Economic Optimal Nitrogen Rate Variability of Maize in Response to Soil and Weather Conditions: Implications for Site-Specific Nitrogen Management

The dynamic interactions between soil, weather and crop management have considerable influences on crop yield within a region, and should be considered in optimizing nitrogen (N) management. The objectives of this study were to determine the influence of soil type, weather conditions and planting density on economic optimal N rate (EONR), and to evaluate the potential benefits of site-specific N management strategies for maize production. The experiments were conducted in two soil types (black and aeolian sandy soils) from 2015 to 2017, involving different N rates (0 to 300 kg ha(-1)) with three planting densities (55,000, 70,000, and 85,000 plant ha(-1)) in Northeast China. The results showed that the average EONR was higher in black soil (265 kg ha(-1)) than in aeolian sandy soil (186 kg ha(-1)). Conversely, EONR showed higher variability in aeolian sandy soil (coefficient of variation (CV) = 30%) than in black soil (CV = 10%) across different weather conditions and planting densities. Compared with farmer N rate (FNR), applying soil-specific EONR (SS-EONR), soil- and year-specific EONR (SYS-EONR) and soil-, year-, and planting density-specific EONR (SYDS-EONR) would significantly reduce N rate by 25%, 30% and 38%, increase net return (NR) by 155 $ ha(-1), 176 $ ha(-1), and 163 $ ha(-1), and improve N use efficiency (NUE) by 37-42%, 52%, and 67-71% across site-years, respectively. Compared with regional optimal N rate (RONR), applying SS-EONR, SYS-EONR and SYDS-EONR would significantly reduce N application rate by 6%, 12%, and 22%, while increasing NUE by 7-8%, 16-19% and 28-34% without significantly affecting yield or NR, respectively. It is concluded that soil-specific N management has the potential to improve maize NUE compared with both farmer practice and regional optimal N management in Northeast China, especially when each year's weather condition and planting density information is also considered. More studies are needed to develop practical in-season soil (site)-specific N management strategies using crop sensing and modeling technologies to better account for soil, weather and planting density variation under diverse on-farm conditions.

Fe isotope fractionation caused by phase transition of FeS and implications for Fe isotope signatures of the mantle and core

Summary: The phase stability of FeS and the equilibrium Fe isotope fractionation are important for understanding the interior of the Earth and terrestrial planets. In this study, first-principles methods were used to investigate the pressure-dependent phase transitions of FeS and the isotope fractionation between FeS phases and mantle silicates. The results show that measurable Fe isotope fractionation occurs under mantle pressure-temperature conditions.

The effect of different biocrusts on soil hydraulic properties in the Tengger Desert, China

Summary: Water redistribution has a profound impact on the function of dryland ecosystems. Biological soil crusts (BSCs or biocrusts), which cover a large portion of arid land soil surface, have conflicting effects on water redistribution at a regional scale. This study clarified the effects of different biocrusts on soil hydraulic properties in the Tengger Desert. The results showed that biocrusts significantly altered soil hydraulic properties, including water holding capacity, soil hydrophobicity, water sorptivity, and unsaturated hydraulic conductivity. Understanding the role of biocrusts in hydraulic properties can help improve our understanding of soil water distribution, movement, and retention in the area.

The majority of the studies showed that TCM has potential efficacy and safety in the treatment, prevention, and rehabilitation of COVID-19.

Phase junction crystalline carbon nitride nanosheets modified with CdS nanoparticles for photocatalytic CO2 reduction

Summary: Polymeric carbon nitrides, especially the crystalline allotrope known as poly(triazine imide) (PTI), have been found to have great potential for photocatalytic CO2 reduction. However, the poor visible light absorption of pristine PTI significantly hinders its photocatalytic performance. In this study, crystalline carbon nitride nanosheets composed of PTI and melon phase junctions were synthesized via one-pot polycondensation and modified with CdS nanoparticles to create CCN/CdS hybrids with double-junction structures. The resulting CCN/CdS heterostructures demonstrated broad visible-light harvesting, enhanced CO2 adsorption/activation, and improved separation and transfer of photoinduced charges. Thus, the optimized CCN/CdS hybrid exhibited remarkable activity and high stability for photocatalytic CO2-to-CO conversion.

