Summary: The aim of this paper is to estimate the impact of a massive implementation of PAYT schemes, by gathering information for a panel of Italian municipalities and assessing the effects of switching from PAYO to PAYT on waste generation and cost. The results show that the adoption of PAYT schemes brings a simultaneous significant reduction in both quantity and cost, especially for unsorted waste.

Summary: This study investigates the willingness of Chinese urban residents to accept the pay-as-you-throw (PAYT) charging model. The results show that currently only 54.53% of urban residents are willing to accept this model. The average annual cost that residents are willing to pay for PAYT is relatively low, amounting to 58.616 RMB. The main reasons for the low acceptance of PAYT among residents include behavioral attitudes, social norms, and perceived behavioral control factors.

Summary: The recovery of 12 critical raw materials (CRM) from municipal solid wastes (MSW) via leachate recirculation was evaluated using a 4 L semi-pilot scale column percolation. The results showed that the recovery of the metal (loid)s was mainly influenced by pH, organic content, type of metal(loid)s, age of the waste, and redox potential. A comparison of leachate from the leachate recirculated columns before and after the initiation of recirculation indicates an increase in the concentrations of certain CRM and metalloids. The first recirculation cycle supported achieving 100 % recovery. CRM and metalloids in leachate can be recovered, with concentrations usually below 1 mg/L. Leachate recirculation can enhance the increasing concentration of CRM in landfill leachate.

Summary: This paper proposes a simple arithmetic metric called the Market Endurance (ME) metric to objectively assess products' ability to retain their value over time. The metric rewards long life spans, repairability, upgradeability, adaptability, and business models that encourage longer product retention and higher value for customers. It can be used for cross-product and cross-sector comparisons, making it a catalyst for circular innovation and transition.

Summary: This work provides a complete exergy analysis of municipal solid waste incineration process, with considerations on increasing O2 %mol and adopting oxy-combustion conditions. Flue gas recirculation and oxygen-enriched air were found to improve exergy efficiency and reduce environmental impact. However, limited exergetic improvements were observed due to the exergy cost of the air separation unit.

Summary: This study examines the effects of Big 4 audit firms' national and city-specific industry specialization on audit quality in the UK. The findings suggest that clients of the Big 4 joint specialists demonstrate higher audit quality, with lower discretionary accruals and smaller accrual estimation errors. Additionally, when Big 4 auditors are industry leaders at both national and city levels, their clients are more likely to receive modified audit opinions and going concern audit reports.

Summary: This study empirically investigates the impact of the existence and characteristics of a stand-alone risk committee (RC) on the likelihood of stock price crash risk in listed financial firms. The study finds that the presence of a qualified RC has a significant negative impact on stock price crash risk. Moreover, firms with effective RCs are less likely to experience stock price crash risk, particularly when they have a high level of institutional ownership, especially from dedicated institutional investors.

Summary: In an international setting, this paper examines the impact of macro-level governance quality and corruption index on economic growth rate using advanced statistical estimation approaches. The empirical results suggest that the national governance index and corruption index have both positive and negative effects on economic growth rate. Additionally, foreign direct investment and population have positive impacts, while trade openness has a negative impact. The study recommends strengthening anti-corruption efforts and improving governance quality to attract more foreign direct investment and accelerate economic growth.

Summary: This study analyzes the characteristics of process parameters in three lean gas ethane recovery processes and establishes a prediction and multiobjective optimization model for ethane recovery and system energy consumption. A new method for comparing ethane recovery processes for lean gas is proposed, and the addition of extra coolers improves the ethane recovery. The support vector regression model based on grey wolf optimization demonstrates the highest prediction accuracy, and the multiobjective multiverse optimization algorithm shows the best optimization performance and diversity in the solutions.

Summary: The paper proposes a novel deep learning-based prediction framework, aTCN-LSTM, for accurate cooling load predictions. The framework utilizes a gate-controlled multi-head temporal convolutional network and a sparse probabilistic self-attention mechanism with a bidirectional long short-term memory network to capture both temporal and long-term dependencies in the cooling load sequences. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed method, which can serve as an effective guide for HVAC chiller scheduling and demand management initiatives.
