Summary: The incidence of bacterial STIs among gay and bisexual men using PrEP in Australia was highest in the early stages of PrEP implementation and declined slightly after wider PrEP uptake. Widespread PrEP implementation can contribute to increased screening and detection of STIs.

Summary: The objective of this study was to evaluate the incidence of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs) among PrEP users in Germany. The results showed that PrEP is predominantly used by MSM and has a very low HIV infection rate. The incidence rates of STIs also decreased during the observation period. Continued implementation of PrEP coverage through health insurance is crucial in preventing HIV infections.

Summary: Combining multiple HIV testing strategies, including acute HIV infection screening, partner notification, and social contact referral, increased the detection of undiagnosed HIV infections within the socio-sexual networks of PLWH in Malawi. This approach proved to be effective in increasing HIV status awareness and promoting linkage to care.

Summary: This study compares the sociodemographic profiles of PrEP users in Germany before and after the reimbursement of costs. The findings show that there were no significant differences in the sociodemographic characteristics between the two cohorts. Almost all PrEP users were men who have sex with men (MSM). Before reimbursement, fewer individuals used PrEP on a daily basis, and more had used PrEP prior to enrolment. During follow-up, there was an increase in the number of sexual and condomless intercourse partners, as well as the proportion of individuals engaging in Chemsex.

Summary: Since the start of the coronavirus pandemic response in March 2020, there has been a decline in tests, vaccinations, diagnoses, and treatment initiations for sexual health, HIV, and viral hepatitis in England. The rapid shift towards online and outreach services during 2020 highlights the importance of evaluating the impact of these strategies on health inequalities.

Summary: An increase in sexually transmitted diseases has been observed among individuals aged 15 to 24, both globally and in Germany. Many infections are asymptomatic or have mild symptoms, resulting in late detection and unintentional transmission. The effects of persistent infection depend on the specific pathogen, with manifestations ranging from pelvic inflammatory disease to genital warts or cervical dysplasia. Most cases can be treated, and treatment should be given to sexual partners as well. Individualized treatment approaches are required for pregnant individuals based on the pathogen and stage of pregnancy.

Summary: It is crucial to use fully validated assays in molecular-based diagnosis, especially in the field of STD. Roche and Hologic provide effective assays for diagnosing CT, NG, MG, and TV, with different sensitivity and specificity parameters on their respective platforms. All assays demonstrated optimal diagnostic capacity to meet IVD DNA-based assay requirements.

Summary: We propose a mathematical model to examine the causes of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) epidemics and potential mitigation strategies. By categorizing the susceptible population based on prevention awareness, we analyze how their behavior, population size, and recruitment rate are affected by interventions. Our findings suggest that interventions targeting high-risk susceptible individuals can eliminate STDs, and sex education can effectively reduce the overall infection size. Furthermore, extending the survival time of infected individuals may delay the control of STDs unless high-risk sexual behavior is rejected. We also explore the presence, stability, and direction of Hopf bifurcation, which may explain the periodic oscillations in the infected population size.

Summary: HTLV-1 is a retrovirus that causes various diseases, significantly impacting the quality of life and mortality rate of its infected population. It is neglected despite its global distribution and endemicity in many countries. The virus spreads through vertical, sexual, and parenteral transmission, and prevention measures are crucial due to the lack of effective treatments. This article presents evidence on the magnitude, risk factors, and prevention of sexual transmission, aiming to raise awareness among healthcare workers for eradicating the infection.

Summary: Among the 37.7 million people living with HIV in 2020, 6.1 million were unaware of their HIV status. The study highlights the low rate of concurrent HIV testing among individuals tested for other sexually transmitted infections. Integration of HIV and STI services is necessary to improve prevention efforts, early diagnosis, and access to care.

Summary: This study investigated the association between aspirin use before admission and in-hospital all-cause mortality in older patients hospitalized for COVID-19. The findings suggest that aspirin use before admission did not appear to be associated with improved prognosis and may be related to longer hospital stays and more frequent transfers to the intensive care unit.

Summary: This study evaluated the efficacy of oral fosfomycin-trometamol (FT) for the treatment of male urinary tract infections (UTIs) caused by multidrug-resistant Enterobacterales. The results indicate that FT could be a potential alternative option for the treatment of multidrug-resistant Enterobacterales infections in male UTIs.

Summary: The study found that patients with left-sided infective endocarditis complicated by congestive heart failure tend to be older, have more comorbidities, and more severe valve damage, leading to significantly higher 30-day and 1-year mortality rates. Early surgery is strongly associated with lower mortality but is only performed on approximately half of these patients.

Summary: In octogenarians with infective endocarditis, valvular surgery is less frequently indicated and performed, resulting in higher in-hospital and 1-year mortality rates. Age itself is not a predictor of mortality, but lack of surgical intervention when indicated strongly predicts poorer outcomes.

Summary: This retrospective multicenter cohort study aimed to identify the factors associated with dissemination of Nocardia spp. in patients with Nocardia-confirmed infections. The results showed that autoimmune diseases, lymphopenia, and N. farcinica infection were associated with a higher rate of dissemination. Although patients with disseminated nocardiosis received longer and more intensive treatment, their 12-month overall mortality was significantly higher than that of patients with localized nocardiosis.

Summary: This study aimed to describe the clinical characteristics, management, and residual symptoms (RS) in patients with definite and possible Lyme neuroborreliosis (LNB). A retrospective French multicenter cohort study was conducted, and 138 adult patients with positive intrathecal antibody index (AI) were included. The study found that definite LNB and duration of symptoms less than 3 months were protective factors against RS at last follow-up. Early diagnosis and treatment are important to improve outcomes and lower potential residual symptoms.

Summary: Using genomic data, the study determined the origin of MRSA ST398 isolates causing invasive infections in patients with no livestock contact. The isolates were sequenced and analyzed for the presence of virulence and resistance genes. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that MSSA isolates were human-associated, while MRSA isolates were livestock-associated. The results suggest that livestock-associated MRSA acquired virulence genes, enabling them to cause invasive infections in humans.
