Effects of benzo[a]pyrene on the reproductive axis: Impairment of kisspeptin signaling in human gonadotropin-releasing hormone primary neurons

Giulia Guarnieri, Matteo Becatti, Roberta Squecco, Paolo Comeglio, Rachele Garella, Lara Tamburrino, Sara Marchiani, Linda Vignozzi, Gabriella Barbara Vannelli, Mario Maggi, Annamaria Morelli

Summary: The neuroendocrine control of reproduction is regulated by the pulsatile release of GnRH by hypothalamic neurons. BaP, a pollutant, can disrupt endocrine function and affect gonadal function and gamete maturation. This study found that BaP alters the phenotype and function of GnRH neurons by interfering with KISS1R signaling and GnRH secretion, highlighting its importance in the central neuroendocrine control of reproduction.

Serum Interleukin-36 α as a Candidate Biomarker to Distinguish Behcet's Syndrome and Psoriatic Arthritis

Alessandra Bettiol, Filippo Fagni, Irene Mattioli, Giacomo Bagni, Gianfranco Vitiello, Alessia Grassi, Chiara Della Bella, Marisa Benagiano, Arianna Troilo, Katarzyna Stella Holownia, David Simon, Flavia Rita Argento, Jurgen Sota, Claudia Fabiani, Matteo Becatti, Claudia Fiorillo, Georg Schett, Giuseppe Lopalco, Luca Cantarini, Domenico Prisco, Elena Silvestri, Giacomo Emmi, Mario Milco D'Elios

Summary: In this study, the ability of serum interleukin (IL)-36a concentration to differentiate Behcet's syndrome (BS) from psoriatic arthritis (PsA) was investigated. The results showed significantly lower IL-36a concentrations in BS patients compared to PsA patients, although both groups had significantly higher IL-36a levels compared to healthy controls. A cut-off of 420.6 pg/mL displayed good specificity and sensitivity in discriminating PsA from BS.

Blood Leukocyte ROS Production Reflects Seminal Fluid Oxidative Stress and Spermatozoa Dysfunction in Idiopathic Infertile Men

Matteo Becatti, Gianmartin Cito, Flavia Rita Argento, Eleonora Fini, Alessandra Bettiol, Serena Borghi, Amanda Mannucci, Rossella Fucci, Claudia Giachini, Rita Picone, Giacomo Emmi, Niccolo Taddei, Maria Elisabetta Coccia, Claudia Fiorillo

Summary: A significant number of infertile men are classified as idiopathic or unexplained cases due to the lack of clear diagnosis based on standard semen parameters. This study investigates the role of oxidative stress in male infertility and suggests that blood redox markers can be used as an additional tool for assessing sperm quality and providing specific information in preconception care.
