Societal benefits of river restoration - Implications from social media analysis

Nina N. Kaiser, Andrea Ghermandi, Christian K. Feld, Yaron Hershkovitz, Martin Palt, Stefan Stoll

Summary: The study evaluated the success of river restoration projects in terms of their impact on cultural ecosystem services (CES) and human well-being by analyzing photographs from social media posts. The method was effective in identifying previously unrecognized values of river restoration sites, but may overlook certain CES that are known to occur at the sites.

Pollinator sampling methods influence community patterns assessments by capturing species with different traits and at different abundances

Amibeth Thompson, Mark Frenzel, Oliver Schweiger, Martin Musche, Till Groth, Stuart P. M. Roberts, Michael Kuhlmann, Tiffany M. Knight

Summary: The study compared the impact of two common sampling methods on wild bee and hoverfly communities in Germany. The results indicated that the differences in species richness across sampling methods were mainly attributed to the number of individuals captured, rather than species diversity.

Summary: Research in global change ecology often relies on global climatic grids, which may not accurately reflect temperature conditions below vegetation canopies and near the ground surface. This study provides global maps of soil temperature at different depths, highlighting the significant differences between soil and air temperature. These maps are valuable for ecological applications, but further improvement in spatiotemporal resolution is needed.

Summary: In a study conducted in Germany, it was found that temperature had a linearly increasing effect on flying insect biomass across the country, but this effect turned negative in the hot months of June and July when local temperatures exceeded long-term averages. Land cover had little influence on insect biomass, with grasslands, pastures, and orchards containing the highest insect biomass.

Summary: This study compared the effects of different Malaise trap types on insect biomass and species richness. It found that trap type significantly influences the captured insect biomass and species richness. The Townes trap models showed higher total species richness compared to Bartak traps, and the white roofed Townes trap captured a higher richness of pollinators.

Summary: Extensively managed grasslands are facing loss and degradation due to agricultural intensification and land abandonment, causing negative impacts on insect populations. This study used nationwide butterfly data to analyze the effects of land cover and land-use intensity on butterfly species richness and trait composition. The results demonstrated the importance of low herbivore livestock densities in preserving pollinating insects and safeguarding biodiversity in agricultural landscapes.

SDM profiling: A tool for assessing the information-content of sampled and unsampled locations for species distribution models

Charles J. Marsh, Yoni Gavish, Mathias Kuemmerlen, Stefan Stoll, Peter Haase, William E. Kunin

Summary: Species distribution models (SDMs) are important tools for biodiversity and conservation. Assessing their reliability in unsampled locations is challenging, especially with sampling biases. We propose a sensitivity analysis technique called SDM profiling, which examines the impact of unsampled locations on the overall model by analyzing the effect on variable response curves and the prevalence of affected environmental conditions. The method involves adding pseudo-presence and pseudo-absence data to unsampled locations and comparing the probability surfaces of the original and modified SDMs. This approach can be used for visualizing model certainty, identifying optimal sampling locations, pinpointing redundant locations, and identifying potentially erroneous occurrence records.

Summary: Due to historical anthropogenic pressures, freshwater ecosystems are highly vulnerable to biodiversity loss. Mitigation efforts, such as wastewater treatment and hydromorphological restoration, aim to improve environmental quality and restore freshwater biodiversity. This study analyzed 1,816 time series of freshwater invertebrate communities across 22 European countries from 1968 to 2020. The findings reveal overall increases in taxonomic and functional diversity and abundance, but these increases have plateaued since the 2010s. Communities downstream of dams, urban areas, and croplands show lower chances of recovery. Faster rates of warming are associated with lesser gains in biodiversity. Additional mitigation measures are needed to revive the recovery of freshwater biodiversity in response to emerging pollutants, climate change, and invasive species.

Effects of high and low flows on abundances of fish species in Central European headwater streams: The role of ecological species traits

Lucas Mignien, Stefan Stoll

Summary: Hydrological variability is important for fish communities in freshwater ecosystems. This study examined the effects of high and low flow patterns on the abundance of 17 fish species in headwater streams in Germany. The results showed that long-term hydrological indices were better predictors of fish abundance than shorter-term indices. Different clusters of species had different responses to low-flow conditions, with some species being tolerant to frequency but susceptible to duration, while others were tolerant to magnitude but susceptible to frequency. Species responses to high flows were more complex, with different clusters of species showing different preferences for duration, magnitude, and frequency. Understanding these response patterns is crucial for assessing the risks to fish species from climate change and human intervention.

Taxonomic and functional reorganization in Central European stream macroinvertebrate communities over 25 years

Summary: Climate warming can result in the replacement of cold-temperature species by warm-temperature species, which has implications for ecosystem functioning that are not well understood. This study quantified the contribution of different temperature-adapted taxa to changes in community functional diversity in stream macroinvertebrates. The results indicate a process of thermophilization and increasing functional diversity at local scales in Central European streams.

The benefits of counting butterflies: recommendations for a successful citizen science project

Elisabeth Kuehn, Marc Becker, Alexander Harpke, Ingolf Kuehn, Christian Kuhlicke, Thomas Schmitt, Josef Settele, Martin Musche

Summary: Citizen science projects are popular tools to collect biodiversity data in various scientific fields. However, little is known about the benefits and motivations of participants, as well as their expectations. Using the German Butterfly Monitoring project as an example, this study found that most participants had a high educational level and were close to retirement. Their motivation to join the project was to preserve the natural environment and contribute to scientific knowledge. Participants benefitted from enhancing their knowledge about butterflies and had an intrinsic sense of working for a greater good. The study also highlighted the importance of good communication and intrinsic motivation in establishing successful citizen science projects.

Effects of Climate and Atmospheric Nitrogen Deposition on Early to Mid-Term Stage Litter Decomposition Across Biomes

TaeOh Kwon, Hideaki Shibata, Sebastian Kepfer-Rojas, Inger K. Schmidt, Klaus S. Larsen, Claus Beier, Bjorn Berg, Kris Verheyen, Jean-Francois Lamarque, Frank Hagedorn, Nico Eisenhauer, Ika Djukic

Summary: Litter decomposition is influenced by environmental factors, substrate quality, microbial communities, and N deposition. Climate impacts on global-scale decomposition are general but become more significant as decomposition progresses, while N deposition effects are litter-specific and significant in certain biomes. Climate changes are expected to increase litter mass loss, while N deposition changes may dampen climate-driven increases in decomposition, depending on biome and substrate stage.

Summary: Phenology monitoring is important for understanding forest functioning and climate impacts. This research compares the phenological behavior of European beech forests using Tree-Talker (TT+) and Sentinel 2 satellite data. The study finds differences in the information derived by the two sensor types, particularly in terms of season length, phenology changepoints, and leaf period variability. TT+ with its higher temporal resolution demonstrates precision in capturing the phenological changepoints, especially when satellite image availability is limited.
