The composition and vascular/antioxidant properties of Taraxacum officinale flower water syrup in a normal-fat diet using an obese rat model

Taraxacum officinale flower water syrup (TOFS) has beneficial effects on regulating blood lipids and antioxidant status, improving atherosclerosis and liver damage.
Ethnopharmacological relevance: Taraxacum officinale (L.), commonly called dandelion has been used for centuries as a natural medicine to treat inflammatory diseases including some metabolic alterations associated with obesity. Aim of the study: Based on animal experiments this study aims to explore the potential mechanisms of action of T. officinale flower water syrup (TOFS) together with a normal-fat diet in the intervention of obesity. Materials and methods: Obese male albino-Wistar rats (n = 8) at 25 weeks of age were fed with a normal-fat diet with or without added 27.82% TOFS (w/w) for 4 weeks. The reactivity of thoracic aorta and antioxidant capacity were studied. Results: TOFS delivered daily 926.8 mu g of L-chicoric acid, 20.19 mu g of luteolin and 3.379 g of sucrose. TOFS showed beneficial effects by regulating blood lipids (HDL, x1.11-fold increase), thereby lowering the risk factors for atherosclerosis (TC/HDL, x0.90-fold). The antioxidant status was improved via an increase in plasma superoxide radical scavenging (SOD, x1.6-fold) and a decrease in lipid peroxidation (MDA, x0.81-fold). Moreover, the following were decreased: Cu (x0.53-fold), Zn (x0.72-fold) and the Cu/Zn molar ratio (x0.60-fold). A marker for liver damage/disease was beneficially decreased (ALP, x0.87-fold). TOFS modulated in a significant way COX-depended relaxation to ACh (p = 0.05) but not to CORM-2 (p = 0.1651) in isolated thoracic arteries, by decreased participation of vasoconstrictor prostanoids. The vascular contraction to prostaglandin F-2 alpha was also decreased (x0.62-fold). We observed no change in the feed intake, body weight, organ-to-body weight ratio, blood glucose, CAT, FRAP, AST, ALT, TBARS/carbonyls (in heart, liver, kidneys, spleen) and carbonyls (in blood plasma, thoracic arteries); as well as F(2-)isoprostanes in urine. Vascular response to the vasodilators ACh, SNP, A23187, CORM-2, pinacidil, NS-1619 and to the vasoconstrictors NA, U-46619, ET-1 as well as hyperpolarizing mechanism(s) were not modified. Conclusions: TOFS possesses beneficial properties by regulating prostanoids and antioxidant status.

Chromium Nanoparticles Together with a Switch Away from High-Fat/Low-Fiber Dietary Habits Enhances the Pro-Healthy Regulation of Liver Lipid Metabolism and Inflammation in Obese Rats

Summary: The study investigated the effects of chromium supplementation and switching dietary habits on lipid metabolism, inflammation, and oxidative stress in Wistar rats. The combination of chromium nanoparticles and dietary changes showed the strongest reduction in fat content and cholesterol in the liver. This combination also had favorable antioxidative effects. Supplementation with chromium nanoparticles alone also improved lipid metabolism and oxidative stress, although to a lesser extent.

The Current State of Knowledge about the Biological Activity of Different Parts of Capers

Summary: The caper, derived from the Latin word capra meaning goat, refers to the salt-fermented floral buds of the perennial shrubs from the Capparis genus. C. spinosa is one of the most popular species, and its aromatic floral buds are collected before blooming, dried, and pickled. Capers are commonly marinated and enjoyed in vinegar, brine, or oil. They have potential as dietary supplements due to their low calorie content and abundance of bioactive phytochemicals. Research has shown that C. spinosa possesses various nutritional and biological properties, including antioxidant activity from its phenolic compounds. This paper reviews the biological properties, including toxicity, of the fruits, buds, seeds, roots, and leaves of C. spinosa.

Dose-Related Regulatory Effect of Raspberry Polyphenolic Extract on Cecal Microbiota Activity, Lipid Metabolism and Inflammation in Rats Fed a Diet Rich in Saturated Fats

Summary: The required amount of berry polyphenols for health benefits is difficult to achieve through fresh fruit consumption, suggesting polyphenol-rich extracts as a dietary alternative. This study fed rats high-fat diets supplemented with 0.1 or 0.3% raspberry polyphenols and found that the higher dose of extract had more noticeable health-promoting effects, including reduced white adipose tissue weight, hepatic triglyceride content, and plasma IL-6 concentration, as well as increased acetic acid concentration in the cecal digesta. The enhanced content of ellagitannin and anthocyanin metabolites in the blood plasma of rats administered the high dose extract may partially explain these effects.

