Summary: Bullying and cyberbullying victimization pose significant threats to adolescent development and mental health. This study found that prior experiences of physical and/or sexual abuse, witnessing domestic violence, and being a victim of intimate partner violence were associated with a higher likelihood of experiencing bullying and cyberbullying. However, perceived social support from teachers and classmates, as well as higher self-esteem, were associated with a lower likelihood of bullying and cyberbullying victimization. Protecting adolescents from these harmful experiences requires preventing exposure to violence during childhood and adolescence.

Summary: The study found that not experiencing physical and sexual abuse in childhood, as well as not being a victim of bullying and cyberbullying, is associated with high self-esteem. Being in a romantic relationship and experiencing intimate partner violence, along with other violent variables, can decrease the probability of medium and high self-esteem. Being male, a younger teenager, having a working mother, high problem-solving skills, and perceived social support are related to higher levels of self-esteem.
