Cultural heritage sites are constantly exposed to deterioration due to urban environmental phenomena, but plant landscaping can act as a potential regulator of the microenvironment, mitigating the adverse effects of the local climate. Through field measurements and numerical modeling, it was found that evergreen trees can effectively reduce the risk of deterioration on wall surfaces caused by freeze-thaw cycles, efflorescence, and subflorescence, providing a theoretical basis for sustainable preservation of cultural heritage sites.
Cultural heritage sites are exposed to urban environmental phenomena and various forms of deterioration that degrade their historical and cultural value. As an important element, plant landscaping can be a potential regulator of the microenvironment, mitigating the adverse effect of the local climate to cultural heritage. The influence of evergreen trees on the weathering deterioration of the Nanjing City Wall was studied and evaluated through field measurements and numerical modeling. A two-dimensional hygrothermal 'City Wall-plant' model was developed to simulate the shaded and unshaded surfaces. The results showed that compared to the unshaded case, the shaded surface showed smaller temperature fluctuations with an increase in the minimum temperature by 0.5 degrees C - 0.8 degrees C, smaller water content fluctuations with the standard deviation decreasing by 0.017 kg/kg at the height of 0.15 m, and a lower evaporation rate by 8 - 18%. This means that evergreen trees can effectively reduce the risk of deterioration on wall surfaces due to freeze-thaw cycles, efflorescence, and subflorescence. These findings provide the theoretical basis for the sustainable preservation of sites with cultural heritage.

A Market Framework for a 100% Renewable Energy Penetration Spot Market

Gaojunjie Li, Jun Yang, Fuzhang Wu, Xu Zhu, Song Ke, Yonghui Li

Summary: The global installed capacity of renewable energy sources (RESs) is increasing rapidly and the pursuit of 100% RESs power supply raises extreme source-load coordination problems. This paper proposes a spot market framework to solve the market failure caused by near-zero marginal cost of RESs and scarcity pricing of flexible resources (FRs). The framework includes a day-ahead renewable energy temporal capacity market and a real-time energy sharing market, decoupling RESs and FRs to ensure fair competition and achieving optimum social welfare through a price-driven distributed energy sharing mechanism.

Assessment and optimization of environmental regulation measures for stone carvings from the perspective of algal growth

Huarong Xie, Long Shen, Xiaohan Chen, Shuichi Hokoi, Yonghui Li

Summary: Airborne algae are the main cause of damage to open-air stone carvings, which are currently protected by certain sheltering measures. This study analyzes the inhibition of algal growth on stone carving surfaces using glass covers and pavilion covers. The results show that pavilion covers effectively reduce algal growth on vertical surfaces and mitigate thermal stress damage, while completely sealed glass covers promote algal growth and increase the risk of thermal stress damage. An air exchange rate between the glass cover and outside air of 0.5 to 2.0 times per hour is recommended in hot and humid climates, along with a lower glass transmittance.

Chentao Yue, Mahyar Shirvanimoghaddam, Alva Kosasih, Giyoon Park, Ok-Sun Park, Wibowo Hardjawana, Branka Vucetic, Yonghui Li

Summary: This paper proposes a density evolution (DE) framework for analyzing the iterative joint decoding (JD) in non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) systems using ordered-statistics decoding (OSD) for short block codes. The density-transform feature of the soft-output OSD (SOSD) is investigated through deriving the density of the extrinsic log-likelihood ratio (LLR) with known priori LLR densities. The DE framework characterizes the density-transform features of nodes over bipartite graphs (BGs) under binary phase shift keying (BPSK) transmission, accurately tracking the evolution of LLRs during iterative decoding, especially at moderate-to-high SNRs.

Ruobin Wu, Yan Ma, Huarong Xie, Xudong Wang, Shuichi Hokoi, Yongqiang Yue, Junjian Hu, Baogang Mu, Yonghui Li

Summary: The hygrothermal environment of cultural heritages, particularly outdoor ones, is crucial for their conservation. This study investigated the hygrothermal conditions of painted statues in the Maijishan Grottoes. The findings revealed significant differences in solar radiation intensity and surface temperature between the upper and lower statues, resulting in surface loss rates of nearly 15% and 50%, respectively. Direct insolation had a significant effect on temperature changes and thermal stress, leading to greater degrees of surface loss. Evaluation based on thresholds and suitable conservation methods are necessary for preserving heritages in open or semi-open environments.

The reliability of models for converting formaldehyde emissions from wood-based materials to different environmental conditions

Tunga Salthammer

Summary: Monitoring the potential formaldehyde emission of wood-based materials through test chamber investigations has significantly contributed to reducing indoor formaldehyde concentrations. However, the different methodologies used in these procedures prevent direct result comparison. Empirical models for converting formaldehyde steady-state concentrations based on temperature, humidity, air change rate, and loading were developed in the 1970s and have been modified to accommodate the development of lower-emitting materials. Formaldehyde emissions from wood-based materials are complex and require nonlinear regression tools for mathematical analysis.