Its berries and leaves are known to contain phytochemicals and have been used in folk medicine for the treatment of various conditions. This study examined the phytochemical content and biological activity of sea buckthorn seeds. The results showed that sea buckthorn seeds contain various flavonoids and have antioxidant and anticoagulant potential. However, further research is needed to identify the specific compounds responsible for these effects, especially in vivo models.

The Effect of Copper Nanoparticles and a Different Source of Dietary Fibre in the Diet on the Integrity of the Small Intestine in the Rat

Summary: The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of different types of dietary fibre (cellulose, inulin, pectin, and psyllium) in combination with recommended or enhanced levels of CuNPs on selected biological parameters of intestinal integrity in rats. The results showed that replacing CuCO3 with CuNPs in the diet reduced lactic acid and apoptosis markers levels in the small intestine, but it also increased DNA oxidation. Inulin had the most beneficial effect on DNA repair mechanisms, while pectin had the highest ability to inhibit inflammatory processes and apoptotic cell death in the small intestine. These findings suggest that dietary fibre supplementation can protect the small intestine against oxidative effects of CuNPs by enhancing the intestinal barrier.

The Influence of Copper Nanoparticles on Neurometabolism Marker Levels in the Brain and Intestine in a Rat Model

Summary: The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of different forms and dosages of copper on neurodegenerative markers in the brain and jejunum. The experiment involved feeding male Wistar rats a rat diet with two CuCO3 dosages and two CuNP dosages. Nanoparticles reduced the level of GAChE, increased the levels of AChE and LRP1, and decreased β-amyloid and Tau protein in both the brain and intestine of rats. The highest levels of beneficial markers and lowest levels of toxic markers were observed in rats receiving a standard dose of Cu.

The Interaction of Dietary Pectin, Inulin, and Psyllium with Copper Nanoparticle Induced Changes to the Cardiovascular System

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the effects of dietary fiber supplementation with different types of nanoparticles on the cardiovascular system in rats. The results showed that compared to pectin, inulin and psyllium supplementation with a standard dose of copper nanoparticles improved antioxidant capacity and reduced heart malondialdehyde levels. Furthermore, with an enhanced dose of copper nanoparticles, inulin and psyllium enhanced vasodilation through up-regulation of COX-2-derived vasodilator prostanoids.

Prebiotics Together with Raspberry Polyphenolic Extract Mitigate the Development of Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Diseases in Zucker Rats

Summary: Previous studies have shown that dietary supplementation with prebiotic fructooligosaccharides (FOSs) and polyphenols can alleviate disorders related to the early stage of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). This experiment aimed to investigate whether raspberry polyphenols together with FOSs can regulate advanced-stage NAFLD in genetically obese Zucker rats. The results showed that the addition of FOSs and raspberry polyphenolic extract to the diet reduced liver fat accumulation, improved antioxidant potential, lowered plasma enzyme activities, and increased insulin sensitivity. These effects may be attributed to the upregulation of specific receptors in the liver responsible for regulating lipid metabolism and glucose and bile acid synthesis.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the effects of supplementation with chromium nanoparticles (Cr-NPs) on the gut microenvironment in rats fed a high-fat diet. The results showed that Cr-NPs mainly acted by altering the activity of gut microbiota, leading to decreased concentration of short-chain fatty acids and increased level of cecal lithocholic acid. Switching to a low-fat diet had a more significant impact on obesity-related disorders, improving microbial activity, composition, and the production of short-chain fatty acids.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of Fufangmuniziqi formula (FFMN) on Alzheimer's disease (AD) and the role of alkaloids, flavonoids, and saponins in the process. The results showed that FFMN improved cognitive and memory impairment in the AD mouse model. Alkaloids enhanced the cholinergic system, while flavonoids and saponins attenuated neuroinflammation and oxidative stress. These findings suggest that the combination of alkaloid, flavonoid, and saponin fractions derived from FFMN is a promising anti-AD agent.

Network pharmacology was used to construct a network of metabolite-reaction-enzyme-gene constituents, and key components and hub genes were screened. Shicao showed hepatoprotective effects against acute liver injury in rats.
