Summary: Marine antifouling coatings using functional polymers are important for combating marine fouling, and carrageenan, a sulfated polysaccharide, shows promise for further research due to its excellent antifouling properties. A spray-coating method is proposed in this study to apply carrageenan-based coatings to both 2D and 3D objects, resulting in coated surfaces that exhibit high stability and resistance to protein adsorption and marine diatom adhesion.

Summary: This study investigates coatings to mitigate the dual-atmosphere corrosion effect in Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (SOFC). The results show that coatings on the air-side can improve the sample's lifetime by reducing Cr evaporation even in a dual-atmosphere. Fuel-side coatings suppress the dual-atmosphere effect and the best results are obtained with metallic Al and Al2O3 coatings.

Summary: The marine industry needs to reduce emissions and solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) are seen as a promising option. However, the integration of SOFCs with ships and their economic and environmental impact is uncertain. This paper reviews studies on SOFCs for marine applications, discussing their developments, design drivers, integration possibilities, and potential improvements. Despite the high cost, SOFC systems could significantly reduce emissions in shipping.

Summary: The corrosion behavior of Al-Zn coatings on steel sheets in a polluted marine atmosphere was evaluated using weight loss tests, potentiodynamic polarization curves, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and acid salt spray test. The results showed that the Al-Zn coating formed a passivation film of Al2O3 with good corrosion resistance, resulting in a thick and dense layer of insoluble corrosion products. Furthermore, corrosion products such as Zn5Cl2(OH)8.H2O and NaZn4(SO4)Cl(OH)6.6H2O obstructed the diffusion of corrosive substances into the coating, thereby inhibiting further corrosion.

Summary: Solid lubricants, such as MoS2, have been widely used in the aerospace industry to reduce friction and wear. This study evaluates the influence of different carrier systems (solvent and water) on the tribological behavior of bonded MoS2 solid film lubricants. The tests show that the solvent-borne lubricant performs better in terms of load carrying capability, friction, and wear, attributed to the formation of a uniform transfer film. Understanding the interfacial processes and chemical composition of these lubricants is critical for achieving sustainable environmental lubrication.

Summary: In this study, a new type of eco-friendly high-temperature graphite-based solid lubricant was successfully developed, which exhibited excellent tribological properties with a very low friction coefficient and good wear protection for workpieces under high temperature conditions in the air atmosphere. Analytical techniques revealed the presence of solid lubricant graphite in the lubricating coating after high-temperature friction tests, and a synergistic effect between the protective surface film and the solid lubricant graphite was proposed to explain the superior lubricating performance.

Summary: In the industrial marine atmosphere of Qingdao, the composite coating on the surface of TC4 titanium alloy can significantly reduce the galvanic corrosion behavior of low-hydrogen-embrittlement Cd-Ti plated (LHE Cd-Ti) 300M steel and TC4 titanium alloy, delaying the corrosion process of anode LHE Cd-Ti 300M steel and reducing the loss of mechanical properties. The corrosion of LHE 300M steel is induced by pitting corrosion, where the Cl- in Qingdao atmospheric environment severely destructs the surface oxide film and contributes to pitting corrosion. Additionally, corrosive media containing sulfate ions can further aggravate the corrosion.

Summary: Biofouling is a significant challenge in the marine industry, and antifouling coatings are commonly used to address this issue. This article compares the effects of two natural antimicrobial compounds, capsaicin (CP) and Cinnamomum cassia oil (CO), when incorporated into hybrid sol-gel coatings. The results show that capsaicin exhibits greater efficacy against Gram-negative bacteria, making it a promising microfouling barrier coating for marine applications.

Summary: The Scanning Kelvin Probe was used to study passivation of AISI 304L stainless steel after cathodic polarisation, revealing the enrichment of surface film by Fe (II) hydroxides due to hydrogen effusion from the bulk. Pre-polarisation was found to accelerate crevice corrosion in the presence of chlorides. SKP mapping showed increased hydrogen sub-surface concentration and decreased passivity in the anodic zones of the crevice.
