Anaerobic co-digestion of leachate and glycerol for renewable energy generation

Paula Yumi Takeda, Jackeline Tatiane Gotardo, Simone Damasceno Gomes

Summary: This study evaluated the performance of anaerobic co-digestion of landfill leachate and crude glycerol, and found that the association of these substrates led to high organic matter removal efficiency and specific biogas production. Optimization through Central Composite Rotational Design and the modified Gompertz model improved the digestion conditions and significantly increased specific biogas production.

A validated tool of combining risk factors with fecal immunochemical test for selecting colonoscopy in asymptomatic Chinese population

Yi Liao, Senmao Li, Hao Chen, Chunyu Chen, Jintuan Huang, Feng Lin, Jianping Wang, Zuli Yang

Summary: A risk prediction system combining FIT and risk factors was developed to improve the sensitivity of colonoscopy screening. The system effectively stratified participants into high risk and low risk groups, with better predictive ability for colorectal neoplasia compared to using FIT alone.

Summary: The prognosis of children with neuroblastoma varies depending on the stage and biology of the tumor, and early-stage neuroblastoma has a better prognosis. Treatment with anti-GD2 antibody can improve the prognosis of high-risk patients.

Repurposing drugs for treatment of SARS-CoV-2 infection: computational design insights into mechanisms of action

Shubhangi Kandwal, Darren Fayne

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has had a negative impact on global human life, causing economic crises and health emergencies. In this study, computational drug design technologies were used to repurpose existing drugs as inhibitors of SARS-CoV-2 viral proteins. The results may help accelerate drug development against COVID-19 and have significant implications.

Taiwan's Successful COVID-19 Mitigation and Containment Strategy: Achieving Quasi Population Immunity

Li-Chien Chien, Christian K. Bey, Kristi L. Koenig

Summary: The authors discuss how Taiwan achieved control of COVID-19 without economic shutdown by implementing established public health principles and non-pharmaceutical interventions. Taiwan's success in creating quasi population immunity and preventing local transmission serves as a model for optimal public health management of COVID-19 and future emerging infectious diseases.

Imaging in the Diagnosis of Nonspecific Pyogenic Spondylodiskitis

Christoph Eckhard Heyde, Ulrich Josef Albert Spiegl, Anna Voelker, Nicolas von der Hoeh, Jeanette Henkelmann

Summary: The prevalence of nonspecific pyogenic spondylodiskitis has increased, causing high morbidity and mortality. The diagnosis is often delayed due to nonspecific clinical manifestations at the early stage. CT can assess the bony condition, while MRI is still the gold standard for diagnosis.

Facial Paralysis in Skull Base Osteomyelitis - Comparison of Surgical and Nonsurgical Management

Michael H. Freeman, Elizabeth L. Perkins, Kareem O. Tawfik, Matthew R. O'Malley, Robert F. Labadie, David S. Haynes, Marc L. Bennett

Summary: This study compared the outcomes of surgical and nonsurgical management for facial paresis secondary to skull base osteomyelitis. The results suggest that mastoidectomy and debridement with or without facial nerve decompression may improve facial nerve outcomes compared to medical management alone. However, there were no statistically significant differences in HB score changes across treatment groups. The best recoveries were observed in patients who underwent surgery within 14 days of paralysis onset.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the incidence of sigmoid sinus occlusion (SSO) following translabyrinthine surgery and its association with cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leak. The results showed that SSO after surgery is common and significantly associated with the development of postoperative CSF leak.

Evolutionary dynamics of respiratory syncytial virus in Buenos Aires: Viral diversity, migration, and subgroup replacement

Stephanie Goya, Maria Florencia Lucion, Meghan H. Shilts, Maria del Valle Juarez, Angela Gentile, Alicia S. Mistchenko, Mariana Viegas, Suman R. Das

Summary: Globally, the human respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a major cause of lower respiratory tract infections (LRTIs) in children. This study sequenced the complete genomes of RSV from pediatric patients in Buenos Aires and found that RSV-B was dominant from 2014 to 2016 before being abruptly replaced by RSV-A in 2017. The decrease in RSV genomic diversity observed in Buenos Aires in 2016 may have allowed the RSV-A predominance switch in 2017.
