This study found that biochanin A (BCA) may attenuate obesity and its associated cardiomyopathy by suppressing oxidative stress and inflammation through activation of the Nrf-2 pathway and inhibition of NF-kappa B activation.
Objective: In the present study, we evaluated the effect of biochanin A (BCA) on high-fat diet (HFD)-induced obesity cardiomyopathy. Methods: BCA (10 mg/kg body weight) was administered to HFD-induced obese rats for 30 days, and its effect on anthropometrical, morphological, plasma cardiac, and inflammatory biomarkers, along with cardiac lipid profiles was assessed. Results: Supplementation of HFD to rats significantly increased body mass index, obesity index parameters, and cardiac lipid profile along with notable oxidative stress and inflammation. Additionally, BCA treatment in obese rats demonstrated a superior therapeutic action by restoring the altered parameters to almost normal levels. Simultaneously, BCA increased the activities and mRNA expressions of enzymatic antioxidants by upregulating the Nrf-2 pathway and inhibiting the NF-kappa B cascade. Conclusion: BCA may attenuate obesity and its associated cardiomyopathy by suppressing oxidative stress and inflammation through activation of the Nrf-2 pathway and inhibition of NF-kappa B activation.

Summary: The study showed that Biochanin-A could significantly improve lipid metabolic abnormalities and reduce inflammation in isoproterenol-induced myocardial infarction in rats. By inhibiting the expressions of proinflammatory cytokines and matrix metalloproteinases, BCA has a positive effect on the pathological processes of myocardial infarction.

Polyherbal Formulation Ameliorates Diabetic Cardiomyopathy Through Attenuation of Cardiac Inflammation and Oxidative Stress Via NF-κB/Nrf-2/HO-1 Pathway in Diabetic Rats

V. V. Sathibabu Uddandrao, Brahmanaidu Parim, Sengottuvelu Singaravel, Ponmurugan Ponnusamy, Chandrasekaran Ponnusamy, Vadivukkarasi Sasikumar, Ganapathy Saravanan

Summary: This study demonstrated that the polyherbal formulation (PHF) successfully attenuated inflammation and oxidative stress in diabetic cardiomyopathy rats by regulating the NF-kappa B/Nrf-2/HO-1 pathway. The results suggest that PHF may be a potential therapeutic agent for DCM.

Βeta-glucan suppresses high-fat-diet-induced obesity by attenuating dyslipidemia and modulating obesogenic marker expressions in rats

Seshathri Eraniappan, Prathap Balasubramaniyan, V. V. Sathibabu Uddandrao, Anitha Roy, Sengottuvelu Singaravel

Summary: The study examined the therapeutic potential of beta-glucan (BG) found in mushrooms and cereals against high-fat-diet-induced obesity. Rats were fed a high-fat diet with BG supplementation for 6 weeks, resulting in reduced body weight gain and improved hyperglycemia. BG also mitigated dyslipidemia by regulating the expressions of key markers associated with obesity. The study concluded that BG is a potential candidate for treating high-fat-diet-induced obesity by modulating obesogenic marker expressions, specifically the master regulator PPAR-gamma.

Biochanin A Attenuates Hyperglycemia in High-Fat Diet-Streptozotocin-Induced Diabetic Rats by Modulating the Activities of Carbohydrate-Metabolizing Enzymes in Vital Organs

Summary: This study evaluated the antihyperglycemic effects of biochanin A in a high-fat diet-streptozotocin-induced type 2 diabetes rat model. The results showed that biochanin A significantly reduced glucose levels, insulin resistance, hemoglobin levels, and the activity of certain enzymes, while increasing the activity of hexokinase and glycogen synthase and hepatic levels of glycogen in hyperglycemic rats.
