A new genus and new species of blind freshwater cave crab are described from Chongzuo City, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, China based on morphology and mitochondrial 16S rDNA sequences. The new genus, Phasmon gen. nov., is established for P. typhlops sp. nov., which is only the second blind cave crab known from China and East Asia. The combination of a very wide carapace, overall depigmentation, reduced orbits and vestigial unpigmented eyes of Phasmon immediately separates it from all known potamid genera. Molecular divergence estimates based on 16S rDNA suggest that the lineage to which the new genus belongs diverged from other potamids at the beginning of the Late Miocene (10.8 million years ago), much earlier than other Chinese cave crabs.

Two new freshwater crab species of the genus Nanhaipotamon Bott, 1968 (Crustacea, Decapoda, Potamidae) from Huizhou, Guangdong Province, southern China

Chao Huang, Siying Mao, Hsi-te Shih

Summary: Two new morphologically distinct species of Nanhaipotamon are described from Huizhou, Guangdong Province, southern China. One of them is the first species of the genus to be recorded at an altitude of over 700 meters. The genetic analysis shows that the two new species have close relationships with their respective sympatric congeners, indicating a need for further investigation.

Geothelphusa boreas, a new montane freshwater crab (Crustacea: Potamidae: Geothelphusa) from northeastern Taiwan, and the identity of G. hirsuta Tan & Liu, 1998

Jhy-Yun Shy, Hsi-Te Shih, Jean-Jay Mao

Summary: A new freshwater crab species, Geothelphusa boreas sp. nov., has been identified in the montane area of northeastern Taiwan based on morphological and molecular evidence. The species is distinguished from similar congeners by male first gonopod structure and male thoracic sternite proportions, and molecular evidence supports the recognition of the new species and the conspecificity of G. hirsuta with G. takuan.

Molecular evidence and differences in gonopod morphology lead to the recognition of a new species of the freshwater crab genus Candidiopotamon Bott, 1967 (Crustacea, Brachyura, Potamidae) from eastern Taiwan

Hsi-Te Shih, Tohru Naruse, Christoph D. Schubart

Summary: A new species of freshwater crab, Candidiopotamon penglai, was discovered in eastern Taiwan. It is morphologically similar to C. rathbuni from western Taiwan but can be distinguished by the morphology of the male first gonopod (G1) and mitochondrial DNA. The genetic differentiation and morphological differences between the two species within Taiwan are discussed, and a key to the species of Candidiopotamon is provided.

Description of a new species of brackish-water crab of the genus Ptychognathus Stimpson, 1858 (Crustacea: Brachyura: Varunidae) from southern Taiwan

Jhih-Wei Hsu, Hsi-Te Shih, Jheng-Jhang Li

Summary: This study describes a new species of brackish-water crab, Ptychognathus sakaii, from southern Taiwan and provides a comprehensive key to the ten species of this genus in Taiwan. The new species is similar to its congeners, but can be distinguished mainly by the features of the carapace, ambulatory legs, and male first gonopods.
