Active participation of the public is crucial in the current COVID-19 pandemic, but certain factors complicate participation. Understanding critical health literacy in a pandemic can help professionals support individuals and communities in effectively dealing with the unique features of the pandemic.
In the current COVID-19 pandemic the active participation of the public is of central importance, however, certain factors found in this new pandemic disease complicates the participation. Addressing these complications needs public health and health promotion experts to understand the role of critical health literacy in a pandemic. We present the case for a definition of critical health literacy in a pandemic, CHL-P. We suggest that CHL-P can help professionals to support individuals and communities as agents for effectively dealing with the unique features of this pandemic.

Challenging the association between health literacy and health: the role of conversion factors

Rene Ruegg, Thomas Abel

Summary: Previous studies have shown significant correlations between health literacy and health outcomes, but the influence of social and personal factors on these associations has been underexplored. This study used a moderation approach to examine how these factors could act as conversion factors in the relationships between health literacy and health outcomes. The findings indicate that individuals with beneficial social or personal factors have stronger associations between health literacy and health outcomes.

Exploring Well-Being and Its Correlates among Young Men Using Sen's Capability Approach: Results from the Young Adults Survey, Switzerland (YASS)

Susanne Ferschl, Peter Gelius, Karim Abu-Omar, Maike Till, Richard Benkert, Thomas Abel

Summary: This study follows Sen's capability approach to assess young people's well-being in terms of capabilities and functionings. Results show that young men with lower capital equipment rated their capabilities and functionings lower than others, with differences observed in health, happiness, and intellectual stimulation. The study confirms the effects of social, economic, and cultural capital on overall capabilities and functionings. Future studies should analyze issues of choice and adaptation to restricted living conditions to better understand the mechanisms underlying the transformation of capabilities into functionings.

Complexity awareness among university students in Switzerland during the Covid-19 pandemic

Carina Nigg, Richard Benkert, Lidya Tadesse, Thomas Abel

Summary: This study developed pandemic-specific items to assess complexity awareness among university students and found that 49.6% demonstrated limited awareness while 50.4% demonstrated high awareness. Female gender, highly educated parents, and attending a practically oriented university were associated with high awareness. The results suggest the need to support students in understanding the complexity of the Covid-19 pandemic.
