Bimetallic complexes of 2,2'-malonylbis(N-phenylhydrazine-1-carbothioamide) were synthesized and characterized, with the ligand chelating to metal ions in different forms. In vitro experiments showed strong cytotoxic activity of the ligand against Hela cell lines, and the metal complexes exhibited even more potent effects on Hela cell lines.
The bimetallic complexes of 2,2 '-malonylbis(N-phenylhydrazine-1-carbothioamide) have been prepared and characterized by elemental and spectral analyses. The free ligand exists in keto-thione form, whereas in complexes it chelated to the metal ion in binegative tetradentate and neutral tetradentate manners. The electronic spectra and magnetic moment measurements showed that all the complexes have an octahedral geometry except the [Cu-2(H2L)(OAc)(2)]EtOH complex which has square planar structure supported by the electron spin resonance (ESR) spectral data. In addition, thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) carried out to clarify thermal stability of the ligand and its complexes. The optical band gap (E-g) was calculated using Tauc's equation and compared with their HOMO-LUMO gap obtained from DFT quantum chemical calculations. Furthermore, the in vitro cytotoxic activity against Hela (Epitheliod Carcinoma) and WISH (Human amnion) cell lines of isolated compounds were examined. The data indicated that the ligand has very strong activity against Hela cell line and moderate activity against WISH cell line. Accordingly, the metal complexes showed more potent effect against Hela than WISH cell lines.

Summary: N-(Anisyl)-5-(2-chloroacetamido)-4-cyano-3-methylthiophene-2-carboxamide (3) was reacted with various nucleophilic reagents, such as sulfur, oxygen, and nitrogen nucleophiles, to obtain corresponding derivatives. The synthesized thiophene compounds were characterized by IR, H-1 NMR, and C-13 NMR. Among them, the thienopyridine-carboxamide compound 11 showed the most potent antitumor activity against liver cancer and ovarian cancer cell lines, with IC50 values similar to Sorafenib.

New Schiff base ligand and some of its coordination compounds: Synthesis, spectral, molecular modeling and biological studies

Mohamed H. Abdel-Rhman, Ahmed A. El-Asmy, Reyad Ibrahim, Nasser M. Hosny

Summary: Schiff bases are important compounds with various applications, especially in the field of biology. Metal complexes derived from 2-((4-oxopentan-2-ylidene)amino)benzoic acid (H2L) with Co(II), Zn(II), Cu(II), and Ni(II) were isolated and characterized. The synthesized compounds displayed good agreement between their HOMO-LUMO energy gap (AEH-L) calculated using DFT and their experimentally determined optical band gap (Eg). The Ni(II) and Zn(II) complexes showed the highest antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus, Vibrio cholerae, Aspergillus Niger, and Aspergillus flavus.

Summary: This study synthesized a series of heterocyclic compounds containing an indene moiety, including indeno[1,2-d]imidazole, indeno[1,2-e]triazine, indeno[1,2-c]pyrazole, and indeno[1,2-b]pyrrole. The synthesis strategy involved reactions of ninhydrin with various nitrogenous nucleophilic reagents. The synthesized compounds showed excellent antibacterial activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. They also exhibited good to excellent antioxidant activity. The compounds with imidazole, pyrazole, and pyrrole rings, as well as methoxy and amide substituents, showed enhanced antioxidant activity.
