Halomonas titanicae (H. titanicae) plays a significant role in the corrosion process, inhibiting corrosion of EH40 steel under aerobic conditions and accelerating it under anaerobic conditions. This is closely related to the metabolic pathways of H. titanicae and its utilization of electron acceptors.
Influences of electron acceptors utilized by Halomonas titanicae (H. titanicae) on corrosion of EH40 steel in aerobic/ anaerobic systems were studied. It was reported that in the presence of H. titanicae, corrosion of EH40 steel was inhibited under aerobic condition but accelerated under anaerobic condition. The corrosion inhibition was closely related to the decreased oxygen concentration by the aerobic metabolism of H. titanicae with oxygen as final electron acceptor. While in the anaerobic medium corrosion acceleration could be attributed to the disruption of corrosion product film via reducing solid electron acceptor Fe(III) to soluble Fe(II) by H. titanicae.
