The study found that COVID-19-related quarantine had a minimal impact on smoking and dietary habits of a rural population in northern Italy, but significantly increased the intake of various food categories, resulting in a decrease in dietary quality.
North of Italy was severely hit by the COVID-19 (Coronavirus disease 19) pandemic. This induced the government to adopt severely restrictive measures to reduce the contagion risk, forcing most of the population to stop working and from leisure activities, and to remain at home for several weeks. Our study aimed to evaluate the effect of COVID-related quarantine on smoking and dietary habits of a well-characterized northern Italian rural population. For this purpose, while lockdown restrictions were in place (February-April 2020), 359 subjects from the Brisighella Heart Study cohort underwent a phone interview about their lifestyle habit changes during COVID-19-related quarantine. Quarantine did not significantly modify smoking habit nor body mass index. Subjects significantly increased daily carbohydrates consumption, all fresh vegetables, healthy vegetable oils, milk and yogurt, alcoholic drinks, sugars and sweets, and coffee. The weekly consumption of low-fat meat, cured meat other than ham, cheeses, eggs, nuts and mixed seed oils significantly increased, while the weekly intake of fish, mussels, and legumes significantly decreased during lockdown. The Dietary Quality Index was reduced from 42.4 +/- 4.1 to 37.8 +/- 4.7 (p < 0.03). In accordance with our findings, COVID-19-related quarantine might worsen the quality of diet, also leading to an increased intake of almost all food categories.

Summary: This study investigates the association between very high HDL-cholesterol levels and cardiovascular mortality (CVM), and whether this association is influenced by hyperuricemia. The results show a J-shaped association between high HDL-cholesterol levels and CVM in women, but not in men. Additionally, the risk of CVM related to high HDL-cholesterol is increased in women with hyperuricemia.

Summary: Recent advancements in smart, wearable technologies have led to the ability to detect various medical conditions, including pathologic cardiac rhythms, through continuous collection and real-time analysis of electrocardiogram (ECG) data. This study presents a modified QRS detection algorithm, AMPT, which is a simplified version of the well-established Pan-Tompkins algorithm. Using archived ECG data, the AMPT algorithm demonstrated improved computational efficiency by 5-20x compared to the Pan-Tompkins algorithm, while also universally enhancing correctness. These findings support the translation of the AMPT algorithm to mobile platforms for continuous, real-time QRS detection.

Summary: Although coffee has been linked to various cardiovascular benefits, its impact on blood pressure remains unclear. This study found that moderate coffee consumption was associated with lower systolic blood pressure, while heavy coffee consumption was associated with higher levels of systolic blood pressure.

The Effect of Semaglutide on Blood Pressure in Patients without Diabetes: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Cormac Kennedy, Peter Hayes, Sulafa Salama, Martina Hennessy, Federica Fogacci

Summary: This study found that the GLP-1 RA drug semaglutide can significantly reduce weight and improve blood pressure in non-diabetic patients. The analysis included 6 RCT trials with a total of 4744 participants, and the results showed that the participants had normal blood pressure at baseline. After semaglutide treatment, the mean reduction in systolic blood pressure was 4.83 mmHg, and the mean reduction in diastolic blood pressure was 2.45 mmHg.

Concordance of LDL-C Estimating Equations with Direct Enzymatic Measurement in Diabetic and Prediabetic Subjects

Serkan Bolat, Gozde Erturk Zararsiz, Kuebra Dogan, Necla Kochan, Serra I. Yerlitas, Ahu Cephe, Gokmen Zararsiz, Arrigo F. G. Cicero

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the concordance of LDL-C-estimating equations with direct enzymatic measurement in diabetic and prediabetic populations. It was found that all equations had lower concordance with direct enzymatic measurement in diabetic and prediabetic groups, with the Martin-Hopkins extended equation performing the best. Additionally, direct assay methods can be used at low values of the non-HDL-C/TG ratio (<2.4) as the performance of the equations in LDL-C estimation decreases.

Summary: Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are the leading cause of death globally, and current pharmacotherapy is not optimal. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop new drugs with higher efficacy and better safety profiles. This review summarizes the recent advances in cardiovascular pharmacology in 2022, including the approval of first-in-class drugs for the treatment of obstructive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, type 2 diabetes mellitus, and heart failure independent of left ventricular ejection fraction. It also discusses the repurposing of existing drugs and the potential of new therapies for the treatment of various cardiovascular diseases.

Summary: This systematic review examines the role of Cluster of Differentiation (CD) 93 in cardiovascular disease. A total of 182 studies were analyzed, indicating a potential association between CD93 and cardiovascular risk factors and diseases (such as hypertension, dyslipidemia, heart failure, coronary artery disease, and ischemic stroke). However, the quality and scope of the studies are insufficient to determine the diagnostic and prognostic value of CD93 in cardiovascular disease.

Summary: Atherosclerosis and ASCVD can be improved by reducing the levels of LDL cholesterol. A new injectable antibody targeting PCSK9, called Evolocumab, has been approved for better lipid control in high-risk individuals. The use of Evolocumab has shown significant improvement in blood pressure and arterial pulse wave velocity, as well as a decrease in H2O2 production.

The Effect of Dietary Supplementation with Plant Sterols on Total and LDL-Cholesterol in Plasma Is Affected by Adherence to Mediterranean Diet: Insights from the DESCO Randomized Clinical Study

Arrigo F. G. Cicero, Federica Fogacci, Marina Giovannini, Elisabetta Rizzoli, Elisa Grandi, Sergio D'Addato, Claudio Borghi

Summary: The DESCO study found that dietary supplementation with plant sterols significantly improved the lipid profile, particularly the levels of total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and apolipoprotein B-100. Compared to placebo, the intake of plant sterols also resulted in greater reductions in lipid levels, with better efficacy observed in individuals following a Mediterranean dietary pattern.

Adherence to the Mediterranean Diet Association with Serum Inflammatory Factors Stress Oxidative and Appetite in COVID-19 Patients

Mahsa Mohajeri, Reza Mohajery, Arrigo F. G. Cicero

Summary: This study investigated the association between adherence to the Mediterranean diet and serum inflammatory factors, total antioxidant capacity, appetite, and symptoms of COVID-19 patients. The results showed that patients who adhered more to the Mediterranean diet had milder symptoms and lower levels of serum inflammatory factors. Therefore, clinical trials are suggested to confirm the effectiveness of the Mediterranean diet.
