Dermatology inpatient consultations in a tertiary hospital - a retrospective analysis

Joseph Joseph, Kelvin Truong, Annika Smith, Pablo Fernandez-Penas

Summary: This study analyzed 306 dermatology consultations in a tertiary Australian hospital for inpatients, showing that dermatologists changed or established management plans in 82% of cases. The most commonly misdiagnosed conditions were dermatitis and skin infections. The study highlights the importance of dermatology input in improving diagnosis and management for hospitalized patients, potentially reducing unnecessary investigations and improving healthcare quality.

Clinicopathological characteristics of new primary melanomas in patients receiving immune checkpoint inhibitor therapy for metastatic melanoma

Thomas E. Pennington, Cathy Yunjia Zhao, Andrew J. Colebatch, Pablo Fernandez-Penas, Pascale Guitera, Hazel Burke, Richard A. Scolyer, Alexander M. Menzies, Matteo S. Carlino, Serigne Lo, Georgina Long, Robyn P. M. Saw

Summary: Rates of new primary melanomas in patients treated with immune checkpoint inhibitors are low, with the new melanomas typically being detected at an early stage and having features associated with a favorable prognosis, likely due to close surveillance. Further study is needed to determine the long-term risk in patients achieving a durable response to immune checkpoint inhibitors and to investigate the potential influence of immunotherapy on the development and biology of new primary melanomas.

Merkel cell carcinoma in situ: A systematic review of prognosis and management

Kelvin Truong, Simone M. Goldinger, Shaun Chou, Julie R. Howle, Michael J. Veness, Pablo Fernandez-Penas, Alexander H. R. Varey

Summary: MCC in situ (MCCis) has an excellent prognosis with minimal risk of mortality and very low risk of recurrence when treated with wide local excision alone. Sentinel lymph node biopsy is unlikely to be useful for MCCis diagnosis and management.

Warfarin-induced skin necrosis after the use of an anticoagulation reversal agent

Lois Zhang, Kelvin Truong, Linda Chan, Jennifer Kim, Pablo Fernandez-Penas

Summary: Anticoagulant-induced skin necrosis is a rare and potentially life-threatening complication of anticoagulant therapy, with warfarin being a major cause, while the role of anticoagulation reversal agents like Prothrombinex-VF in this context is not commonly documented.

Genomic and proteomic findings in early melanoma and opportunities for early diagnosis

Rachel Teh, Ali Azimi, Gulietta M. Pupo, Marina Ali, Graham J. Mann, Pablo Fernandez-Penas

Summary: Overdiagnosis of early melanoma is a significant problem, and there is a demand for alternatives that are more accurate and cost-effective. Protein biomarkers may be more promising, but there is limited research on the proteomic investigations of melanoma progression from pigmented lesions.

Tape stripped stratum corneum samples are suitable for diagnosis and comprehensive proteomic investigation in mycosis fungoides

Hafsa Anees Qureshi, Ali Azimi, Jillian Wells, Pablo Fernandez-Penas

Summary: Non-invasive proteomic analysis has the potential to aid the diagnosis and understanding of Mycosis Fungoides (MF) by identifying differentially abundant proteins and altered biological functions. The top-250 variating proteins efficiently separate normal stratum corneum from matched MF samples.
