Thouless pumping in disordered photonic systems

Integrated optics: combating disorder Research into the effect of temporally-modulated pumping in coupled optical waveguides may aid the design of future on-chip slow light devices. The result could be designs which are more robust against disorder and fabrication imperfections. Alexander Cerjan and coworkers from Pennsylvania State University and the University of Pittsburgh in the USA studied adiabatic pumping, also known as Thouless pumping, in a one-dimensional array of laser-written evanescently-coupled waveguides in borosilicate glass. Nearly quantized topological transport of light was observed, even in the presence of disorder which was introduced by a variation in the spacing between neighboring waveguides. The adiabatic pumping was achieved by dynamically modulating the refractive index of the waveguide array (where temporal modulation was mapped to spatial variations). Future research will explore the connection between Thouless pumping and dynamical quantum ratchets. Thouless charge pumping protocols provide a route for one-dimensional systems to realize topological transport. Here, using arrays of evanescently coupled optical waveguides, we experimentally demonstrate bulk Thouless pumping in the presence of disorder. The degree of pumping is quite tolerant to significant deviations from adiabaticity as well as the addition of system disorder until the disorder is sufficiently strong to reduce the bulk mobility gap of the system to be on the scale of the modulation frequency of the system. Moreover, we show that this approach realizes near-full-unit-cell transport per pump cycle for a physically relevant class of localized initial system excitations. Thus, temporally pumped systems can potentially be used as a design principle for a new class of modulated slow-light devices that are resistant to system disorder.

A Low-mass, Pre-main-sequence Eclipsing Binary in the 40 Myr Columba Association-Fundamental Stellar Parameters and Modeling the Effect of Star Spots

Summary: In this study, we introduce a benchmark eclipsing binary (EB) star, TOI 450 (TIC 77951245), to the pre-main-sequence population and analyze its properties. Using Gaia astrometry, we confirm that TOI 450 is a member of the Columba association, which is approximately 40 million years old. Our analysis shows that TOI 450 is an eccentric, equal-mass system with one grazing eclipse. By leveraging information from high-resolution spectra, we are able to achieve the precision of a double-eclipsing system and include the effect of star spots on eclipse depths.

Summary: We confirmed the existence of a two-planet system orbiting the K4 dwarf TOI 560 (HD 73583), with one planet in a moderately eccentric orbit and the other in a rare near-1:3 orbital resonance. We used a combination of photometric data and ground-based follow-up observations to validate the orbits and periods of the planets, and spectroscopy to confirm their planetary nature. This nearby young multiplanet system is suitable for atmospheric characterization with future missions.

Summary: The primary goal of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey IV APOGEE-2 was to observe red giant stars in the Galaxy and study their dynamics, morphology, and chemical evolution. In addition, the study also identified a sample of young stars in star-forming regions and young open clusters and determined six stellar properties for them. This study serves as a foundation for future studies on individual regions and global properties of stars in the pre-main-sequence phase.

Quantized fractional Thouless pumping of solitons

Summary: In many contexts, particle interactions can result in emerging phenomena. For example, the interaction between electrons leads to the fractional quantum Hall effect. In photonic systems, the nonlinear response of a medium mediates the interaction between photons, described by the nonlinear Schrodinger equation. Our study demonstrates that a strong nonlinearity can fractionally quantize soliton motion, leading to a rich fractional plateau structure.

Summary: We have confirmed the existence of three exoplanets orbiting TOI-4010 (TIC-352682207), a metal-rich K dwarf, through the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite observations. With the High Accuracy Radial velocity Planet Searcher, we measured the masses of these planets with a precision of 8-12%. The exoplanets include a sub-Neptune (TOI-4010 b) in the hot-Neptune desert, two similarly sized sub-Saturns (TOI-4010 c and d) on short-period orbits, and a super-Jupiter-mass companion (TOI-4010 e) in a long-period, eccentric orbit.

Summary: In this study, a transiting mini-Neptune HD 207496 b (TOI-1099) and its host star were characterized using HARPS spectroscopic observations, ground-based transits, high-resolution imaging, and TESS photometry. The host star is a young early K dwarf, and the planet's internal structure suggests it may have a water-rich or gas-rich envelope, or a mixture of both. Further observations are needed to distinguish between these hypotheses and determine the fate of the planet.

Summary: The TOI-1130 planetary system contains a gas giant planet, TOI-1130 c, and an inner Neptune-sized planet, TOI-1130 b, both of which have small eccentric orbits in a 2:1 resonant configuration. Additionally, a linear RV trend suggests the possible presence of an outer massive companion.

Summary: We report the discovery of a hot planet with a temperature of approximately 1055 K that transits the Sun-like star TOI-733. This planet is located in the small-planet radius valley and was discovered through the KESPRINT follow-up program using the HARPS spectrograph. The measurements suggest that the planet has a moderate density and may represent a highly irradiated ocean world with a volatile-enriched outer envelope.

Summary: NASA's TESS mission has detected and confirmed 20 hot Jupiters through coordinated observations using photometric, spectroscopic, and imaging techniques. These planets have short orbital periods and orbit relatively bright stars. The study includes measurements of obliquity and investigates the possibility of cluster membership. These findings contribute to the building of a comprehensive sample of hot Jupiters for future research.

Summary: The fifth iteration of Sloan Digital Sky Survey aims to observe about 5 million stars throughout the Milky Way using optical and near-infrared spectra. The resulting catalog of about 200,000 sources provides representative coverage of the young Galaxy.

Summary: The discovery of a temperate Earth-sized planet orbiting the cool M6 dwarf LP 791-18 provides an opportunity to investigate hospitable climate conditions around late-M dwarfs. The planet LP 791-18d, with its potential for water condensation on the permanent night side, is part of a coplanar system with a sub-Neptune LP 791-18c that retained its gas or volatile envelope. The gravitational interaction with the sub-Neptune has prevented the complete circularization of LP 791-18d's orbit, leading to continued tidal heating and possibly strong volcanic activity on the surface.

Reciprocal topological photonic crystals allow backscattering

Recent research has shown that in reciprocal photonic crystals, backscattering cannot be avoided, highlighting the importance of breaking reciprocity for the development of photonic Chern insulators.
