Summary: Better understanding of older patients' perspectives on barriers and enablers in physical activity promotion during hospitalization can help develop strategies to increase in-hospital physical activity. Physically dependent patients were more frequently encouraged by professionals to be physically active compared to independent patients, and focusing on physical barriers and motivational enablers for older patients may help increase their physical activity during hospitalization.

Summary: An individualized, multicomponent exercise program can effectively reverse the functional and cognitive decline in older patients during acute care hospitalization. Improvements in cognition mediate improvements in physical function, with cognitive function enhancements shown to have a significant impact on physical function improvements after exercise training.

Summary: This study found that better cognition and a longer stay in rehabilitation were associated with a positive improvement in walking speed in older people. This suggests that in older individuals with complex health problems or multiple morbidities, cognitive ability and longer rehabilitation periods play a significant role in rehabilitation outcomes.

Summary: This scoping review examined the use of co-design in developing physical activity interventions for older adults. The study found that there is a large degree of variability in how co-design is used and that there is a lack of studies directly measuring the effectiveness of the co-design process. The study also identified barriers and facilitators to co-design.

Summary: Physical function, including aerobic capacity, gait speed, and muscle strength, is proposed as a biomarker of healthy aging, predictive of adverse health events, disability, and mortality. Supervised exercise interventions for hospitalized older people have been proven safe and effective in preventing functional and cognitive decline. However, few studies have explored tailored physical activity guidelines for maximizing exercise-related effects on function.

Summary: Through this systematic review, it was found that aquatic physical exercise has positive effects on the mental component of quality of life, fear of falling, mood, anxiety, and internal health locus of control in healthy sedentary older adults. Older women with osteopenia or osteoporosis showed improvements in the mental component of quality of life. Studies on dementia demonstrated significant improvement in behavioral and psychological symptoms after aquatic intervention, while no effect on depressive symptoms was observed.

Summary: This study evaluated the effects of post-acute care on frail older adults in Taiwan after acute hospitalization. The results showed that post-acute care for more than two weeks significantly reduced the risk of emergency room visits, readmissions, and mortality within 90 days. Problems in self-care and usual activities were independent risk factors for subsequent adverse outcomes.

Summary: This systematic review synthesized evidence on physical activity and sedentary behavior during and after hospitalization, finding that patients tend to engage in more physical activity and less sedentary behavior at home compared to acute or subacute hospital settings. Enabling early discharge home through the implementation of home-hospitalization models may result in increased patient physical activity and reduced sedentary behavior, suggesting the potential benefits of such models on patient recovery and activity levels.

Summary: Older adults who live alone are more likely to experience social isolation. A study examined the experiences of older adult women who live alone in participating in group physical activity (PA). The findings showed that group PA could provide social support, motivation, and a sense of community, but there were also barriers and varying perspectives on what supports were needed. These findings suggest the importance of considering social barriers and structuring PA programs to encourage social participation and support the needs of older adults living alone.

Summary: This scoping review identified a variety of methods for monitoring the location of older people using global positioning devices. The study found that facilitators for participation and physical activity in older adults include safety, weather, and access to multi-purpose facilities, while common barriers include weather, safety, low income/high deprivation areas, and reliance on motor vehicles. There is a need for clear guidelines concerning the use of global positioning system devices and specified outcomes in primary research for better comparability across studies.

Summary: The use of the Internet has a significant impact on the physical health of older people, particularly in females, rural residents, and those living in central and western regions of China. The study also found that Internet use among older people can increase their exercise frequency and improve their physical health. To promote active aging, it is recommended to increase Internet accessibility among older people, introduce age-appropriate Internet systems and sports facilities, establish online fitness platforms, and promote scientific fitness programs.

Summary: This study investigated the association between fecal microbiota composition and brown adipose tissue (BAT) volume, activity, and radiodensity in young adults. The results showed that the abundance of Akkermansia, Lachnospiraceae sp., and Ruminococcus genera was negatively correlated with BAT volume and activity, while the abundance of Bifidobacterium genus was positively correlated with BAT activity. In addition, the abundance of Sutterellaceae and Bifidobacteriaceae families was positively correlated with glucose uptake by white adipose tissue and skeletal muscles. These findings suggest that fecal microbiota composition may play a role in the regulation of BAT and glucose uptake in young adults. Evaluation: 8/10.

Summary: This study assessed the effectiveness of a passive back support exoskeleton during a mechanical loading task. When wearing the exoskeleton, it reduced L5-S1 joint moments during trunk flexion, but also restricted joint flexion and center of mass motion. Statistical parametric mapping analysis was useful in determining the benefits and hindrances produced by wearing the exoskeleton during the simulated patient transfer task.

Summary: This study investigates the association between frailty and mortality. It finds that frailty is associated with higher mortality compared to pre-frailty. Variables such as sex, age, weight, and the use of proton-pump inhibitors are significantly associated with mortality. In the frail cohort, readmission, SPPB sit and stand, heart failure, and the use of certain medications also increase the risk of mortality. In the pre-frail cohort, factors such as Barthel's score, Pfeiffer test, and various comorbidities contribute to higher mortality risk.

Summary: This longitudinal study analyzed changes in physical activity, sedentary behavior, sleep, anxiety, mood, and perceived health in Spanish university students during and one year after the COVID-19 pandemic. The results showed decreased physical activity, increased sedentary time, and deterioration in sleep and perceived health during confinement. Most parameters improved one year later, but participants still reported lower physical activity, more sedentary time, and deterioration in sleep and perceived health compared to before confinement. Higher levels of physical activity and lower sedentary time were associated with better sleep and mental health during the pandemic.
