This study aimed to evaluate the differences in oxidative stress biomarkers and antioxidant capacity between asthma patients and healthy individuals. The results showed a significant increase in levels of malondialdehyde and protein carbonyls, as well as a decrease in reduced glutathione levels, in asthma patients. These findings suggest the presence of severe oxidative stress in asthma patients even under controlled conditions.
Objective There is evidence that reactive oxygen species, especially free radicals, produced during the immune and inflammatory response may play important roles in the development of asthma. We aimed to evaluate the levels of certain oxidative stress biomarkers and antioxidant capacity in asthma patients with different asthma control levels in comparison to healthy subjects. Methods A total of 120 adult allergic asthma patients and 120 healthy individuals were included in this study. Using spectrophotometric methods, we analyzed two oxidative stress markers, levels of malondialdehyde (MDA) and protein carbonyls (PC), as well as reduced glutathione (GSH), total antioxidant capacity (FRAP) and catalase activity as critical antioxidant defense parameters in the blood samples of allergic asthma patients and healthy controls. The patients were divided into 3 subgroups according to asthma control test (ACT) results: totally controlled (TCG), partially controlled (PCG) and uncontrolled (UCG) subgroups. All biomarkers were compared between the three patient subgroups, as well as between total asthma patients and control subjects. Results There were remarkable differences between the control group and the combined patient group for all parameters. A significant increase in MDA and PC, especially in the UCG (p < 0.01 and p < 0.05, respectively) was detected in comparison to other subgroups. Additionally, increased MDA and PC levels, as well as decreased GSH levels were observed in all subgroups individually in comparison to the control (p < 0.001). Conclusions This research demonstrates the presence of severe oxidative stress, considering the increase in lipid peroxidation and protein oxidation, in patients with allergic asthma, even under controlled conditions.

Increased serum nesfatin-1 levels in patients with inflammatory bowel diseases

Sengul Beyaz, Erdem Akbal

Summary: This study investigated circulating levels of nesfatin-1 in patients with inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), showing significantly elevated levels during active disease periods with good diagnostic value for IBD. Nesfatin-1 could serve as an additional inflammatory marker for the diagnosis of IBD.

Impact of mental health on disease activity in mastocytosis during COVID-19 pandemic

Nida Oztop, Semra Demir, Sengul Beyaz, Derya Unal, Bahauddin Colakoglu, Suna Buyukozturk, Asli Gelincik

Summary: This study investigated the influence of mental health problems developed during the COVID-19 pandemic on the course of mastocytosis. The study found that fear of COVID-19 and mental health status were more severe in patients during the lockdown period (LP) compared to the return to normal period (RTNP), and there was a positive correlation between mental health status and exacerbation of mastocytosis symptoms. Therefore, providing psychological support during the pandemic is important in controlling the severity of mastocytosis symptoms.

Summary: The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the course of refractory chronic spontaneous urticaria (CSU) was investigated in this study. It was found that disease activity and levels of anxiety and depression were higher during the quarantine period. Some patients discontinued or prolonged the interval of omalizumab treatment. Therefore, it is recommended for patients to continue their omalizumab treatment and consider prolonging the interval based on disease control.

Anaphylaxis in Risky Populations

Sengul Beyaz, Asli Gelincik

Summary: Anaphylaxis is often under-recognized, missed in diagnosis, and delayed in treatment, despite advances in the field of allergy. The symptoms range in severity and the condition is heterogeneous, necessitating a special approach in patient groups at high risk. The present review addresses these risk populations and provides treatment strategies.

Summary: The sensory nervous system is crucial for maintaining cardiac function. However, our understanding of cardiac afferents is limited. In this study, we mapped the VGLUT2-expressing cardiac afferent fibers and found that the dorsal side of the heart has higher nerve density compared to the ventral side. We also observed a diverse range of spinal afferent nerve endings that innervate different parts of the heart. In a chronic myocardial infarct model, we observed hyperinnervation at the infarct border zone and denervation at distal sites of the ischemic area. These findings highlight the importance of further studying the functional and physiological consequences of sensory innervation remodeling after ischemic injury.

Summary: This study evaluated the association between chronic spontaneous urticaria (CSU) and sleep disturbance. The results showed that patients with CSU and allergic rhinitis had poor sleep quality, impaired sleep hygiene, increased daytime sleepiness, and intermediate type of circadian rhythm. These sleep problems may affect the patients' quality of life and treatment success.

Summary: The Turkish Adult Asthma Registry was developed to gather information about asthma patients in Turkey. The registry showed a predominance of middle-aged obese women with moderate-to-severe asthma, mostly allergic and eosinophilic in nature. Risk factors for uncontrolled asthma included low education level, severe asthma attacks, low FEV1 values, chronic rhinosinusitis, and living in specific regions. These findings provide valuable insights for improving asthma service delivery.

Allergic and Nonallergic Rhinitis According to Symptoms: A Retrospective Chart Review

Zeynep Celebi Sozener, Sengul Beyaz, Sadan Soyyigit

Summary: Symptoms can guide whether rhinitis is allergic or non-allergic. Sneezing, eye symptoms, and itching are common in allergic rhinitis patients, while nasal obstruction and postnasal drip are more common in non-allergic rhinitis. The presence of nasal obstruction and postnasal drip may indicate that the disease is more persistent, more severe, and often accompanied by chronic rhinosinusitis, nasal polyposis, and asthma.
