This study aims to determine grafting's efficiency to improve tomato growth and production under salinity stress conditions. A commercial tomato hybrid (cv. Bark) and eight wild tomato accessions were evaluated at molecular, physiological and agronomic levels. At the molecular level, two robust gene-targeting marker systems (Conserved DNA-Derived Polymorphism; CDDP and Start Codon Targeted Polymorphism; SCoT) were employed. Bark cv. was grafted as a scion onto the four tomato genotypes' roots as stocks. The rootstocks effect was evaluated by growing plants at 0, 100 and 200 mM NaCl. Our results showed that grafting enhanced plant shoots and roots growth (plant height, number of branches, plant fresh weight, root length, and root fresh and dry weight), fruit yield (total yield, number and weight of fruits) and fruit quality (Vitamin C, firmness and total soluble solids) in Bark on most tested rootstocks. A significant interaction between salinity levels and rootstocks for all measured hormones, antioxidants and proline was observed. In conclusion, our consistent results from the three approaches (molecular, physiological and agronomical) revealed that the four genotypes (LA1995, LA2711, LA2485 and LA3845) were found to be grouped and exhibit better performance under salinity stress conditions. Furthermore, grafting could be a low-cost alternative method to improve salt tolerance in sensitive tomato genotypes.

Abdel Wahab M. Mahmoud, Mahmoud M. Samy, Hoda Sany, Rasha R. Eid, Hassan M. Rashad, Emad A. Abdeldaym

Summary: This study investigates the effects of applying nanoelements (silicon and potassium) and biochar on the physiological and biochemical characteristics of potato plants in saline soil. The results demonstrate that the application of nanoelements and biochar significantly improves the growth performance, nutritional status, and yield of potato plants. The combined treatment shows the best growth and yield parameters, reducing transpiration rate, antioxidant enzyme activity, and abscisic acid content, while enhancing tuber quality. Therefore, the application of nanoelements and biochar is an effective method for improving the growth and crop productivity of potato plants under salinity conditions.

Summary: The development of multidrug resistance (MDR) caused by overexpression of P-glycoprotein (P-gp/ABCB1/MDR1) is the main reason for the failure of chemotherapy in carcinoma treatment. An in silico study was conducted to discover potential P-gp inhibitors by assessing the binding energies of 512 drug candidates. Five promising drug candidates, valspodar, dactinomycin, elbasvir, temsirolimus, and sirolimus, showed strong binding energies against P-gp transporter and displayed good pharmacokinetic properties. These results indicate their potential as prospective P-gp inhibitors and require further in vitro/in vivo investigations.

Summary: The pre-harvest foliar implementation of proline, methionine, and melatonin had a significant impact on the shelf-life and active composites of cauliflower florets during cold storage. Treated florets exhibited lower water loss, electrolyte leakage, browning index, and titratable acidity compared to untreated plants. Additionally, the pre-harvest treatments slowed down the loss of various nutrients and improved enzyme activity, resulting in improved nutritional quality and reduced browning.

Identification of virulence-related proteins during Botrytis cinerea-fruit interaction at early phase

Kui Liu, Wei Liu, Xinhua Huang, Yuhan Liu, Xiaomin Cui, Zhanquan Zhang, Boqiang Li, Mohamed M. El-Mogy, Shiping Tian, Tong Chen

Summary: This study conducted proteomic profiling of Botrytis cinerea conidial suspension in a plant experimental system and found that 219 proteins were involved in the infection of host plants by B. cinerea. These proteins were mainly secretory proteins, categorized as carbohydrate hydrolyzing enzymes, cell wall degrading proteins, redox-related proteins, proteases, and proteins with unknown functions. Phenotypic analysis on deletion mutants showed that these proteins differentially regulated the growth, conidiation, and virulence of B. cinerea on fruit. These differentially expressed proteins during fruit infection may provide insights into the mechanisms underlying B. cinerea pathogenesis and potential molecular targets for controlling grey mold.

Summary: This study conducted a field trial to evaluate the physiological responses and tolerance of jojoba plants to salinity stress, focusing on the role of proline as a foliar application. The results showed that proline at 450 ppm enhanced the growth and physiological characteristics of jojoba plants, as well as promoted the antioxidant system. The anatomical structure of leaves also exhibited favorable variations. These findings suggest that proline foliar application can improve the physicochemical and morphological characteristics of jojoba plants under salinity stress.
