Determinants of exposure levels of bisphenols in flemish adolescents

The study monitored internal exposure to six bisphenols in urine samples of adolescents in Flanders, Belgium, finding that BPA and its alternatives BPF and BPS had high detection frequencies. Urinary BPA levels decreased in Flemish adolescents compared to a previous cycle, suggesting ongoing replacement of BPA. Determinants of exposure were identified, including sex, season, smoking behavior, parental education level, recent food consumption, and product use.
The broadly used industrial chemical bisphenol A (BPA), applied in numerous consumer products, has been under scrutiny in the past 20 years due to its widespread detection in humans and the environment and potential detrimental effects on human health. Following implemented restrictions and phase-out initiatives, BPA is replaced by alternative bisphenols, which have not received the same amount of research attention. As a part of the fourth cycle of the Flemish Environment and Health Study (FLEHS IV, 2016-2020), we monitored the internal exposure to six bisphenols in urine samples of 423 adolescents (14-15 years old) from Flanders, Belgium. All measured bisphenols were detected in the study population, with BPA and its alternatives bisphenol F (BPF) and bisphenol S (BPS) showing detection frequencies > 50%. The reference values show that exposure to these compounds is extensive. However, the urinary BPA level decreased significantly in Flemish adolescents compared to a previous cycle of the FLEHS (2008-2009). This suggests that the replacement of BPA with its analogues is ongoing. Concentrations of bisphenols measured in the Flemish adolescents were generally in the same order of magnitude compared to recent studies worldwide. Multiple regression models were used to identify determinants of exposure based on information on demographic and lifestyle characteristics of participants, acquired through questionnaires. Some significant determinants could be identified: sex, season, smoking behavior, educational level of the parents, recent consumption of certain foods and use of certain products were found to be significantly associated with levels of bisphenols. Preliminary risk assessment showed that none of the estimated daily intakes (EDIs) of BPA exceeded the tolerable daily intake, even in a high exposure scenario. For alternative bisphenols, no health-based guidance values are available, but in line with the measured urinary levels, their EDIs were lower than that of BPA. This study is, to the best of our knowledge, the first to determine internal exposure levels of other bisphenols than BPA in a European adolescent population.

Summary: Organophosphorus flame retardants (OPFRs), which are widely used, have been found in humans and the environment. This study used human biomonitoring (HBM) data to estimate the contribution of dietary intake to the total exposure of OPFRs. The estimated dietary intake ranged from 0.02 to 0.2 mu g/kg bw/d for TCEP, 0.05 to 0.17 mu g/kg bw/d for TCIPP, and 0.03 to 0.18 mu g/kg bw/d for TDCIPP. The estimated dietary intake of TDCIPP contributes 11-173% to the estimated daily intake (EDI), while the estimated dietary intake of TCIPP exceeds 100% in most calculations.

Summary: Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are persistent, mobile, and bioaccumulative chemicals that pose a high risk to human health and the environment. A study conducted in Europe using harmonized human biomonitoring (HBM) data reveals that PFAS exposure may result in a significant health risk for a considerable number of individuals. Different hazard-based approaches were used in mixture risk assessments, with the Hazard Index (HI) approach showing the highest risk estimates. This study emphasizes the importance of HBM data in assessing the health risks of PFAS exposure.

Summary: As part of the European Human Biomonitoring Initiative, a human biomonitoring survey was conducted in 23 countries to produce comparable data for the EU. The survey utilized existing HBM capacity in Europe and aligned national or regional studies under the HBM4EU program. The survey included over 10,000 participants from different age groups and measured various biomarkers to assess exposure levels to different chemicals. The data obtained can be used as a reference for global comparison, evaluate the effectiveness of the European Commission's chemical strategy, and guide policy-making.

Summary: Phthalates are widely used as plasticizers and can have negative impacts on reproductive functions. However, existing human biomonitoring studies on internal exposure to phthalates in Europe differ in many aspects, making comparability challenging. The HBM4EU initiative gathered data from 29 studies across Europe to describe the general population's exposure to phthalates from 2005 to 2019. This study is an important step towards making internal exposures to phthalates comparable across countries and provides suggestions for improved harmonization in future studies.

Summary: Due to its simple process, environmental friendliness, and low operating costs, biometallurgy has become a popular technology for metals recovering from low-grade ores and tailings. An optimized agar was used to isolate and grow functional bacteria, resulting in the successful isolation of six functional stains. These strains were further tested for their ability to leach metals from polymetallic sulfide tailings, with significant improvements observed when the strains were mixed together. The selection of leaching process should be based on tailings composition and target metals.

This study investigated the effects of oral gestational exposure to particulate matter (PM) on ultrasonic vocalizations (USV). The findings suggest that this exposure may lead to social deficits and abnormal gene expression related to neurotransmitter systems. Further research is needed to better understand the effects of air pollution on neurodevelopmental disorders and the neurotransmission systems involved.

Conversion of seaweed waste to biochar for the removal of heavy metal ions from aqueous solution: A sustainable method to address eutrophication problem in water bodies

Summary: The present study investigated the sustainable approach for wastewater treatment using waste algal blooms. The biochar produced by the marine algae Ulva reticulata was used to remove chromium, nickel, and zinc from aqueous solutions. The study examined the adsorbents' properties and stability using SEM/EDX, FTIR, and XRD. The results showed that the biochar had high removal efficiency for the toxic metals, and the packed bed column effectively removed the heavy metal ions. The Thomas and Adams-Bohart models were found to best fit the regression values, and desorption studies were conducted to understand the sorption and elution processes.

A remote sensing-based strategy for mapping potentially toxic elements of soils: Temporal-spatial-spectral covariates combined with random forest

Summary: The selection of predictor variables is crucial in building a digital mapping model for potentially toxic elements (PTEs) in soil. Traditionally, spatial and spectral parameters have been used as predictor variables, but the temporal dimension is often overlooked. This study demonstrates the value of incorporating temporal indices in the model, leading to significant performance improvements. The temporal-spatial-spectral covariate combinations used in a random forest (RF) algorithm achieve satisfactory mapping accuracy and outperform other methods.

Heteroatom-modulated NiCo2O4 apparent energy activation of PMS for tetracycline removal: Mechanism and toxicity analysis

Summary: Heteroatom doping can reconfigure the electronic structure of heterogeneous catalysts, leading to the development of advanced oxidation water purification materials with superior performance and stability. In this study, a series of catalysts with different elemental doping were prepared using a simple and environmentally friendly method. The S-doped NiCo2O4 catalyst showed excellent catalytic performance for the removal of Tetracycline, with significantly increased kinetic constant and high oxidation and mineralization efficiency in a wide pH range. The degradation process was dominated by non-radical oxidation pathway after S doping, and the overall process moved towards low toxicity.

Summary: This study investigated the bacterial degradation of naphthalene (NPT) isolated from crude oil-contaminated soil. Bacillus sp. GN 3.4, a potential bacteria for NPT biodegradation, was isolated and the optimal conditions for NPT degradation were determined. The study suggests that Bacillus sp. GN 3.4 could potentially aid in bioremediation by eliminating NPT from the soil.