Diagnostic accuracy of the 4AT for delirium: A systematic review and meta-analysis

A theoretical study of a series of iridium complexes with methyl or nitro-substituted 2-(4-fluorophenyl)pyridine ligands with the low-efficiency roll-off performance

Summary: A series of iridium complexes with metal-capped polypyridines were studied using DFT and TD-DFT calculations. Two main ligands, CFM and CFN, were obtained by replacing H atoms on the N counter of 2-(4-fluorophenyl)pyridine with methyl and nitro groups, respectively. The electronic structure, lowest singlet absorption, triple excited states, and emission spectra were theoretically investigated for these complexes.

Efficacy and safety of montelukast adjuvant therapy in adults with cough variant asthma: A systematic review and meta-analysis

K2Ni(SeO3)2: A Perfect S=1 Triangular-Lattice Antiferromagnet with Strong Geometric Frustration and Easy-Plane Anisotropy

Summary: A new perfect triangular lattice antiferromagnet K2Ni(SeO3)(2) has been synthesized, in which both in-plane and inter-plane geometric frustration is present. The compound shows antiferromagnetic order at T(N) ≈ 7 K. High-field magnetization and electron spin resonance indicate the presence of easy-plane anisotropy. Density functional theory calculations confirm the excellent two-dimensionality of the compound. Thus, K2Ni(SeO3)(2) is a perfect triangular-lattice antiferromagnet with strong frustration and easy-plane anisotropy.

Summary: This study aimed to compare the effectiveness, safety, and tolerability of different drugs for treating insomnia. The results showed that non-benzodiazepines, antidepressants, and orexin receptor antagonists may have positive effects on improving total sleep time, sleep onset latency, and wake time after sleep onset. The choice of insomnia drugs should consider the individual's insomnia phenotype, as well as the safety and tolerability of each drug.

Summary: This study presents a low-energy search for the Chiral Magnetic Effect (CME) in Au+Au collisions at RHIC and finds consistency between CME and flow-driven background hypothesis based on the definition of event planes and centrality range. This work opens up a possible roadmap for future CME exploration with high-statistics data from RHIC.

Charged particle therapy for high-grade gliomas in adults: a systematic review

Summary: High-grade gliomas remain difficult to treat despite standard therapy. Charged particle beams, especially carbon ion beams, have the potential to improve treatment outcomes. This systematic review assessed the safety, efficacy, and dosimetry of carbon-ion or proton radiotherapy for high-grade gliomas. The analysis of eleven eligible articles showed that charged particle radiotherapy was effective with manageable side effects. Carbon ion boost appeared to be superior to proton boost, but dose-escalation using proton boost was associated with severe brain necrosis. Further randomized control trials are needed, along with systemic therapeutic options.

Deep ResU-Net Convolutional Neural Networks Segmentation for Smallholder Paddy Rice Mapping Using Sentinel 1 SAR and Sentinel 2 Optical Imagery

Summary: This study used deep learning techniques to identify the distribution of paddy rice fields using phenological data from Sentinel-2 (S2) optical and Sentinel-1 (S1) Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) satellite imagery. The results showed that the DL model had a higher accuracy compared to the random forest (RF) classification. The study also conducted a change detection analysis over two epochs to understand the spatial-temporal dynamics of paddy rice agriculture in the study area.

Squeeze flow of a Maxwell fluid between two parallel disks or two spheres

Summary: In this study, the squeeze flow behavior of an upper convected Maxwell fluid between two rigid disks or spheres was investigated. It was found that the velocity field of the Maxwell squeeze flow between two disks is similar to that of a Newtonian fluid when the Deborah number is low. Based on the Newtonian fluid velocity field, the pressure distribution between two parallel disks was analyzed, and a theoretical model of normal squeeze force was developed. The same method was also used to analyze the interaction between two nearly contacting, arbitrary rigid spheres. Analytical expressions for the pressure distribution and normal squeeze force were obtained, which can be used in the contact model for discrete element simulation of wet particle systems with the Maxwell fluid.

Minimizing active canopy sensor differences in nitrogen status diagnosis and in-season nitrogen recommendation for maize with multi-source data fusion and machine learning

Summary: This study aimed to determine the potential to minimize the differences of two commonly used active canopy sensors (ACSs) in maize nitrogen (N) status diagnosis and recommendation using multi-source data fusion and machine learning. The results showed that the use of multi-source data fusion with machine learning models can improve the accuracy of ACS-based N status diagnosis and recommendation and minimize the performance differences of different active sensors.
