Quantitative magnetization transfer imaging for non-contrast enhanced detection of myocardial fibrosis

Karina Lopez, Radhouene Neji, Aurelien Bustin, Imran Rashid, Reza Hajhosseiny, Shaihan J. Malik, Rui Pedro A. G. Teixeira, Reza Razavi, Claudia Prieto, Sebastien Roujol, Rene M. Botnar

Summary: A novel gadolinium-free model-based quantitative magnetization transfer (qMT) technique was developed to assess macromolecular changes associated with myocardial fibrosis. The proposed sequence was validated in both phantom and in vivo human thigh muscle, showing promising results for non-contrast enhanced assessment of myocardial fibrosis. This in vivo model-based qMT mapping of the heart demonstrated potential for clinical applications in evaluating myocardial fibrosis.

Myeloperoxidase is Independently Associated with Incident Heart Failure in Patients with Coronary Artery Disease and Kidney Disease

Scott E. Janus, Jamal Hajjari, Tarek Chami, Mohamad Karnib, Sadeer G. Al-Kindi, Imran Rashid

Summary: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is associated with high cardiovascular risk and mortality. Myelo-peroxidase (MPO) has been linked to adverse events in patients with mild-moderate CKD. This study found that in patients with mild to moderate CKD and CAD, MPO levels are independently associated with incident heart failure, all-cause mortality, and a composite outcome.

Magnetization Transfer BOOST Noncontrast Angiography Improves Pulmonary Vein Imaging in Adults With Congenital Heart Disease

Imran Rashid, Giulia Ginami, Giovanna Nordio, Anastasia Fotaki, Radhouene Neji, Harith Alam, Kuberan Pushparajah, Alessandra Frigiola, Israel Valverde, Rene M. Botnar, Claudia Prieto

Summary: Noncontrast enhanced magnetization transfer and inversion recovery prepared 3D free-breathing sequence (MTC-BOOST) has clinical utility in improving the imaging quality and contrast ratio of pulmonary veins and regions characterized by accelerated or turbulent blood flow in patients with congenital heart disease (CHD), with excellent agreement with standard T2prep-3DWH imaging.

An Exploration of Narcan as a Harm Reduction Strategy and User's Attitudes toward Law Enforcement Involvement in Overdose Cases

Jared Durieux, Andrew Curtis, Melissa Mirka, Eric Jefferis, Chaz Felix, Baaba Essel

Summary: This study explores the challenges faced by homeless individuals in Skid Row, Los Angeles, and how official actions can worsen these situations. The results suggest that despite protective legislation and resources, Narcan users still have concerns about being arrested and calling 9-1-1 during an overdose.

How Are We Handling Fluoroscopy-Guided Lumbar Puncture Requests? A Nationwide Survey of Practice Trends

T. J. Richards, J. C. Durieux, A. P. Nayate

Summary: This study investigated the management of referrals for fluoroscopy-guided lumbar punctures by neuroradiologists. The results showed that many doctors comply with requests from clinicians and patients for fluoroscopy-guided lumbar punctures, and also utilize physician extenders for the procedure.

Why, How Often, and What Happens When We Fail: A Retrospective Analysis of Failed Fluoroscopically Guided Lumbar Punctures

M. Gerasymchuk, J. C. Durieux, A. P. Nayate

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the success rates of initial and repeat fluoroscopically guided lumbar puncture (FGLP), reasons for failure, and the relationship between clinical indications and patients' decision to undergo a re-attempt. The study found that both initial and repeat FGLPs have high success rates, and there is no association between clinical indications and the likelihood of patients returning for a re-attempt.

Calcified myocardial scar seen via cardiac imaging correlating with ventricular tachycardia focus

Zachary Zuzek, Imran Rashid, Ivan Cakulev, Richard A. Josephson

Summary: A 74-year-old man presented with presyncope and non-sustained monomorphic ventricular tachycardia in the setting of acute coronary syndrome. A calcified myocardial scar was revealed on coronary angiogram, which was later identified as the ventricular tachycardia focus via electrophysiological study.

Summary: This study evaluated the impact of eliminating preprocedural planning CT on the technical aspects of CT-guided bone marrow biopsy. Patients without a planning CT received more fluoroscopic CT acquisitions but were exposed to significantly less radiation without an increase in procedure time.
