Summary: This article proposes a single-sideband time-modulated phased array (STMPA) design with low sideband level (SBL) for wide-bandwidth signals. The design utilizes time-modulated pulses with stepped waveforms to improve STMPA performance. The optimization of waveforms is discussed, considering practical restrictions. The proposed design achieves low SBLs and reduces aliasing effects for wideband signals.

A Transmitarray Illuminated by a Pencil Beam Source to Obtain Conical Beam With Fixed Linear Polarization and Circular Polarization

Junxiang Yang, Shi-Shan Qi, Yin-Hua Yu, Wen Wu, Da-Gang Fang

Summary: The fixed linear-polarized conical beam transmitarray is superior to the radially linear-polarized conical beam antenna in certain applications. This paper presents a method to obtain conical beams with fixed linear polarization (FLP) and circular polarization (CP) using a pencil beam source to illuminate a transmitarray. The transmitarray elements are distributed on rings for good circumferential symmetry, and the dimensions of the double-ring elements are adjusted to compensate for the phase delay. Three different cone angles of the FLP conical beam transmitarray are designed and fabricated. The simulated and measured results show good agreement, demonstrating the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Reconfigurable Reflectarray Antenna Based on Hyperuniform Disordered Distribution

Haoyang Zhang, Wen Wu, Qiao Cheng, Qiaoyu Chen, Yin-Hua Yu, Da-Gang Fang

Summary: This article presents a reconfigurable reflectarray antenna (RRA) combined with hyperuniform disordered distribution, which reduces the number of elements but still maintains a similar radiation pattern as a periodic array. The reflectarray also avoids the need for a complicated feeding network design. Designing an RRA with fewer elements is particularly important for achieving beam scanning.

Broadband Millimeter-Wave Circularly Polarized Open-Ended Waveguide Antenna Using Stubs and Its Application in Forming an Array

Jing-Yi Zhang, Jin-Dong Zhang, Qiao-Yu Chen, Wen Wu, Da-Gang Fang

Summary: This article proposes a new broadband circularly polarized (CP) antenna using an open-ended waveguide. By adjusting the amplitude and phase of the orthogonal fields with two stubs at different positions of the open-ended waveguide, both a single element and a four-element array are presented. Reasonable agreement is observed between the measured and simulated results. The antenna element has a wide overlapping impedance bandwidth of 50% and a 3 dB axial ratio (AR) bandwidth of 50%, covering 24-40 GHz, making it a promising candidate for wideband applications. The measured realized gains at 28 and 38 GHz are 6.7 and 6.9 dBic for an element and 12.3 and 13.9 dBic for an array, respectively.

Analysis and Design of a Ku-Band Bidirectional Time-Varying Vector-Sum Phase Shifter in 0.13-μm CMOS Technology

Guoxiao Cheng, Wen Wu, Jin-Dong Zhang, Qiaoyu Chen

Summary: This paper introduces a Ku-band passive time-varying phase shifter (TVPS) that utilizes a time-varying vector-sum method for continuous phase shifting. The implementation of the TVPS consists of a quadrature coupler, two 0/180 degrees biphase modulators, and an output combiner. Experimental results show that the TVPS can achieve a phase resolution of 10-bits, with an RMS phase error of 0.2 to 0.5 degrees and an RMS gain error of less than 0.2 dB over the 12 to 18 GHz frequency band.

Parametric Study of a Wideband Endfire Circularly Polarized Antenna for Millimeter-wave Applications

Yingrui Yu, Qiaoyu Chen, Jin-Dong Zhang, Chunhong Chen, Zuping Qian, Wen Wu

Summary: This paper proposes a wideband circularly polarized (CP) antenna element using substrate integrated waveguide technology at millimeter-wave (mmW) frequencies. The proposed CP element consists of a vertical metallic tapered slot antenna (TSA) and a horizontal printed dipole. Through a parametric analysis, the effects of the metallic TSA on far-field radiation fields were investigated. A fabricated and measured CP element showed reasonable agreement with simulated results, demonstrating its potential for mmW wireless applications due to its low-profile feeding structure, wideband characteristics, and ease of integration.
