The constant change in coating technology and environmental regulations has led to the development of low-solvent to solvent-free organic coatings, such as powder and high-solid coatings. These two technologies are well developed, but are still not the preferred choice when considering anticorrosive coating for marine and offshore applications. This mostly arise from a lack of perspective in their long-term behavior and from the difficulty in their applications. This review's principal aim is to describe powder and high-solid technologies from their formulation and application to their use in marine and offshore applications while recalling and giving key notions needed when the field of anticorrosive coatings is considered. First, the requirement for coatings to be called anticorrosive will be given alongside with their protection and failure mechanisms. The formulation and application for high-solid and powder coatings will be exposed followed by the description of the type of coating chemistry used in harsh environment. Finally, high-solid and powder coatings behavior in these types of environment will be discussed.

Potential influence of microorganisms on the corrosion of carbon steel in the French high- and intermediate-level long-lived radioactive waste disposal context

Summary: The study evaluated the possibility of microbially influenced corrosion (MIC) on carbon steel in high-level radioactive waste disposal. It investigated the corrosiveness of different environments at varying temperatures and utilized gravimetric and real-time monitoring methods. Microbial analyses including cultural and molecular characterizations supplemented the corrosion data.

Hydrogen effect on the passivation and crevice corrosion initiation of AISI 304L using Scanning Kelvin Probe

V. Shubina Helbert, A. Nazarov, F. Vucko, S. Rioual, D. Thierry

Summary: The Scanning Kelvin Probe was used to study passivation of AISI 304L stainless steel after cathodic polarisation, revealing the enrichment of surface film by Fe (II) hydroxides due to hydrogen effusion from the bulk. Pre-polarisation was found to accelerate crevice corrosion in the presence of chlorides. SKP mapping showed increased hydrogen sub-surface concentration and decreased passivity in the anodic zones of the crevice.

Spectroscopic imaging of the buried substrate/polymer interface upon exposure to corrosive environments

Dan Persson, Dominque Thierry

Summary: A new experimental set-up combining FTIR-ATR focal plane array (FPA) imaging and simultaneous electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements demonstrated spectroscopic imaging of water at the substrate/polymer interface with micrometer resolution, allowing for study of water uptake kinetics on polymer coated surfaces. This set-up can also be applied to study interfacial processes on polymer coated thin film metallic or metal oxide surfaces.

Real-time corrosion monitoring of aluminium alloys under chloride-contaminated atmospheric conditions

Erwan Diler, Fabienne Peltier, Johan Becker, Dominique Thierry

Summary: The study assessed the use of electrical resistance (ER) sensors to monitor the corrosion of Al94Cu6 alloy, showing good reproducibility under various conditions. The ER method provides real-time corrosion data for understanding corrosion mechanisms and developing accelerated tests. Factors such as chloride concentration, salt application frequency, and wet/dry cycles significantly affect the corrosion rate of aluminum alloys.

Summary: This study characterized an industrial polyester coil-coated steel sample using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, with a focus on understanding how water uptake affects the physical properties of the coil coating and extracting relevant parameters of the ageing processes. The water uptake was found to be a slow process, with different sorption kinetics observed for samples with different initial states.

Effect of Cathodic Polarisation Switch-Off on the Passivity and Stability to Crevice Corrosion of AISI 304L Stainless Steel

Varvara Shubina Helbert, Andrei Nazarov, Flavien Vucko, Nicolas Larche, Dominique Thierry

Summary: The study found that turning off cathodic polarization destabilizes the oxide film, slowing down the passivation rate of the stainless steel in air, while hydrogen absorption is proportional to the applied cathodic current density. A special crevice corrosion set-up was designed to monitor potential and galvanic current simultaneously, to study the impact of prior cathodic polarization on crevice corrosion onset.

Summary: The study presents an example of using RFID sensors for controlling air quality in museums or storages. These sensors, based on detecting the variation in the performance of RFID tags, can provide information on environmental corrosivity index and the presence of pollutants. Review of Cr-Free Coatings for the Corrosion Protection of Aluminum Aerospace Alloys

Fabienne Peltier, Dominique Thierry

Summary: Aluminum alloys, despite their advantages, are vulnerable to corrosion. To protect them, paints are applied, but environmental regulations have led to changes in the methods used. New developments involve finding alternatives to chromium (VI) and using hybrid sol-gel coatings. However, further testing is needed to determine the effectiveness of these coatings.

Summary: A mechanistic model was developed to study atmospheric bimetallic corrosion, with a simplified approach to the onset of localized corrosion attacks. The model was calibrated against measured galvanic current, corrosion attack properties, and corrosion products. The model showed promising results for analyzing corrosion chemistry and assessing pitting damage, especially at the beginning of exposure and at low humidity levels.
